Rovers Surge Into Play-Off Places With Win

Mark Ridgway reports on Tranmere's impressive result at home to Huddersfield this afternoon as they won 3-1 to move into the play-off palces at the expense of Oldham Athletic who lost heavily away from home at MK Dons.

Another crushing performance from Rovers moved them into the play-offs for the first time this season. Play off rivals Huddersfield had a decent start but faded away. Antony Kay bagged a brace and Bas Savage scored a wonder goal as Rovers claimed three points with three goals.
Unsurprisingly there were no changes to the side that stunned runaway leaders Leicester on Wednesday so the team looked as follows:

Rovers nearly took the lead in style early on as Danny Mayor's cross was chested down by Savage and Jennings hit a sweet left footed volley goalwards only for it to be kept out be an amazing save.
From the resulting corner though after just six minutes, Rovers took the lead. Charlie Barnett crossed for a totally unmarked Antony Kay who had the simple task of heading in from a few yards out at the near post for his tenth goal of the season.

On 23 minutes however Huddersfield equalised when Tom Clarke crossed for Andy Booth to perfectly head into the top corner from twelve yards.
An inswinging Andy Taylor corner was bundled over the line by Bas Savage only for it to be ruled out for a foul on the goalkeeper and Coyne then saved a 25 yard free kick as the game continued to be scrappy with nobody taking control.

Terry Gornell was forced off at half-time with a ligament problem and was replaced by Eddy Sonko who went up front with Bas Savage.
Rovers started well as Andy Taylor blazed over and Ben Chorley did well to break-up any Huddersfield momentum. Rovers were soon back in front though when Bas Savage receive the ball on the corner of the area, cut inside onto his right and released an unstoppable thunderbolt into the top corner.

Just three minutes later, Rovers were out of sight when an Andy Taylor free kick was only cleared as far as Antony Kay who volleyed in through the legs of the keeper for his 11th of the season.
On the hour mark Danny Mayor had to be replaced by Aaron Cresswell after the on loan striker picked up a hamstring injury, meaning Barnett moved to the right wing.
Ian Craney then shot just wide from range and Cresswell had an effort deflected over for a corner. Towards the end Rovers played the clock down in the corners, and saw the game out. Another key three points for Rovers.

Another good all round performance but Kay stood out today, two good goals and was involved in everything good today. Successfully broke up Huddersfield attacks and built many for Rovers.
