Irons on Fire as Legends Notch Charity Victory

Kenny Irons proved to be the star turn as a Tranmere Legends side won 4-0 against a Marine Legends side in charity game at Vauxhall Motors on Sunday afternoon in aid of the Jane Lowe Memorial and the Hospice of the Good Shepherd.....

After the highs of Saturday's 2-0 home win for Rovers over Millwall that kept their fight for League One survival going on to the very last day of the season, it came to the turn of the Rovers Legends to entertain on Sunday afternoon and in the end it was a comfortable win against a Marine Legends side with Kenny Irons the star man in a 4-0 win.

Perhaps less big name legends than promised turned up for this charity game at Vauxhall Motors Rivacre Park ground and indeed the match programme itself had suggested more legends would play but in spite of this there were  a number of familiar faces in the Rovers side as they took on a Marine Legends side in aid of the Hospice of the Good Shepherd at the Jane Lowe Memorial Day.

After a game between the workers of Vauxhall Motors and the Kings Arms FC which saw tremendous goal scored from almost the halfway line, the main event came round at 1.00pm as Tranmere Legends, featuring Eric Nixon's son in goal as well as well known names in Dave Challinor, Shaun Garnett, Kenny Irons, Ian Muir and Gary Jones as well as Lee McDonough who is the brother in law of Jane Lowe and some local players.

After a minutes silence in memory of Jane, the game kicked off with Kenny Irons proving he still has the touch and vision in midfield and early in the game, event organiser Chris Camden who used to play for both Rovers and Marine but played in this game for Marine, was twice caught offside when clean through, much to his annoyance at the linesman.

After a goalless first half, Rovers took the lead just before the interval when Kenny Irons hit a weak looking shot straight at the goalkeeper but it squirmed through his legs and into the net to give the Rovers legends side (minus an injured Chris Malkin who was reportedly watching from the sidelines) a half time lead.

In the second half it was a pretty even affair throughout although the scoreline suggests otherwise as the unstoppable Kenny Irons played in Ian Muir for a second Rovers goal, Muir chipping over the stricken keeper before shortly afterwards, second half substitute Luke Camden, son of Chris Camden won a free kick about 25 yards from goal which Irons put in the top corner of the goal for 3-0.

The scoring was completed when Luke Camden himself added a fourth but Marine weren't done and had three efforts cleared off the line towards the end including one with the very last chance of the game before the final whistle.

So it was game over and 4-0 to Rovers Legends and as the players left the pitch including Kenny Irons with a can of Carling, the fans headed to the Social Club for further entertainment and a free bowl of scouse!

It was great to see some of the players from my childhood out on the pitch yet again especially Kenny Irons and the legend that is Ian Muir.

Hopefully the event raised lots of money for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd in memory of Jane Lowe and if we get news on the figure raised we will bring it to you whilst a picture special fromthe game will follow later in the week.
