Michael Kay and Robbie Weir have today signed permanent contracts at Prenton Park
Defender Michael Kay and
midfielder Robbie Weir have today signed new one-year contracts with Tranmere Rovers.
Kay, 21, signed for Rovers in
January, on loan from Sunderland. The right back played 22 times for Les
Parry’s side, scoring in the 4-0 win over Exeter City at Prenton Park in April.
Weir
also joined Tranmere on loan from Sunderland in February and made 18
appearances. The 22-year old midfielder joined Sunderland at the age of 16 from
Northern Irish side Larne and has spent the past five seasons at the Stadium of
Light.
Their new contract’s comes into
effect on July 1st 2011.
Manager Les Parry said: “Michael
did really well for us while he was on loan here so I’m delighted he’ll be with
us next season.
“He settled into our back four
very comfortably and showed he’s more than capable of playing in League 1. He’s
got an excellent attitude and has a bright future ahead of him.”
“I’m really pleased Robbie has
joined us. Robbie’s a classy and versatile player who did really well here
while on loan and his style of play suits the midfielders we already have at
the Club.
“He’s got a great attitude and is
a pleasure to work with and he’s an excellent addition to our squad.”
Michael added: “I really enjoyed
playing first team football with Tranmere last season, it’s a decent standard
in this division.
“It’s a good club to be at with a
great team spirit and I’m really pleased to have signed my new contract.
“I’m looking forward to the new
season, hopefully getting a lot more games under my belt and the team doing
well.”
Robbie Weir stated: “I really
enjoyed playing football at Tranmere last season while I was on loan so it was
an easy decision for me to stay here.
“I like the club, the staff and
the players and am happy to sign up for the season.
“We showed good form towards the end of last
season and if we can start in the same way then we should be really
competitive.”

We've known this for a while, but it's good to finally get the deals done and also reassuring that both have said they enjoyed playing here. They seem to speak fondly of the club, which is a positive thing.
Did these two used to be in our Academy? Just seen a twitter post on the home page, saying good luck to former academy players Weir and Kay? Or does that mean Sunderland?
As said its been known for a while. If I am going to be brutally honest I am not keen on either. Kay started well but fell badly, and Weir had 1 or 2 decentish games but never really stamped any authority on the games and would largely go missing.
But hey a new start and hopefully they both prove me wrong.

Ricci, I think they'll both come good with time. I was impressed with Kay more so than Weir, but Weir showed potential at times and I think is definately worth a deal. Fingers crossed they'll kick on from last season.
I think Weir is@#$%&but glad Kay has signed. That lad has potential IMO, though form dipped at the end of the season when he had no competition for his place. Hopefully Holmes will push him.
Weir looks **** because he likes to pass the ball which he was, on the whole, unable to do. Partly due to tactics in away games and at times in home games to, but not helped by our pitch.
MOTM in a few games though, one home game which I can't recall who we were playing against whilst at Orient away he was excellent.
I think you mean John Welsh (whom before anyone jumps on me, is a good player when he sticks to doing what he is good at. Soon as he thinks he has the Paul Scholes passing range though..)
I think weir is a decent passer of the ball and as long as the ball is passed on the floor and through midfield more he will make a telling conribution
Good signings, but I would have liked 2 year options. 1 year for both looks like Tranmere are starting to use a rotating door policy, but that then means some players can go too soon, when they look good.
Tranmere need players to build a squad around, because Goodison is still here, but he's not a solution.
Maybe 3 years doesn't sound good to some people, but any player not doing it at this level should at least be worth a bit of resale value and when you get them for nothing, considering what they get paid, the fees obtained from selling after 1-2 years, I think would be enough to recoup around 1-2 years worth of wages for some.
Short deals are good if some players turn out be chaff and can be let go, but then it's also bad when the wheat can get picked by others too easily.
Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.
It seems that both playershave ability but runs in first team will help.they are still young but if we have another option of a year ontop of their dealswe either have two very good players or if they want away we still could get something as in the cressa case.
