Over the past couple of weeks, Tranmere fans have been voting for their Tranmere ‘Goal of the Year’ for 2008 and the winning goal which came from on-loan defender Ryan Shotton, will now go head-to-head to try and win the Mitre Goal of the Year Award towards the end of January.

As well as celebrating a return to Prenton Park last week for the remainder of the season, Ryan Shotton now has a second reason to celebrate after Rovers Fans voted his superb long-distance strike against Colchester United as their goal of the year for 2008.

Rovers fans were asked at the start of 2009 to vote for the best Tranmere goal in the 2008 calendar year as part of the Football League Awards for 2009.

The strike, which looked to have set Rovers on the road to a come-back against the U's will now go on to compete against the best goal from the other 71 Football League Clubs before a final five is selected as the nominations for the Mitre Goal of the Year 2008 Award category at the 2009 Football League Awards.

Shotton's Long Range Goal vs Colchester was Voted the Best!

Although Rovers went on to lose 4-3 in that game against Colchester the goal, which is also surely a top contender for ‘Goal of the Season' at Rovers' end of season awards in April, will be fondly remembered and beat off competition from Ian Moore who finished in second place for his strike in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at Scunthorpe in December.

Moore also finished third with his long range strike against Leeds United in Tranmere's 2-1 win earlier in the season at Prenton Park.

To vote for the winning goal once the final five have been determined, keep an eye on Sky Sport's Soccer AM show towards the end of January.  The winner will be confirmed at the Football League Awards ceremony at Grosvenor House in Park Lane in London on Sunday 29th March.
