Tranmere's midfield for next season has today been boosted by the news that John Welsh has put pen to paper on a new two year deal which will keep him at Prenton Park until June 2012.

The 26-year old former Liverpool, Chester and Hull City player joined Rovers last summer from Hull City after being picked out by then manager John Barnes and went on to make 52 appearances.

Welsh also scored four goals including the winner of the supporters' Goal of the Season vote for his strike against Gillingham in the first home league game of the season.

Welsh John

John Welsh is one of four players from last season's almost relegated squad to be offered a new deal and his signature today means that with Craig Curran moving to Carlisle United yesterday, only left back Zoumana Bakayogo remains to sign with Marlon Broomes and Ryan Fraughan  signing their new deals.

Welsh becomes the seventh player to sign a new contract this summer in total with Joss Labadie and Timothy Cathalina as new signings along with Jack Mackreth and Ash Taylor signing contracts also.

Speaking of Welsh's signing today, Manager Les Parry said:....

"John performed consistently well for us last season so I'm pleased he has signed a new contract."

"He's a hard working midfielder, a great character to have around the Club and a very enthusiastic professional."

"He formed good partnerships with Ash Taylor, Joss Labadie and Paul McLaren during last season and hopefully they'll continue where they left off."

Great news. A player who grew into his role in the team last year and was very important towards the end of the season. Glad he'll be staying.
