January 22 2010

Throughout the season we provide you with a platform to discuss each and every Rovers match whether it be the build-up to kick-off or post match analysis so here we bring you the Match Discussion Thread for Saturday afternoon's Coca-Cola League One match away at MK Dons as Rovers look to continue their quest to get out of the League's bottom four......

Article Header - Match Discussion

Saturday 23rd January - Coca Cola League One

MK Dons v Tranmere R

Kick-Off 3.00pm at Stadium:MK

For those fans who can't make some of the Rovers games this season, particularly the high number of costly and time consuming southern away games, we at Total Tranmere will be providing a Match Discussion Thread on the Site for every Rovers game.

The thread will allow you to discuss everything from the pre-match build up and starting line-up to the game it as it progresses and the post-match anaylsis.

Parry Les

Where possible, Total Tranmere staff will post up the starting line-up and substitutes on the thread as soon as it is made known at the game.

Tranmere of course travel to Milton Keynes Dons on Saturday in Coca-Cola League One, so if you're not going to the game why not join in the banter right here while the game is going on.

Maybe if you have a friend or family member texting you from the game you can post their views here for others to see as the game progresses.

You could also use this thread to discuss other interesting scores throughout the league as well as discussing this game afterwards if you have been along to the game.

What you discuss below is up to you but hopefully it can all be focused on one thread to make it easier for everyone to use.

Tranmere:

Daniels Bakayogo Goodison Taylor Logan Welsh McClaren Edds Moore Curran Gornell.

McCready on bench.

1-0 down and playing poorly. Clueless upfront and shaky at the back.

If we get anything I'll eat my hat!!

Another game with no goals, this is highly concerning now. I listened to the game and all our games at the moment seem to be tight, with hardly anything in them. All you need is a little bit of class going forward to decide games, and we haven't got that.

I struggle to see us scoring the goals to keep us up to be honest, everytime the ball went up to our so called strikers they either fell over or lost it. Gornell is never onside, Moore can't be bothered and Curran works hard with no end product. Les has got to pull of a brilliant signing up front, otherwise we are down.

MK are a good side.. Tuesday is far more important to our survival. We are looking for a striker, we've got Bas to come back very very soon I believe.

a good side yes, but they didn't play well today to be honest. It's only because we were so poor that they got the win. speaking with their fans and listening to their phone in on way home suggests they were not too happy today. Its annoying to think if we'd switched on for first few minutes we may have got a point today regardless of how toothless we look.

Logan had an awful opening 10 minutes and sadly it cost us.

Chalk it off and we go again Tuesday!

special mention for Shuker who came on and partially improved our game. I'd hope he may get a start tuesday but Les seems a stubbarn man set in his 4-3-3 ways currently. If we dont begin to gamble a little more and throw caution to the wind occassionally we aren't going to pick up enough points to survive.

who your shouts for motm? (yes i know it wasn't a brilliant game lol)

we were pretty poor which is why id say shukes actually came in with a shout for it. However Zoom had solid game Goodison also and Daniels with some great saves which could have helped us to a point had we created more up front..

i couldnt choose between them 3 tbh..
Curran had a better game an much improved from Wed, better of the 3 upfront but that wasn't hard.

Fully agree with your first post SWS and as for MOTM I'd say Ash Taylor followed by Daniels who was a busy boy!

MK Dons played poor really but had the better and clearer cut chances in the game.

I expected nothing from today really (or a draw at best) but it's the manner of yet another awful performance that is of most concern for me.

Under Barnes we went to Leeds (a better side than MK Dons) and were battered and that was 'unexceptable' but today a similar display is bizarrely defended.

We must win on Saturday. A failure to do so must surely make even the most optomistic start to doubt and with Shay Logan now suspended for two games after a tenth booking today the signing of McCready suddenly seems all the more crucial!

How can you compare that to Leeds. Here's the facts from the two games:

MK Dons stat shown first is that of the home team
Possession : 57% 43%
Shots On Target : 5 5
Shots Off Target : 8 5

Leeds Stat shown first is that of the home team
Possession : 60% 40%
Shots On Target : 15 5
Shots Off Target : 11 3

We had more posession today, had more shots today, and limited MK to 13 less shots than Leeds, somehow, although we may of been poor, theres no way you can compare those two games. We have become more resillient and had we had a striker today, it sounds, having had 10 shots, that we could of nicked something.

Two more shots yes but how many goals?

3% more posession against a team not as strong as Leeds is hardly progress either but that's just my view on it!

