Tranmere Rovers have today completed the deadline day signing of defender Marlon Broomes on a free-transfer after recently playing for the Club in the Carling Cup on a non-contract basis as well as training with John Barnes and the Rovers squad.
Tranmere manager John Barnes has today completed the signing of defender Marlon Broomes on a one-year contract, with the unattached defender signing on a free transfer after being released by Blackpool in the summer.
Broomes joined Tranmere in August on a non-contract basis, and, having been handed the number eight shirt, made his debut in Rovers' 4-0 victory over Grimsby in the Carling Cup first round, Tranmere's only clean sheet this season.
However, with the 31-year old on a pay as you play contract, and deemed not match fit by manager John Barnes, he has not featured in the first team again, playing only reserve team football for the Prenton Park side.
A former England U-21 international, Broomes started his career with Blackburn Rovers, where he made over thirty appearances before moving on to play in Coca-Cola League's One, Two and the Championship with the likes of Stoke, Sheffield Wednesday, Blackpool and Preston, where he was most successful, as well as spending time on loan with Queens Park Rangers.
In his career, the six foot centre-half has made well over 200 appearances in club football, scoring seven goals in the process.
A tall, strong defender, Broomes brings with him plenty of experience which will without doubt help defenders Ash Taylor, Shay Logan and Aaron Cresswell.
Strong in the air and quick along the ground, Broomes should go straight into Tranmere's match day squad to face Carlisle United on Saturday.

Is it really the signing we need.He has not made an impact at any club that he has been with and this continues the inexplicable trend of signing players who hardly played last year.The fact that he does not have a club shows that no other team rated him.The one thing it shows again is that the clubs approach seems to be that if it is cheap enough it is good enough.
He's been at Tranmere for a month, he's played for us and did well, albeit against Grimsby, he was capped as an U21 for England so he obviously has some ability etc, Bas Savage had hardly set the world alight before he joined us, but he was brilliant last season.
He's got plenty of Championship experience behind him, former Premier League player too with Blackburn, and played 19 games for Crewe in our division on loan last season.
So he did play last year, it's not as if he comes to us with a year of no football behind him.
He will do as well as he did at Crewe which was not good enough.The Crewe defence last year was appalling and there was no wish by Crewe to retain him.Not good enough for ateam relegated but good enough for one that looks like being relegated?
Interesting time for that signing to come with possible rumours of managerial changes this week lol.
However as we saw with Ronnie Moore, signing a player isn't a guarantee of keeping your job it would appear.
Hopefully Broomes can get fit soon and give us more options at the back, possibly allowing Ash Taylor to have a go in midfield where we are clearly lacking effort at the moment.
