Les Parry is Tranmere's Man
By Matthew Jones
December 16 2009
Tranmere chairman Peter Johnson has today announced that caretaker manager and former club physio Les Parry has been appointed Tranmere manager on a full-time basis
Tranmere Rovers have today announced that former physio and club icon Les Parry will remain as the manager of Tranmere until the end of the season, with Shaun Garnett and Wayne Allison set to stay as Parry's coaching team.
Parry took over as Tranmere's caretaker manager nearly nine weeks ago, after the John Barnes experiment was finally ended by Peter Johnson's swinging axe.
Since Parry became Rovers boss, he has guided them to the F.A. Cup third round where they will host Premier League Wolves, and before Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Southampton, Rovers were on a run of five games without defeat, their best run of the season to date.
In total, since taking over, Parry has led Tranmere to five wins, three draws and six defeats, a vast improvement on the record the side had whilst John Barnes was in charge, and though Tranmere still lie in the League One relegation zone, recent signs have been that the club are beginning to stir, having not only been on that five game unbeaten run, but also kept four clean sheets in six games, despite having the worst defence in the league when Parry took over.

With all this in mind, it may not be too long before Rovers are climbing the table, with a busy and important Christmas period set to kick-off this weekend against Bristol Rovers at Prenton Park.
With Parry set to stay until the end of the season, Tranmere Rovers will now look to appoint a new club physio, whilst the Rovers legend remains in the managerial hot seat, although Parry will continue in both roles until a new man is appointed.
Speaking today, Tranmere chairman Peter Johnson told the Official club website "Les stepped into the breach, immediately stabilised the situation and there has been a significant improvement in the team's performances.
"Not only did we go five matches unbeaten, but we also picked up four clean sheets in the space of six games.
"He has embraced the role with the level of dedication that has been typical of his work throughout his career at Tranmere Rovers.
"Les, along with Shaun Garnett and Wayne Allison, has the firm respect of the players and staff at Tranmere and I firmly believe he is capable of guiding us away from the bottom of the division.
"I wish all three success in their roles."
Les Parry is yet to comment on being appointed Rovers manager on a full-time basis.
Total Tranmere would like to wish him all the best as he puts his best efforts towards saving Tranmere from the drop for the remainder of the season.

Good luck!
Firstly, I am in support of Les, but A) Did we ever have any intentions of appointing anyone else? Stories would suggest not the way many seemed to of applied and heard nothing, and
Why the hell did it take 9 weeks, C ) Where has the communication been?
Finally, he has to allow Les to bring 2 or 3 players in in January!
Still think we'll stay up, can't wait for this shocker of a season to finish.

People have said that Les may well keep us up even when I disagreed so I don't see the problem with this temporary appointment.
Thanks for the story Matt!

i spend my hard earned money on a season ticket. we get an ex england legend who has a vision of how the game should be played, he goes after 11 games and the physio gets job,
publicity stunt at first, not funny anymore, we are well and truly in the mire, so lets give it the physio, we are going down,
ok he has had some good results, caretakers usually do,
peter johnson has made an absolute mockery of this club,
i am not happy with this appointment, but no doubt i will get shot down by others, i hope we stay up but i cant see it.
The club is embarrasing. Just because PJ doesn't want to invest in the club, does not mean he has to run it as if it is a piece of ****. If he wants to sell the club it has to be sellable - in todays world, a sellable club is not one going backwards, nor is it a League One club for £6 million. He is truly deluded if he think's he'll sell the club in it's current state.

Jimmy Harvey would of loved the job and he'd be willing to come here if he went to Chester! Why didn't we offer it to him...
If it wasn't for his ludircous judgement over the summer we would never be in this position anyway.
If you didn't know PJ's background and were judging him on what he has done with Tranmere you would never guess he runs a successful business. He seems to have no clue about communication or anything.

The team has turned a corner - just observe team ethos and effort last few games - and we don't know how much better the atmosphere is off the pitch and in training, but I can imagine.
Johnson has given Les 9 weeks to show what he and his coaching team could do. Any shorter would not have given him a real view.
Now he has given Les the clout to sort, within a budget same as any appointment, a few players in January. Good timing.
It will not be an easy Christmas period but I'm far more optimistic now that we can escape the drop, and I'll be there fully supporting both Les and Peter Johnson starting Saturday - a tough game which I now feel we can win.... a month or so back I'd have gritted my teeth and expected a battering.
We lose carole in jan so bit of money freed up there.
I agree with PCandChris's post above.
Problem we have is we are left with players that barnes put his faith in (rickets, mcclaren, Mahon) who are not up to the job. Are they all on long term deals. Loved Mahon first time round but it was desparation and lack of understanding of the third division that made barnes sign him. As expected he has made no impact then got injured. Don't blame barnes for taking the job (he is an England legend, not a div 3 manager!) I blame pj for giving it to him
I'm happy with the appointment, I'd sooner PJ gave it to Les, Cheif and Garno than panic and give it to another big name who could come in and may not improve things. I'm not bigging PJ up, however, as it was his bad decision to sack Ronnie in the summer which has led to the mess we're currently in. I think there's no other 3 people who the team would give as much effort for as those that are in charge so, hopefully this appointment will steady the ship and give the players that stability that they know who's in charge. I bet they've been having their own rumour mill in training and the dressing room so here's for some stability.
I urge everyone to get behind Les, Garno and Chief and of course the players starting this Saturday. It's a massive game and the crowd can play their part.
Just on the note of managers, today has been quite eventful with Brendan Rogers being sacked by Reading, Magilton and Gorman leaving QPR and Steve Cotterill apparantly turning down the chance to return to Cheltenham, as has John Ward.
As we are all aware of the clubs financial situation, it is unfair of us to expect PJ to continue investing in the club.
After 9 weeks it is clear he tried to appoint an experienced manager but no-one was up for the challenge of getting an unbalanced team out of the relegation zone without any money to spend (as a side issue this should probably worry us, but that is not for today).
Therefore PJ had to choose between giving the role to a desperate unemployed/recently discredited manager or Les.
My view is that criticising the appointment shows either an unrealistic expectation of who would want the job or a lack of appreciation of what Les has achieved in only 9 weeks.
I massively support the appointment of Les and love the belief he has generated that we have the ability to escape relegation.
I'm also delighted for Les, who loves the club, is a great man and will be proud as punch to have advanced his career.
Here's my theory as to why he's got it until the end of the season...
The man (unless it's Hope Powell) PJ wanted is under contract until the end of the season and didn't want to pay the compensation. Then, when the contract is over the person in question can walk away and join us without any threat of breach of contract.
The way the club is being ran is a joke though (not 'cause "the physio is manager" - disagree with that arguement")

