Tranmere Rovers have today announced that they have released six players as preperations start for the 2010/11 season.

Rovers have released strikers Bas Savage, Josh MacAuley and Kithson Bain, midfielders Charlie Barnett and Chris Shuker and versatile Australian Gareth Edds.

Edds, Savage and Barnett have all been at Tranmere for two seasons after being brought to the club by Ronnie Moore, and although it is hardly surprising that Barnett, who has made only a handful of appearances this season, has been released, it is a shock that the effective Gareth Edds and influential Bas Savage, who has recently recovered from an achillies injury, have both been allowed to leave the club.

Edds Gareth

Josh MacAuley came through the clubs youth system but failed to ever truely break into the youth team, whilst Kithson Bain, a John Barnes signing, arrived from Grenada earlier this season but again failed to ever get a real first team chance.

Finally, winger Chris Shuker arrived from Barnsley four years ago and was an affective player for the club at first, voted into the League One PFA team of the year for the 2006/07 season.

However, a horrible injury picked up against Carlisle in 2007 kept Shuker out for some time and he failed to ever recover his best form for the club, and he's been very much a bit part player this season.

Speaking to the media this morning, Tranmere boss Les Parry, who's contract at the club expires this summer, said "I'd like to thank the six players for their time at Prenton Park and wish them all the best for the future.

We've targeted areas we feel we need to improve and will be working hard over the summer to bring those players to the club."

Tranmere have also released all but one of their second year scholars, namely Jay Ashcroft, Ross Rule, Tom Baker and Alex Pursehouse.

Total Tranmere would like to echo Les Parry's sentiments, in thanking all the players for their efforts whilst at Prenton Park and wish them all the best for the future.

I am disgusted Edds and Savage have been released. I really think Bas is a great Target man at this level, and we need Edds versatility and attitude.

Hopefully we'll get someone half decent in to replace them. Unless of course, Savage and Edds wanted off? Or is it we can't afford to keep them. Either way, I'm dissapointed.

Edds never sets the world on fire, but he always worked hard.

Lets see what happens then hey.

Not really unexpected!
Made up Fraughan got another contract.
The only surprise is that Curran and Gornell both got contracts. I was expecting one or other, but not both.

Edds is the most surprising. Surely someone like him who can play in more than 1 position is a valuable asset to a small squad.

I have heard that players that les wants are alredy being lined up!
I have no idea who they are!
Don't be surprised if you don't find out till the end of June, cos most players are contracted till then.

I was never a fan of Edds but if the budget is gonna be cut AGAIN, then surely we need versatile players.

Surprised at that one.

Disappointed Edds has been released, I think he's a strong, hardworking player and his veratility is very useful. Really not bothered about the rest leaving though

A bit disappointed about Edds as I really rate him but if he's kept Welsh and has McLaren (and does bring in Labidie) then I suppose something had to give.

As mentioned above though his versatility will be missed.

Pretty happy on whole though as I never rated Bas whilst Shuker and Barnett were not getting a game so free up wages for new players.

I wonder if Ronnie will snap up any of these players and if any of them will therefore be back at Prenton Park next season?

i agree on barnett and shukes. Good players but not getting used and shukes must be one of the highest earners. Supprised at edds and bas but if les has lined up maybe ladabie, and i hope so, and also a target man then should be ok. But quite a few players needed. Gonna be an interesting summer.

scott vernon was released by colchester so maybe he could be a target as we did miss out on him when trying to get a loan striker in, just a thought.

How can u justify giving Craig Curran a contract and not savage. Its true bas does not score many goals but his hold up play and height are a big thing for us . Agree with the rest but i do feel sorry for edds as he has put in some good performances this season. Does anyone know about ITM ? Is he still under conract when does it run out ?

curran is a youngster who is still learning and could yet get better and better, and also could net us a transfer fee in the future! Bas isn't getting any younger, has just come back from serious injury, and might never get back to where he was. Is that justification enough?

i have heard johnson wants to sign labirde and is willing to pay so if thats the case then edds to go isnt a loss as he has mainly played in midfiled on thle other hand he must have people lined up because he wouldnt release edds with no logan as he was on loan broomes has done well there but he cant do it every game

After the game on saturday I spoke to Johnson and asked him what next season holds for us to which he replied "I can't tell you because you'll head staright for the bookies"

Couple this with the message in the programme and maybe we have a bigger budget with some quality names being lined up to spend it on!

he may have meant that the budget will be cut again, which would mean another relegation fight.

Its still early days though, as annoying as it is (we're all chomping at the bit for news on signings,) the news about players probably wont be released until mid June!

As far as I am aware, it is a further cut in the playing staff budget!
That is if no-one invests in the club.
I know PJ won't!

I think the only surprise for me is Edds. Bas doesn't score enough goals, Barnett hasn't had a run in the team this season and apparently this is due to his attitude, despite being one of our better players last term, Josh never really broke into the team nor did Bain and Shukes has never been the same since his injury.

Who do people want to sign, presuming you've seen which players clubs are releasing?

I'd like Akinbiyi and Akinbfenwa.

is it right that les is making these decisions tho? Surely if a new manager is coming in then surely it would be up to him to decide?

Unless a decision has already been made where Les is and he will be manager next year and beyond....sentiment of Saturday aside I bloody hope not!!

I wouldn't be Akin to that happening!(Sm163)

I spoke to Les for about 25 minutes on Saturday after the game and he suggested that the budget is so low already that it can't be cut any further for this season but I guess that remains to be seen.

Interesting to hear what you said though Barrie particularly as your theory has met my ears before during the season just ended.

We'll see though I guess.

Gutted about Edds and Savage. If money rumours here are true why not pay of McLaren and retain Edds.

I agree mate that a lot of things certainly don't point to any kind of increased money or budget so it is strange really unless its some kind of future happening (which I don't know).

Thats the thing really, I like Edds but he's just a body really, decent if you need numbers but not really needed when you've a number of midfielders under contract which we have.

Not going to get better or potentially get a fee

I agree with what u guys are staying but les parry has kept tranmere up this season and if he is the manager next season then i have every trust in him and he will bring in good hard working player who want to play for the club just like ladabie and robinson! Just trust les he will do right by this club and bring in good players!

I think you can safely say Les was given the nod to carry on by Mr Johnson on saturday.Les has already said he dined with the chairman and directors after the match, and next season was obviously the topic of conversation.Theres no way in the world Les would have been allowed to release players if another manager was being sought.Les Parry will be our gaffer next season,it just hasnt been confirmed yet.
