League 1 Clubs Keep Busy in Window Merry-go-Round
By Deadly Submarine
January 23 2009
With the January transfer window drawing to a close, Deadly Submarine takes a detailed look at who has been busy in League One and who hasn’t as Clubs look to improve their squads as best they can ahead of the run in to the end of the season when the promotion and relegation issues will be decided.
At the time of writing there have been forty-nine transfers involving League One Clubs during January but in a reflection of current financial times, just four of those deals have been recorded as ‘undisclosed' meaning that they most likely involved some kind of fee. The rest have been made up of loan deals and the odd free transfer and what follows is a look at who the busiest teams have been in the transfer market and who has moved where in Coca-Cola League One. League One Teams who haven't been active in the transfer market so far in January are Brighton, Bristol Rovers, Southend Utd, Swindon and Walsall whilst Crewe, Millwall, Scunthorpe and of course Tranmere have had just one movement of a player. Tranmere Rovers of course brought in Stoke City defender Ryan Shotton on loan for the remainder of the season following his highly successful three month loan spell earlier in the season in which he scored five goals. Crewe Alexandra and Millwall have both lost one player each with Anthony Elding moving to Lincoln City on loan from Gresty Road and Ryan Smith departing the New Den on a free transfer to join struggling Championship side Southampton. Scunthorpe United meanwhile allowed Josh Lillis to join Notts County on loan. Hull City's Dean Windass has Joined Oldham Athletic on Loan The busiest Managers in the window so far have been struggling Cheltenham Town's Martin Allen and Nigel Pearson who is of course Manager of runaway leaders Leicester City. Cheltenham have brought in four players in January and got rid of one as they bid to try and remain in League One for another season. Scott Brown left Whaddon Road to join Port Vale on a free transfer allowing Drissa Diallo to join on a free transfer from MK Dons. Nicholas Bignall (Reading), Lewis Montrose (Wigan) and Chris Westwood (Peterborough) have also joined the ranks at Cheltenham on loan. Nigel Pearson's Leicester City have brought in Tom Cleverley (Man Utd) and Mark Davies (Wolves) on loan to boost their seemingly title-bound squad and in return have loaned out DJ Campbell and Nicky Adams to Blackpool and Rochdale respectively. Scott Garner joined Mansfield Town for an undisclosed fee to complete the changes at the Walkers Stadium. It's been two in and two out for John Sheridan's Oldham Athletic so far in January as Scott Golbourne of Reading and Dean Windass of Hull City both arrived on loan whilst former Rovers defender John Thompson joined Notts County after being released by the Latics and Chris O'Grady was loaned out to Bradford City. Rumours this week also suggest that Lee Hughes will be joining Doncaster for a fee thought to be around £225,000.
