Crewe Alexandra v Tranmere Rovers Match Preview

All the News and Statistics ahead of Rovers visit to Crewe Alexandra on Saturday afternoon in Coca-Cola League One for Rovers’ final away game of the season. With their play-off chances gone, Rovers will be looking to just get two good results to end the season on a high note.

Time flies once the season begins but this Saturday marks Rovers’ final away game of the season as they travel one of the shortest distances to face Crewe at the Alexandra Stadium.

 

With Crewe in hot form in their last three matches and Rovers ever inconsistent, the game should have home win written all over it but with the added local (ish?) derby feel to the game anything can happen and probably will.

 

In the 1990’s, Tranmere had a decent run of results at Crewe including a 4-1 win which had seen Rovers go 4-0 up inside fourteen minutes before the hosts pulled back a second half consolation.

 

Last time the two sides met at the Alexandra Stadium in September 2002, it was also a game to remember or possibly a game to forget depending on how you want to look at it.

 

After losing goalkeeper John Achterberg in the warm-up, veteran Eric Nixon was named amongst the Rovers substitutes and when stand-in Keith Welch also limped off in the second half, the Rovers legend made his bow and kept a clean sheet in what still remains his last Rovers appearance for the first team.

 

Prior to Nixon’s appearance though, Rovers had fallen 2-0 behind thanks to a Rob Hulse goal and possibly the most bizarre own goal Rovers have ever and will ever score.  Fully thirty yards from his own goal on loan midfielder Tom Curtis headed past Welch to open the scoring at the wrong end.

 

Rovers will have to be wary of Alex’s top scorer Luke Varney who has netted 25 times for them this season and with the added spice of a notorious referee in the shape of Uriah Rennie it will surely be another entertaining day out in Cheshire so let’s get behind the lads and end the season a high.

Crewe are without David Vaughan (hernia), Tom Pope (shoulder), John Otsemobor (hamstring) and Michael Higdon (back).

 

Tranmere Rovers

 

Rovers have midfield pair John Mullin and Jason McAteer available again after both completed three match suspensions.

 

Goalkeeper John Achterberg is still out with a knee injury and is unlikely to return this season.