No you just prefer to look at everything with a negative view point! They're a strong side and we lost 1-0. Clearly our defence has improved hugely under Les and by losing only 1-0 at least we're staying in the games. We just need that one striker or attacking midfielder who is going to get the goals for us, because we have a team capable of staying up, it's just that attacking potencey that's lacking

Re: MK Dons v Tranmere Rovers Match Discussion

we lacked a hell of a lot more than this prodigal striker were all banking on. Seriously it's the entire midfield ASWELL as the forward line. there is far too big a gap between the front men and the rest of the team when we attack, and the passing just isn't intelligent enough from our midfield.
I think we need to drop the 4-3-3 or atleast only implement it when the 4-4-2 isn't working. We pretty much have our entire ration of strikers on the pitch and cannot score so we already know that theres nothing on the bench to change that... if curran or ITM came off the bench as a change and bit of competition then maybe it may have a positive effect on the game?
as for ur questioning of attitudes on the 2 results sub i would guess that fans were more optomistic back then but the further into the season we get the lower the expectation has got.. jus a thought?

firstly what a boring 6 weeks since we beat Bristol Rovers.
2 nil nils and a meaningless cup game which generated less than the cost for a tin of coconut massage oil for les.
anyway les really does get away with murder; today was a horrible performance against mk who have been extremely inconsistent of late. as jorge valdano said "if you put @#$%& on a stick hanging from the ceiling of the stadium, there are some fans that will tell you it's a work of art. but it's not it's @#$%& on a stick!". all we need is a striker.
all to play for still i think we've got 10 teams (us to yeovil-southampton) in the relegation battle and 20 games to go.
i'm still sure on present form we will be fine.
on a lighter note i really like that girl in the twingo advert.

Let's not start picking away at what has been achieved over the past few months.

We work as a team now, keep more possession and look organised.

In my opinion, it's time for the 4-3-3 system to go and a more experienced front man to come in. Terry will be good (at this level) no doubts about that, but he needs goals, so send him out on loan to someone like Chester and watch them flood in for him.

We might need a well oiled experienced finisher, but the main problem is that with the current system, we are not creating chances, we are getting the forwards into the final third and then the rest is up to them it seems. We need wingers; Mahon / Barnett and Shuker given direct alternating roles on the flanks with Taylor and Welsh (on central mid who can score) in the middle. ITM with Curran (until Bas and another come in). If the wingers can get into the final third and start threading a few balls into positions, then we have a chance. At the moment, it's too clogged up in the middle area of the goal, we can't get a shot away and there is no creativity, that's the problem, as I see it.

Spot on SWS!!

People just don't seem to get it and I know people can't go to every game but those who don't see certain games, particularly away from home, need to maybe take on board things they don't see and cut out the shocking attitude in making individuals feel small which some people seem to enjoy.

I'm eagerly awaiting this 'striker saviour' on our budgetand hope Les can pull one out of the bag but I doubt it.

Perhaps, and this is just a thought, the midfielders also know how clueless the forwards are, therefore don't make those runs into the box because theye expect the attackers to lose the ball? And the same with their passing, they don't expect the attackers to make the same run's as the passes they are making.

You could also argue that the midfield trio of McLaren, Welsh and Edds (& Taylor too) are set up primarily to defend, and they are defensive midfielders, if we had Barnett/Shuker/Mahon playing maybe it'd be different. But Les has set us up to stop the rot.

I 100% agree with Matt though.

The midfielders are incapable of it it seems. McLaren and Welsh especially yesterday were just absent as was Edds.

442 should be tried away from home in my view.

I'm on fbook and skype.

On Wednesday we had enough chances to win the game, but again we never took them. Even yesterday we had 10 shots. At the moment we've got two midfielders carrying another, and three strikers that, although work hard are absolutely useless in front of goal. We are capable of staying up, all we need is to replace McLaren (with Ash and bring McCready to cb) and to sign a goalscorer, and if money stretches someone who'll play the wide man of the 3 forwards a little better, e.g. Andy Robbo.

We need a goalscorer and we'll stay up, Les is on the look for one and I'm confident he'll find that person.

Les Parry tells his assistants what he wants so he says.
I don't see The Chief as being in anyway suited to coaching strikers and he seems to be failing.
THere's a lack of imagination in the club and maybe another manager is needed ? He has quit Chester !
Parry wants a clean sheet and just prays something will turn up at the other end.
Strikers ? Every club needs one but where are they ?
I'd have them back to goal in training and numbered, and I'd toss a ball in hehind them, call a number and I'd expect that ball in the net smartly. THen I'd introduce the cut out figures .
Practice makes perfect. THe mental attitude is not there either. Agression, dertermination and will.
Strikers are in pairs. There should be an understanding developed in training twixt strikers and a provider.
I fully expect heads to go down and it will take real leadership to turn it round, How can you look up to a physio ?

We've lost ONE game. Our form before yesterday: DDWLWDW. OK, lots of draws there, in those six games we conceeded THREE goals, all in ONE game again Southampton, a side who have a wage budget probably 5 times bigger than ours and money to spend on transfers. So with 5 clean sheets, obviously with all the draws we lack attack power. We need a striker.

The negativity in this thread is silly, earlier in the season we were getting hammered, at the moment we are in good form, some of you seem to of forgotten, having had few league games for a while, how well we're actually doing! If we add a striker and keep up our defensive record we will stay up. It's all about the striker though, I don't see how heads are going to go down from a one goal defeat against a play-off challenging side away from home.

I'm sure the players can look up to Les, he's a well respected man at Tranmere Rovers by all players past and present - otherwise he'd never get away with his physio column!

Look I can't argue that we're doing better but my arguements is are we doing enough?