Likely he is going to link up with ince again at MK dons.
In a successful M.T any organisation looks for the following, amongst others;
- stability
- communication
- knowledge of the industry
- motivational and man management skills
- interrelationship with the market and it's customers
- enthusiasm
- Professionalism
Between LP, SG and The Chief the management team hit every single one of those attributes on the head. I'm not going to waste my time giving examples, they are as clear as crystal.
Appointing a new manager and new team now would mean another 7 or 8 games to get another rhythm going by which point the club could be well adrift with 10 - 12 games remaining. At that point relegation would be certain.
PJ doesn't need to prove his management skills to anyone, his business is successful and it is one of few businesses in the North West still generating an annual gross profit, albeit not a net profit. The fact is, the business world and the football world are different. Look at Russo at Watford, the chimps at Notts County, Bradford, Barnsley, Plymouth, Risdale and co at Leeds....the list is almost endless.
Personally, I see no logic behind the few that question the current management teams appointment. With the resources they have, the time and the circumstances as well as the macroeconomic climate in the UK at the moment, few could have done anything different.
Whether you are for or against the management team, they can only try to organise and motivate a team of individuals...it is up to those individuals to rise to the occasion and perform the most, so let's get behind the boys and the new management team...Super White Army!

Sorry if this offends, but if you don't wanna support the club or the current management team, you know where the exits are!!!
Is the cheif being paid?

So is it viable to pay 3 people 4 if u count a new physio to do one man's job?
Ur thoughts

We are only paying two extra people as well, as Les and Garno were already being paid by us!

Can't see Garnett being on much, nor can i see Chief being on too much, and with us already paying Les and having not paid Chief or another physio for the last 10 weeks we must of saved enough to make it possible. Can't see the new physio being on much too, so I'd say they're probably a cheaper team than the other options that were available.

He would have earned £35k tops as physio and I wouldn't have though Les would have negotiated hard for a huge increase in salary.
The average managerial wage in our league is £100k.

Interesting what you say though that Barnes was earning £4k per month, I am very suprised it's that little.
Anyway I feel like a nosy neighbour talking about other people's salaries.
I suppose my point was that I don't think that Les and his backroom staff's wages are expensive when put into perspective of the averages of the league + how much we're losing over the course of a year.
i do take your point as well and 4k a week comes pretty damn close to your 50k pa qoute anyways mate

If it's 4k per week, then that's 200k per year (considerably higher than average in our league).
If that's the case PJ saves 15% of what he is forecasting to lose this year by having Les rather than Barnes; that seems pretty sensible from his perspective.
One other thing if he was employing Barnes at that rate it does show he does continue to put his money where his mouth is when he feels he sees an opportunity.

Anyway don't really want to continue having this circular argument, I have my opinion and others have theirs, respect to all men.
Anyway at least we've got Zoom to remember what could have been.
Anyway I'm off to do some work.....see you later my friends.
Happy new year.

I do think Les has done better with all the same players but also had advantages that Barnes never had.
Anyway my own view on the topic is that Barnes has gone and it's pointless for me to continue to defend him, at the end of the day he was extremely unpopular.
I just find it frustrating when some fans skirt over the facts to attack the man or they find it impossible to see the other side to their arguments.
while reading the beginning about us all being optomistic and then the shock sacking of Moore.. it really got to me again!
Barnes came in and for what ever reason it didn't work, then it goes on to explain how it was rather a "shrewd" decision by PJ to put the medical man incharge etc.. i know we had many cutbacks from last season and only an extreme optomist would have expected a repeat of last season HOWEVER i do feel we would not be sitting in relegation at the beginning of 2010 and had it not been for a decent last 6 weeks we may well now be dead and buried... We would surely be sitting with a half decent cushion between us an the drop had we not sacked RM so i will not praise PJ for temporarily fixing a problem HE caused!
I'm enjoying going the game at mo as form is good, however all our hard work and a win still wont get us out of relegation really... were still in massive trouble and a few bad results could shatter everything parry has built...
