Former Liverpool midfielder John Welsh joined Tranmere Rovers on a one-year deal in summer 2009 before signing a new two-year contract ahead of the 2010/11 campaign.

The Scouser started his career with his boyhood club, Liverpool, where he made ten first team appearances and as well as playing in the Premier League, he was part of Liverpool's 2005 Champions League winning side.

After spending the 2005/06 season on loan at Hull, Welsh left the Merseyside club for the KC Stadium as part of a swap deal for winger Paul Anderson and would spend three years with the club as they rose to the Premier League.

However, injuries curtailed Welsh's career at Hull, and after loan spells at Chester City, Bury and Carlisle between January 2008 and May 2009, he was released following the end of his contract with the Tigers.

Upon his release, Welsh signed for Tranmere as he looked to rebuild his career, and after a slow start at Prenton Park, the midfielder began to make a name for himself after John Barnes was replaced in the managerial hotseat, becoming a crucial player for the side as he made 52 appearances, missing just one game.

Welsh plays with his heart on his sleeve and isn't the type of player to back out of a tackle, as he plays right in the centre of Tranmere's midfield.

Also capable of scoring the odd screamer, Welsh is a good passer of the ball and is a box to box player who is effective in both defence and attack.
