Wasteful Rovers Face Replay at Aldershot

Mark Ridgway reports on this afternoon's 0-0 home draw against a poor Aldershot side in the second round of the FA Cup which ensured that both teams will meet again in ten days time for a place in Round 3......

Tranmere  Rovers 0 - 0 Aldershot

Attendance: 3,742

Rovers dominated their second round FA Cup tie at home to Aldershot, but not for the first time this season failed to turn possession into goals and now face a replay away in ten days time.

The team was unchanged to the side that beat Southend United in midweek meaning the starting eleven looked like this:

Daniels

Logan, Broomes, Goodison, Bakayogo

Edds, Taylor, Welsh

Curran, Gornell, Shuker

Rovers started the better side and Gornell had a shot deflected wide after three minutes and then headed wide a Shuker cross soon after.

Scott Donnelly shot wide for Aldershot who were backed with a healthy following from down south. 

Rovers looked to have taken the lead soon after Donnelly's chance when John Welsh set his sights on goal and hit a power driver goalwards, only for it to hit the inside of the post, bounce onto the other post and eventually get cleared from the goal line.

It was turning into a decent game when Jackson headed at Daniels and Taylor tested the Shots keeper soon after.  Morgan then had an effort tipped behind by Daniels for the visitors.

John Welsh's cushioned pass fell nicely for Edds whose effort was blocked by some brave defending before Welsh lobbed over and soon after Chris Shuker had to be replaced by Thomas-Moore, Shuker was struggling after twisting awkwardly earlier in the game.

Curran had the first effort of the second half, hitting into the side netting on 53 minutes before Thomas-Moore and Edds both had shots go over as Rovers pressed for the opener.

Taylor placed a shot just over from the edge of the box before Gornell and Curran both had efforts comfortably saved by Jaimez-Ruiz.

Rovers had to be cautious of Aldershot's pace on the break however and their tricky left winger was proving dangerous with his pace down the wing.

Michael Ricketts then replaced Terry Gornell up front as Gareth Edds then shot over.  Ricketts set up Edds at the back post, but he was too slow to react and the Aldershot defence did well to clear as niether team ultimately looked like scoring as the final score was a dull one.

A player that has blown hot and cold this season, but was rock solid at the back today. In the second half Aldershot came into the game and regularly strung quick counter attacks and Broomes was always perfectly placed to deal with everything thrown at him.
