Barnes and McAteer Depart Prenton Park
By Deadly Submarine
October 9 2009
Tranmere have today sacked Manager John Barnes and his assistant Jason McAteer with immediate effect after the Board decided they were unhappy with the situation at Prenton Park with Physio Les Parry and Reserve team Manager taking temporary charge for Monday’s home game against Stockport County….. ….

After a slow start to the 2009/10 season in results terms, the Board of Tranmere Rovers have today sacked Manager John Barnes and his assistant Manager Jason McAteer with immediate effect after a poor run of results in the first two months of the season which has seen Rovers slump to second from bottom of League One behind only Southampton who began the season on minus points.
Rovers have won just two of their League matches this season and although they progressed impressively to the second round of the Carling Cup before unlucky losing to Premier League side Bolton Wanderers, they also exited the Johnstone's Paint Trophy in midweek to League Two side Bury leaving the Board with the decision to dispense of their services.

The timing of the decision is somewhat unfortunate with one potential replacement in former midfielder Jimmy Harvey having just last week taken up the Manager's position at Chester City after they sacked Mick Wadsworth.
Total Tranmere will bring you further news on the departure of the Management team as well as reaction from the Board and Rovers fans later on today so stay tuned....

Sky Sports News were reporting that Barnes tried leaving the ground on a bicycle. Trust him to take "On your bike" literally!

For all of those who wished it, you got your way, but super Les in charge, you are having a laugh
Tell me about it! we must be the laughing stock of the football world right now!
Les Parry haha top banter that! I think I might put £500 on Stockport on monday (jokes)
Is PJ some sort of deluded fool? I felt John deserved till xmas at the very least! but then again payers may have been at his door etc...
Shame nice guy wish him all the best

Everyone going mad now barnes an mcateer gone because shaun an les are in the hot seat YOU CANT WIN WITH FICKLE SUPPORTERS. Who else would you of put in charge whilst the search went on for new manager i think shaun would make a good manager.
I think the jibe is at Les being number 1 (temp) he is a physio mate not a manager! It won't look good, imagine the headline on sky sports!
Tranmere appoint Physio to first team manager!!! not for me thanks

Barnes can now sit back and watch interestedly .
Geeze, is a physio in charge a first ?
Barnes gone is a good thing in it's way, as those who come after will have to produce the goods, and perhaps we can get to the real problem, lack of funds.
YOu know, I'm sufficiently suspicious as to believe that the Stckport game has brought this about, as more people will turn out for that now , where it was going to be bleak as things were.
Plus he's renowned for being a bit of a joker and will be respected by the players and could help lift a little bit of morale in the dressing room. He is clearly there to assist Shaun in his capacity as caretaker manager in the short term. Good luck to them both regardless of the long term plans at the club!
about time to.its the only decent thing johnson has done all season now maybe the players will start playin football. playoffs any one!

Said physio is Nigel Adkins and look what he's done with them since.
There would be an section of our "supporters" who would moan if we appointed someone like Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho, Arsene Wenger or Fabio Capello - without the need of paying them - because they aren't Ronnie or Aldo.
Ha ha it's Cool Spot 9anyone remember him from the old 7-Up ads/Sega Mega Drive game?)
[en.wikipedia.org]
Seeing him and hearing Barnes and McAteer had been sacked has made my day!!!
Bring on Steve Coppell!!!!

That being the case, if they failed to achieve certain criteria, i.e a minimum number of points after a set number of matches, etc, they could be sacked at no cost to the club
long shot, but it would be a good idea for future appointments...
They got what they've wanted to happen to weeks and now are moaning about someone who is only going to be in charge for probably two games at most (if that). I wish people would get a grip.
Good luck to Les and Shaun on Monday and all the best to Barnes and McAteer.

Funny how all the JB fans were saying we should back and support him before and now are saying the opposite now!!!
LES PARRY'S BARMY ARMY!!!!!!!!!!
We are very fortunate that Peter Johnson continues to stand by the Rovers. Not only does the club owe him £2 million, but I understand this loan has been and still is interest free. We need to remember that!
Could be wrong!
Good Luck for Monday Les!!
Anyway my view - I'm glad they've gone. There the past - now to the future. I don't see why all the negativity is around Les? He's been here for ages, watched several top class managers etc. Just because he's a physio it doesn't mean he has no managment abilities!
Nigel Adkins has done such a bad job at Scunny ain't he.

