Tranmere Rovers have today announced their first signing of the summer, as midfielder Mark Allott joins the club from League One rivals Oldham Athletic.

Allott signs a two-year deal with the Wirral club and will join the club on July 1st after his contract with the Latics has expired.

The 31-year old central-midfielder, who is Tranmere's replacement for out-going captain Antony Kay, came through the youth ranks at Boundary Park where he made his debut as a 19-year old during the 1996/97 season.

Over the next six years, Allott went on to make 173 appearances for the club, scoring an impressive 31 goals, before moving out to Chesterfield, initially on loan during the 2001/02 season, before joining the club permanently at the end of his tempory stay at Saltergate.

Mark Allott Joins Rovers From Oldham on a Two Year Deal!

During his five years at Saltergate, Allott was a permanent fixture in the Chesterfield midfield, becoming a key player for the Spireites through the seasons.

He made over 240 appearances for the club, scoring 14 goals, form which convinced Oldham to re-sign the player for an undisclosed fee in July 2007, Allott joining the club on a two-year contract.

Under John Sherridan, Allott again featured regularly in the Oldham midfield as he made exactly 100 appearances over the next two years, scoring seven goals.

However, at the end of the 2008/09 season, he opted to leave Oldham, joining Tranmere on a contract that will keep him at the club until the end of the 2010/11 season.

Allott is Tranmere's first signing of the 2009 summer and many more are expected, especially if Rovers lose as many players as are rumoured to be looking for a move away from Prenton Park.

First decent signing of the summer for Ronnie, Kay out - Allott in. Player who can play defense, Defensive mid and Attacking mid, a bit like Kaysy, but we will no doubt have to wait and see if that is the case on the field next season.

Hopefully we will get confirmation of Chorley out - Hughes in if Ben is leaving us. Coyne will hopefully stay on, as will Moore & Jenno...
Now we just need a replacement for Barnett in case he goes, although Mahon being touted could be the guy to fill in somewhere.
I believe that Mahon's contract is up this summer is it not? Him and JMW could fill the voids in midfield from Edds and Barnett, so all in all, prospects for next year don't look too bad at the moment.

Heard that Budtz has left Hartlepool as well, no one else think that he's a decent keeper who could fill in for Achto?

I think Mahon is out of contract and surely with Burnley making the Premiership he will be surplus to requirements at Turf Moor?

As I've said before though will Mahon be worth the wages if he can't stay fit?

Budtz has always seemed decent enough!

alan mahon has been released today by burnley, he made 13 sub appearances for us during our promotion this season ( support burnley + trfc ) he spent a couple month on loan at blackpool but only made 1 appearance,

he has had a lot of injuries whilst at burnley, and just like danny coyne, we never saw the best of him,

sure alan mahon will be looking to sign for a championship club though, you never know, maybe ronnie will let him train with us like he did coyne and blackmail him ino signing a 2yr contract :-)

and just say this person is one of mahons best friends and works for the club !

On Mark Allott, i'll call this one a 'solid' signing. Not spectacular, but nothing to write home about. Would be an ideal replacement for Kaysy, but we need to sign some creativity and a striker with good finishing ability if were to even stay up next year.

what's wrong with the strikers we have?
Only Greeny has left, but he hardly played this season, Gornell has come better this year as has Curran, and they all chipped in towards us finishing 7th. It is one of the least of our worries at the moment. The key for us now is keeping Danny Coyne I think

Barry Roche is a quality keeper at Morecambe. He's huge about 24 I think.

whats wrong with the strikers?
the highest score was ian moore- with i 11, look at promotion teams - Liecester- Fryatt 27
Peterborough- mackail-smith 23
Scunny- Hooper 24
okay better service but had lambert on 29 or cox on 29 had that much better service? we need 20 goals a season man!

I agree McCready and as an opposing fan has said in a season review article for us (to be published shortly), we were often lacking in attack.

Its what we have been missing all season, somebody to gamble in the box and put away the chances that others miss.

somebody with experiance would be quality, that extra amount of gooals could be the extra push we need

We need someones goals to replace Kay's. I think Allott is probably a better midfielder than Kay, which isn't hard as his passing was woeful at time's, however we need to make those 11 goals up, whether it be a striker or a better winger.

I don't think keeping Kaysy would of kept those 11 goals - it's not something he'll achieve again!

well he got 7 the year before and he only really got playing about 5/6 games into the season and even then he was playing centre back and right back till atleast march so he did very well considering

I think this is a great signing!

Although he may not score as many goals as kay did last year (not many midfielders do) he will bring more to the team. You just have to look at his record and see that he has been voted player of the season in 3 of the last 4 years!

Great signing ronnie, more of the same please!

hopefully next yr are team could be sutin like this
coyne
shooton goodison chorley taylor
JMW savage allot mahon
moore Clarke( from ipswich ?)

with Savage being robbie as romours are suggesting and that with barnett n jenno gone

jennison isnt the best tachnical player but has pace that we looked better with wen we had him? free

Clarke from ipswich would he come cant see his wage demands being too high, ronnie spoke about him on BLW on sky, just left ipswich ! free and a poss 20 goal a season man?

We need to try and tie coyne and chorley done soon as or replace them

Ok, Clark can be 19 goals a season.. (We have just ofloaded Greenacre, O'Callghan left in March?! so we've saved his wages too.)

Will need to release a striker to sign one I think.

We have savage, curran, moore, gornell, mcauley - plus shuker can play behind the striker as well

There's no way a club with our finances would want any more than that in one position numbers-wise, would be crazy. Maybe if Moore went, we could look at it.

As much as I think we should keep Moore I think you're right Mike.

Out of those though I don't know who I would get rid of!

Re: Rovers Sign Allott

curran if he had a injury 3 season would get you about 15/20 goals a season savage get you about 10 goals and the moon walk dance gornel get a few moore get you about 11 if we go wid 433 you could get a strick partnership of about 35 if it went to plan then other players chiping in we could hve a good strick force we wouldnt heed any1 else

4-3-3 didnt work we proved that last season.

I would let curran go tbh as much as he works hard and i like the guy i jsut don't think he has the ability

I would probably agree with Dani - Curran is great for his effort, bags of pace and enery, but he's missing something from his game, there's just something that he hasn't got, I don't think he'd get 15-20 a season. (Hopefully I'll be proved wrong!)

Also agree about 4-3-3.. it'd be suicidal as proved last year.

From the strikers named above, Curran, Gornell and Macauley probably aren't even on more than 1k a week between them. They're all from our youth system and haven't much first team experience really, especially as Curran, has spent so much time injured this year.

If pushed for one it has to be Savage for me but like I said above it would be difficult to decide.

Moore won't get 20 goals next season Mikey - guaranteedwinking smiley

curran shouldnt be let go IMo he has the ability to play on the last man n he will get goals, though at this moment he isnt ready due to the injury, maybe a loan deal will help him as it helped gornel , who aslo may need to go out on loan, as we need an new striker, with savage, moore and macauley, four squad srikers with shuker a fifth option as is ash taylor as a last resort, and two out on loan when injuries and suspenion catch up to us.

Best case they bang them in on loan and we can call them back, worse case we find out weather to let them go or not !

I fear if we let him go it will work out like dagnall and he will turn good

The differance between dagnell and curran is that dagnell has abaility wheres i dont think curran does tbh he looks lost with the ball at his feet. Gornell on the other hand is a superb player and will be a first team regular.
