Goodison Stays at Prenton Park Until 2011

Rovers defender Ian Goodison has extended his Tranmere career by signing a new deal with the Club which will keep him at Prenton Park until the summer of 2011 and becomes the second player today to be tied down to a new deal on a busy day for the Club.

Just as Rovers Fans were digesting the news we reported earlier about young striker Josh Macauley signing a professional contract with the Club, Tranmere Rovers hit them with a second wave of news after long-serving defender Ian Goodison has agreed a two-year extension to his contract which will keep him at Prenton Park until June 2011.

After asking personally for a chance to impress Brian Little (his former Manager at Hull City) after Little had taken over at Prenton Park earlier that season, Goodison reportedly paid his own air fares from Jamaica to come back to England and impressed enough to earn a permanent deal in February 2004, making his debut away at Oldham Athletic.

He has since gone on to make over 230 appearances for the Club and has become a firm fans favourite.

Goodison Old

Still a Jamaican international and captain of their World Cup side, Ian has been named supporters' Player of the Season and North West League One Footballer of the Season in the last two seasons and this season he has helped Tranmere to the third best defensive home record in the division with just 18 goals conceded in 21 games.

The Club is currently 16 games unbeaten at home in League One which has taken them to just one point from the Play Off positions and some of that has to be down to the presence of Goodison alongside Ben Chorley.

Speaking to the Club's Official Website, Tranmere Manager Ronnie Moore said....

"It is great for the Club that Ian has agreed his new contract.  He has been our most consistent player over the last three seasons and has deserved the awards he has received."

"He is a leader on the pitch, a winner and a player who is prepared to go through the pain barrier for the Club.  He is a fantastic defender and I'm delighted he will be with us for another two seasons - hopefully in the Championship."

Ian himself added to his Manager's comments by saying...

"I'm happy to sign a new contract at Tranmere.  I've enjoyed my time here so far and look forward to the next two years."

The new contract is subject to his work permit being renewed but as he has been a regular player for Rovers again this season this surely won't be a problem.

Ian is available for selection for Tranmere's next home match against Hereford United on Easter Monday, 15 April, kick off 3.00pm.

I remain sceptical about this in some ways.

Probably worth keeping him on as he and Chorley have mostly done well together but he has looked uncertain at times this season and who knows how he will be in two years time?

I think a one year deal would have been better. Injuries have been frequent this season, as have mistakes, but he can still be a good player for us.

However, I don't think he'll be that good in the Championship for us next season.

Does the remark that he is available for the Hereford game imply that Ian is not available for Saturday at Walsall?

Rubbish news, he has been awful of late. Dani, your head is so far up his ar*e you more or less carry him around.

he's made mistake after mistake in the last two games i've seen him and Bristol was just a joke. His tackle in the corner of the pen area that should have resulted in a penalty summed up his game. Makes a mistake, gets away with it with sheer luck.

I'm also a little sceptical about this. One year deal fair enough but two year deal bearing in mind we could be a Championship team (albeit very unlikely sorry to be negative) but he would get skinned every week at that level. Being in the position we're in at the moment is a little bit of a gift and curse situation as we really don't know where we'll be next season, I think this puts some of the better players off signing new deals. With Goodison, I would imagine he was offered a one year deal, asked for less money but a 2 year deal and it was agreed. I wouldn't have thought he earns that much to be honest and for him, signing a new contract here is a better option than being a 35 yr old league 1 defender whilst we're in a recession without a club. For the likes of Chorley, Kay, Jenno, Barnett I can't see them being free agents at the end of the year being such a hinderance to them which is why we need to sign them up before the end of the season. Really this should have been taken care of at the start of the year. Fans always turn on players when they walk for free at the end of the year, fact of the matter is, unless we've tied them down, these lads could have already signed pre contract agreements with anyone in January and no matter what the contract we put to them now, it could already be too late. I hate that this happens every season its so frustrating. For all we know, Kay, Jennings, Barnett and Chorley could have already signed pre contract agreements elsewhere and we could lose them all. I think we need to keep 2 out of those 4 minumum as rebuilding the whole squad every season puts us at a disadvantage at the start of each year I feel.

A few of you are saying we should of only gave him a one year contract - but if we offered him that he would of left, remember Paul Hall situation? I bet you were all moaning at the club for it back then!

The decision with Paul Hall was proven to be correct, he was quite good still the first season but very poor the second. Hopefully Goodison will be ok, I think its difficult to find left sided (not footed) centre backs at any level so I guess in that respect tying down a tried and tested player at this level regardless of age is a good thing. I hope he remains as consistent as he has done over the last 3 seasons.

I agree with Stanj. A one year contract initially would have been the right decision for a player at that stage of his career.

Also, Paul Hall was in my opinion at the time, worthy of a two year contract if it meant keeping him - Goodison isn't I don't think.

His choice of car might also suggest he is earning quite a bit though lol.

i think you just have to look at our record with out ian in the team to realise the importance of this!
i don't agree that he'd get skinned every week should we go up either.. there are some excellent strikers in the championship granted, but i think alot of them are on the experienced side, the ones with pace are usually in the prem.. goodo has a good reading of the game an i think he'll step up winking smiley

i know he has his moments but he has done since we bought him yet we still vote for him in our droves for player of the season... and while i don't think he'll win it this season he will certainly come in top 4 i'd say for votes.

I said top four. There are many behind him in the list =p

Accompanying him has to be The News Of The World editor, Gary Barlow and Bono. There are also a few that are far too annoying to only be shot in the foot however. Lady Gaga manages to fall into that next catergary lol.

Great signing. With our cash flow who else can we bring in?. We can only afford very young players who have not played first team football yet in the last two seasons.Sub i expected that from you as you don't have a good word to say about him lol. But all in all i think two years might be long but some else would have taken him on a two year. As for him getting murdered in the championship Plymouth want to buy him in Jan 08 so why would they want him if they don't think he can play in Championship
