Moore of the Same as Ian's Goals Sink Heswall

Ian Moore scores twice as a mixed Rovers team of first team and youth players as well as a trialist, earn a relatively straightforward 2-0 win away at Heswall FC on Tuesday night to counter the disappointment of the other half of the squad losing 3-2 at Cammell Laird at the same time.

Whilst Rovers were losing 3-2 down at Cammell Laird under the watchful eye of Manager John Barnes, the other half of Rovers' professionals and some of the Club's youngsters performed well under the stewardship of Barnes's assistant Jason McAteer and came out 2-0 winners thanks to a brace from Ian Moore.
New summer signings Alan Mahon and John Welsh joined Moore and Chris Shuker at Heswall whilst there was also a trialist by the name of Chris Riley who has previously played for Tottenham Hotspur. The rest of the starting eleven was made up of youth team players, some of whom had featured in the opening pre-season friendly at Holyhead Hotspur last Friday night. Ian Moore was the main man in terms of goals, scoring a header after half an hour from a superb cross by Alan Mahon after some excellent build up play and then adding a second goal in the second half after a move beginning in the midfield and helped by a mistake from the Heswall goalkeeper.
Young players Ashton Taylor at the back and substitute striker Dale Jennings who starred in the 2-2 draw for the Youth Team at Holyhead last Friday, were impressive as were Alan Mahon, John Welsh and of course Ian Moore for Rovers.
Rovers next game at home to Preston North End of the Championship on Saturday afternoon (kick-off 3.00pm) should give fans more of an idea as the squads that were split tonight come together for a much tougher test.

Sounded like a decent game though!
On the plus side, John Welsh put himself about a bit and looks like he could be the midfield "enforcer" we need. Joe Collister had a good game between the sticks, and the two young lads down the left, Pursehouse & Mackreth linked up very well. Alan Mahon put in a superb cross from the left for Ian Moore's opener and worked hard throughout. Mahon does appear to have a picture in the attic though, as he looked exactly the same as he did when he left here ten years ago. All in all, a good effort and an easy win

Collister didnt have a lot to do as the back four played well, Ash Taylor looked compsed in the air and with the ball at his feet, not sure what happened with Tom Baker as he was replaced prior to Kick off with a first year youth. Welsh looked good sitting in front of the back four, Mahon was the playmaker. Shuker and McCauly did nt show much , although Shuker did play some good through balls in the first half to Moore and Mackreth. The link up play down the left was exelent with the first goal coming from a run from Mackreth and a cross ball from Mahon for Moore to head home. Riley did look out of it for most of the game although he did break forward in the second half as Heswall pushed on and became tried. Pursehouse and Mackreth gave Tranmere options on the left particulary in the first half, mackreths speed and ability to carry the ball from defence to attack looked promising. Jennings came on in the last 15 for Mackreth and again linked well with Pursehouse, given that Tranmere had two pros on the right most of the action came down the left.
MON for me Ash Taylor, would like to see him line up with Goodison on Sat agains Preston.
Someone mentioned the other day on here that the photo on the club website of the squad out for their first run had Chris Rimmer just behing McAteer, and that was definitely the same chap who was playing at centre-half on Tuesday
Despite my praise of Rimmer from last Friday's game, it seems that not even some of the youth players agreed with me that he had a good game at Holyhead lol!
