Tranmere have today signed central defender Gavin Gunning on loan for a month from Premier League side Blackburn Rovers to boost numbers, particularly at the back, ahead of the first game of the 2009/10 season on Saturday away at Yeovil Town.

The 18-year old hails from the Republic of Ireland and has so far represented his country at every level up to Under 19 whilst progressing through the youth academy at Ewood Park.  Gunning recently signed a new three year deal at Blackburn keeping at the Club until 2012 and has featured in Blackburn's first team friendlies during this pre-season campaign.

With both Ian Goodison and Gareth Edds suspended for Saturday's season opener away at Yeovil, Manager John Barnes acted to boost the defence and snapped up Gunning for at least a month initially.

Speaking of his latest addition to the squad, John Barnes said.....

"I'm delighted to be able to bring Gavin to Tranmere on loan.  He is another young, talented defender who will improve our squad.  I'd like to thank Blackburn Rovers manager Sam Allardyce for allowing Gavin to join us on loan."

Official site saying we've signed Blackburn Rovers' Irish U19 centre half Gavin Gunning. Hasn't played for Blackburn yet but was a reserves regular last campaign and has featured in the first team's pre-season outings. Signed for a month.

I would of hoped for it being longer than a month loan, due to our lack of defenders, but oh well. Still a good signing IMO

Great news, as long as the defence play as a unit then I am hopeful of a win on Saturday, can't believe Fat Sam has helped us out, guess it was just Aldo he couldn't stand! Fair play to Fat Sam, gone up in my esteem.

I was hoping for someone with a bit more experience to be honest. Also when has Fat Sam ever done us a favour, there must be a catch in there somewhere!!!!

Anyway, good luck to the lad, lets hope the new defence bond very quickly!

C'mon rovers!!!!!

(still think we will loose though sad smiley )

Will this be the youngest and most inexperienced defence that Rovers have ever started with?.With so many youngsters a more experienced head may have been better. As the Carling Cup so often shows experienced Div 1 sides can beat many young premier reserve sides. But it is certainly better than trying to cover a central defensive position from what is available from our squad

Barnes has said he is hopefull of signing another defender tomorrow so this maybe a player who has a bit more experience if it comes off.

At least the numbers are now starting to rise with goodison & edds back on tuesday and barnett shouldnt be too far away, lets hope these youngsters can show their mettle.

Bizarre signing. Why for only one month? We'll just find ourselves in the same position in four weeks

I suppose it covers for the shortage on Saturday at least which is what a lot of people were concerned about yesterday!

Yes but we can't just keep bringing in players for a month. Remember that after the window closes we can't sign anybody for the season

If needed the loan can always be extended.

Have the loan rules been changed this season as in previous seasons what was called emergency loans could be made after the transfer window had shut.

It can only be extended by two months though, one month at a time.

Seems mad when when we let 2 good young centre halves go last season.

Yeah, you can sign players on loan, but not on a season long loan, as I said
