Tranmere Youth 1 - 2 Huddersfield Youth

Tranmere Rovers' youth side got knocked out of the F.A. Youth Cup in the second round last night by Huddersfield Town.

Rovers, fielding a side of players who had all featured in reserve team football this season, were playing their first home game in the competition for a number of years and following on from a 1-0 victory over Grimsby in the first round, with a secdon round home tie against Birmingham City to play for.

The game was a close one and despite glimpses of individual pace and brilliance in the opening stages, niether team was able to get a shot in on target, with Ashton Taylor and Ryan Fraughan coming closest for Rovers.

Huddersfield however took the lead on 16-minutes with a brilliant strike from left-winger Daniel Broadbent, as the Town player brought the ball down on the left and cut inside before hitting a 25-yard shot into the top corner.

Tranmere however came back with a quick reply, as Josh MacAughley scored a wonderful team goal.  Tom Beahon was the creator, as the central midfielder played a perfectly weighted pass down the left wing for the Rovers striker who with his first touch accelerated past a defender, and looked to have taken the ball too far, before wrong footing the 'keeper by sliding the ball inside the left-hand post.

Shaun Garnett's Tranmere side looked to grab the game by the scruff of the neck now and had a number of chances to win it.  Ryan Fraughan somehow put one volley wide of the far post from Denson's cross before Terry Gornell sent a brilliant effort straight at the 'keeper on the turn and volley.

Just before half time, Gornell took the captains arm band as left-back Cresswell was replaced by Corrigan with an injury.

The second half started much like the first and chances were once again very limited, with the game being played mainly in midfield.

Huddersfield however won the game in the 72nd minute, as Broadbent got his second of the game, as he latched on to a threw ball into the penalty area, and with 'keeper McWeeney stuck to his goal-line, Broadbent shot across the 'keeper into the net, winning the game 2-1.

Tranmere did have chances to win the game, with one appeal for a penalty being turned down, whilst another shot was saved comfortably by the Huddersfield Town goalkeeper, who has represented England at school-boy level.