Before I start I want to make it clear I don't think Barnes has not proved successful. However this is a rookey manager with only 20 games previous experience and needed some time and patience before being judged. He showed at PP that he could play attractive football and was strong in the face of fan pressure and motivate players to unturn their performances when under fan pressure. He did not succeed in understanding how to manage the defence effectively nor grind out results against the better teams.
However saying all that his sacking discusted me as this was the fans doing, they never wanted Barnes in the first place and made his life a misery from day 1.
PJ wanted Barnes and was interested in experimenting with a different kind of manager.
However in the face of such huge fan pressure, PJ had to sack Barnes as the discontent was too much.
I genuinely believe fans showed no humility in the way Barnes was treated and like vultures they took glee in destroying another person.
I admit Barnes was not successful, but he needed more time and in my humble opinion I saw signs of good football and signs of improving results and felt that if he would rectify his obvious shortcomings he would become a better manager.
I am totally despondent with the game of football where players get away with murder and fans keep to their wretched opinions when they are so obviously acting with malice. I am so @#$%& off I am sending my season ticket to PJ tomorrow.
For me supporting a local club is about supporting something that reflects you and your values. Tranmere has for me lost it's charm as reflects none of the values I hold dear i.e. loyalty, respect, hard-work and fun. I personally feel I will just watch Liverpool FC where at least I will see great football and great players and forget all the values stuff as that is really what is in the past.
in the first place,i admit i did not want Barnes here to be honest and have not seen anything to change my mind,If you do send your season ticket to PJ and i really hope you change your mind as i nearly did when ronnie was sacked i think it should be noted it was the sacking of ronnie and not jb that started all the trouble from pre season.
Lets all get behind Les and Shaun on Monday.
For the long-term I hope that Shaun and Ray Mathias get a shot (Ray - forget the past and answer the call) and lets get back to the Kingy attitude. WE ARE TRANMERE ROVERS and we'll take anyone on - thats the way forward!!
We all know that we will never win the Premiership but, by christ, we'll give ANYONE a tough game.
What we need to do now is persuade PJ (?? that does'nt sit easy with a Grange Mount prodigy) to give us some leeway and we'll soar once again.
Rovers 'til I die
I feel sorry for JB but glad he has gone. The temporary appointments are insignificant in the long term and do not open us up to ridicule. My worry is that the decisions PJ has made since his return have been awful and costly ( to the club not him) and I just hope that he makes abetter decision this time.He will also need to recognise that the chain of mistakes has resulted in adire squad and that to avoid the financial cost of relegation that he makes additional funs available to an incomer.

Nooooooooooo

He done the exact same thing at Celtic. He plays the race card because he cant accept his own failings. Once again well done Tranmere now I hope you get behind your team in numbers.
Lets hear there is only one Les parry from the Kop regardless of the result because he is a servant to tranmere.
Will he change shorts to long trousers!!!!!!!
By the way if any players are reading this which i am sure you do lets get up a gear and get the season going YOU have also got your wish so lets play football
hello pedro267 you seem to have a major problem with the whole midfield ok will give you welsh cant pass a ball and suker has lost a yard of pace and is scared to challange but mcclaren looks a decent midfielder but if your other midfielders are poor you cant do everything and as for barnett how you judge him as so poor only seeing him in a couple of reserve games and 15 mins against bolton and the bury game is mad i have seen most of these games and and he looks decent he has pace does not give the ball away can pass short and long scores goals and gets stuck in so that makes him better than walsh and suker straight away would like to see carole barnett mcclaren and mahon in midfield on monday and see if that worksQuote:seanbhoy08

To which we respond by asking him how he got the job if it is a race thing.

I'm free to do what I want. I don't have to be what you want me to be.
I don't wish to sound funny, but if you don't like Tranmere, its fans etc then why post on a Tranmere website?
The other day you said you were off to Anfield, so what you waiting for? If you intend sticking around either get behind the club or make constructive arguements.
Quote:EricC1
To which he responds because there was nobody else daft enough to take a job with no money to spend, lousy supporters and having to live in the North West. It was racism to offer Barnes the job.
He was Johnson's first choice from the outset.
After a good nights sleep I decided I was going to continue supporting the club.
However I still feel there has been an injustice.
Many supporters felt when Moore was sacked there was an injustice and continued to go on about this 5 months after his departure.
If I cannot make my feelings known for a few days after Barnes sacking then the site has no purpose.
I really like this site and will continue to voice my opinion.
Eric
I'm free to do what I want. I don't have to be what you want me to be.
That said i feel ronnie's sacking was a lot more of an injustice!!!
Also regardless of opinions things like saying your going to support lfc etc... is lunacy you are either a TRFC fan or LFC pick what you want but stick by them and support them till the death.
If a good friend continues to insult you, you will question your friendship with that person.
I was feeling really dispondent about the club, the players and the fans that disrespcted Barnes from day 1. In addition I thought the appointment was really interesting and wanted to give him a chance.
In short staying supporting a club you feel dosen't represent you is not a sign of disloyalty it is a sign that the club does not represent the things you supported it for in the first place.
I am still not convinced that I am in tune with the club anymore, but I will continue to support as it is what I want to do at the moment.
Eric
I'm free to do what I want. I don't have to be what you want me to be.
Liverpool don't represent me. However I enjoy watching their football.
Do Tranmere represent you? If so, why?
Eric
I'm free to do what I want. I don't have to be what you want me to be.
1. Driving out managers that could be successful before they have had a chance
2. Screaming obsenities at other human beings and treating them like animals
3. Foolishly supporting players who are rebelling against a management team that just wants to get results
4. Harping about the good old days, when the football was boiring and the future mediocre
If that is what a true fan is.....indeed you are!!!!
