Swindon Town v Tranmere Rovers - Match Preview

The season is here once more as Tranmere travel to Swindon to take on Maurice Malpas's team in a difficult season opener. Hit by a few injuries already, Ronnie Moore will still be hoping his team can get their first points on the board early ahead of the first home game next week.

TOTAL TRANMERE – Pre-Season Friendly Preview

Saturday 9th August 2008 - Kick-Off 3.00pm

Swindon  v Tranmere Rovers

Coca-Cola League One at County Ground

With the Euro 2008 Championships and almost a month of pre-season friendlies having already taken place, it seems hard to believe that fourteen weeks have passed since Tranmere lost 2-1 at Northampton on the final day of last season but now once again another football season is upon us and Rovers begin this season as they ended the last - on the road.

The County Ground in Swindon is our opening destination which holds some irony in the fact that it was at this same location last season that the wheels of Tranmere's promotion push seemingly began to fall off.

After the opening day defeat at home to Leeds, Rovers went on a ten game unbeaten run and to the top of League One but after firstly losing Steve Davies and then Chris Shuker for the Swindon Game itself, where they lost 1-0, things began to fall to pieces.

After a decent pre-season and with a new look 4-3-3 formation which has been successfully used in the pre-season campaign, Rovers will be confident of making a good start with a number  of the seven new signings likely to feature on Saturday.

Rovers' Boss Ronnie Moore seems to have put more emphasis on youth for this coming season and the squad certainly seems to have greater depth in terms of cover for all areas of the pitch but how they perform in the League as yet remains unknown.

Swindon Manager Maurice Malpas has signed former Leicester and Plymouth player Lilian Nalis on free transfer over the summer as well as Kevin Amankwaah from Swansea for an undisclosed fee.  Former Fulham Michael Timlin has also made the move to Wiltshire this summer on a free transfer.

Until the season gets underway, there can be no real way of telling who will be the Team to look out for in League One this season but having netted 17 goals and conceded just 5 in the six first-team pre-season games, confidence at least will be high going into this game.

If you're going to Swindon tomorrow, get behind the lads and enjoy the game and let's all hope for the perfect start.

Tranmere Team News

Tranmere have doubts over Danny Coyne and Chris Greenacre (both calf strains) whilst Gareth Edds (hamstring) is also a doubt.

Chris Shuker may well be fit for this game after missing most of pre-season through injury although his level of fitness may see him miss out on a start.