Unlike some I have nothin against Les and the rest of his Staff and I beleive they are doing the best job they can but I can't see it being enough.

Through everything that goes on I always usually try to be positive on here, I've backed every Manager when other people (who are now moaning about negativity) were being negative themselves and I've always been positive even when Ronnie was under pressure and when Barnes was in charge.

I'm just being realistic and is just my opinion. I'd be delighted to be proven wrong and we stay up so fingers crossed!

Well as I've said, we NEED a striker, whereas you said that we need a whole new midfield to for creativity. Just take yesterday out of the equation, 6 clean sheets in 7. Had we been able to take our chances in games it would have been 6 wins from 7 too. So once we get the goalscorer we will be doing enough to stay up.

Just 'cause we got beat yesterday (and narrowly) doesn't mean we are now doomed. There is 21 games to go and we are five points from safety. We are also fortunate this season that the league (overall) isn't tight unlike the last few years, the top 9 are running away and everyone else is left behind.

Three wins could potentially put us into 11th place.

more needs to be made of loans from the merseyside clubs, seen a lad called de la valle or something like that once in youth cup on setanta for liverpool, good pace good finisher. would be good signing imo. more needs to made of the fact we are one of the closest clubs to the welsh border, we should have the pick of welsh prem. got to b SOMETHING there!

Also it's all very well saying we played a good side yesterday but if we're accepting defeats to good sides then what about games to come against Leeds, Norwich, Charlton, Huddersfield, Colchester etc etc?

Re: MK Dons v Tranmere Rovers Match Discussion
Posted by: Mikey (IP Logged)

Leeds, Norwich, Hudders, Soton are home games, chance of sneaking points. Charlton is a write off.

I'm more concerned about beating the teams around us, the points total to stay in this league will be lower than in previous years IMO, because everyone is "down there" so to speak.

As I said, 3 wins could put us 11th.

Think you mean Lauri Dalla Valle Rovers125, I've heard good stuff about him too, although you never know what you'll get with Liverpool e.g. Godwin Antwi. As for Everton we get nothing from them! They even took JA's testimonial too seriously and we're flying in with tackles everywhere it was stupid! About the Welsh Prem, are they the right standard though? We had Chris Sharp on trial here in summer and turned him down, yet hasn't he hit 20-25 goals for Bangor this season?

True but the teams around us are mostly (but not all) away games really.

As for Sharp, I can't say much on here but no thanks..

Home:
Yeovil, Oldham, Hartlepool, Orient, Wycombe, Exeter.

Away:
Gillingham, Southend, Brentford, Brighton, Stockport.

Also got away games to Walsall, Swindon and Bristol Rovers where we have a chance of something, the other two away games are Charlton and Colchester.

Other home games include Leeds, Huddersfield, Southampton and Norwich.

Providing we win the six home games and 3 away games and the odd draw here and there we'll be fine.

It's all about the goalscorer though.

have we managed to win 3 consec games all season? you make it sound so easy mikey mate!!

right in regards to above you saying midfielders may not be making those passes due to lack of faith in strikers etc.. they should never give up really regardless, just play your own game and let the rest of the team worry about theirs, but my point was that you may well be right alls i was saying is that there are no intelligent passes coming from midfield i didn't go into why.
I also agree with you Les is starting from the back and making us hard to beat, but you said it yourself roughly 6 clean sheets in last ten... I'd argue that his work there is done, confidence is back in the defence and now we should be starting to build on the rest of our game because like sub says, we ain't gonna get enough points.
i agree pushing ash up an bringing mcready may well improve us as a whole depending that mcready is still the player we recall from like 3 yrs ago.. but still ash an welsh are too much defensive we had it right with kay an jenno we need a blend in the middle

Yeah we haven't won 3 consecutive games, but as I said, and as you just agreed, the defence are doing great. We are barely conceeding so if we get that firepower and reintroduce some wingers, what's to say we can't? We're fortunate in that we've got to play many games against teams close to us.

One defeat and it's all doom and gloom, but over the past 8 games we've lost only two, kept 6 clean sheets, conceeded only four goals and scored 8. Over the past 8 games we've picked up 12 points from a possible 24. If we continue that points ratio we'll pick up a further 31 points, which will be enough to keep us up alone but if we get a striker it'll be much more I would hope and think.

Les said he was working on defence but wanted others...midfield... to back up the back four.
They may be doing that at the expense of their midfield duties, leaving a lack of support for forwards ?
GIve me a 3-2 win.

it is obviously vital we beat the teams near the bottom of the table if we are to have a hope of staying up this season but we need to make more of an effort against the bigger teams.
Orient currently are leading at charlton so if were positive enough we should be able to give it a decent go.

I was disappointed with the comments from Les after saturdays game saying that we dont have the players to change how we play, we had shuker mahon & barnett on the bench so we could have easily gone 4-4-2 and been more positive.

Orient at valley, wycombe and Exeter vs leeds..
Seems were the only team in the survival pack who don't have the belief we can beat these kind of teams.

The pressure for 2moro just doubled!
We need win so bad. Even if its just for belief an confidence more than the points
