Greenacre is Top Striker in Team of the Decade!

After another week of your votes, the results are in for our first Tranmere striker of the decade as Chris Greenacre joins the other players who have so far made the team......
After another week of your votes, it has been decided by Rovers fans that Chris Greenacre is the first striker to take his place in our Tranmere Rovers Team of the Decade (2000’s) , becoming the tenth player to make the team.
As you can see from the poll results below it was perhaps surprisingly a comfortable victory for Greenacre who beat off competition from a number of other striking greats from the past ten years to take an easy poll victory....

Chris Greenacre began his playing career in the North West as Manchester City trainee and after four loan spells from Maine Road to Cardiff, Blackpool, Scarborough and Northampton, he eventually found himself on loan for a fifth time at Mansfield Town and after five goals in twelve games for the Stags, he eventually signed for them permanently in January 2000.
A further 120 starts for Mansfield brought 53 goals and this impressive record saw him earn a move to Stoke in 2002. His time at Stoke was injury plagued, making 44 starts and scoring just nine times over three years before Tranmere acquired his services in the summer of 2005.
Greenacre’s first season at Rovers saw the squad struggle against relegation under Brian Little after the loss of three key players from the play-off making team of the season before (Ryan Taylor, Paul Hall and Iain Hume), with Rovers only escaping the drop on the penultimate weekend of the season thanks to a 2-1 win at MK Dons.
In total, Chris Greenacre made 141 starts for Rovers scoring 53 times, ironically the same amount of goals he netted in his time at Mansfield excluding his loan spell and became a popular figure amongst Rovers fans.
In May 2009, Greenacre’s contract came to an end after an injury hit season and he decided to move abroad to play for Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand but he will always be remembered as a hard-working player who never quite got the recognition he deserved with some Rovers fans, despite his goals.

In the next week you will be voting for the second of two strikers to enter into the team as the runners-up from this weeks’ poll battle it out for the eleventh and final place and at the end of the week the winner will be revealed and placed in the Dream Team.
