The draw has been made this morning for the first round of the 2008/07 season’s Carling Cup and the result is that Tranmere will travel to Grimsby in a bid to reach the second round stage after losing in the first round of the competition last season.

Rovers Face Grimsby in Carling Cup Opener

This morning’s Carling Cup first round draw has handed Rovers a away tie against League Two side Grimsby Town at Blundell Park.

The tie will be played in the week commencing Monday 11th August and this time around Rovers will be looking to progress further than their first round offering last season when they were eliminated from the competition by then League Two side Stockport County at Edgeley Park.

The 1-0 defeat came thanks to a late goal from County’s Matty McNiel and ensured that Rovers, who didn’t deserve to win on the night, would see no repeat of their run to the final of this competition back in 2000.

Further details on the exact date of this tie and any important ticket information will follow soon right here on Total Tranmere.

they'll never do it this season, especially with the prospective financial problems we have at the moment

But if it helps us get to the third round then it is worth it. Add to that if we take more fans the gate will be higher and we get more money from that.

He's a better player than League Two and I'm surprised he's dropped down there. Good luck to him

Stockdale can't play CB, he'll carry on at RB.

Stockdale will play right back for us, we haven't had one for the last year. I remember him being a decent player a few years back and from what's said on here he's a great signing.

He's an excellent play can't believe hes dropped to L2.

Hardly missed a game in 2 seasons here, he's very reliable and consistent, got an excellent tackle to.

Experienced, his only weaknesses are his pace, or lack of it, and sometimes he isn't the best at supporting the winger in front of him (although we have Shuker who doesn't always need to much support!)

He's a good tackler but did drift out of position badly on a few occasions.

On the whole though sorry to see him go.

Seems a strange move for him but it is nearer his North East roots I suppose.

Slightly worrying though if the rumour is true that he wanted a 50% pay rise and has now got it at Grimsby?

If we can't compete on wages with Grimsby then we are in big trouble.

Having said that though it could just be that Ronnie wants to spend the larger wages elsewhere in the team which would be fair enough I suppose.
