After two injury hit years at Tranmere Rovers, midfielder Alan Mahon has left the club by mutual consent.
The Republic of Ireland player re-joined Tranmere on a three-year deal in 2009 when John Barnes was manager, but made just 20 appearances for the club in his first season back on the Wirral before failing to play a single game last year due to injuries.
The 33-year old was in his second spell at Tranmere, having initially joined the club in 1995, staying for five years and helping the club to their only ever major cup final to date, the Worthington Cup Final, at Wembley in 2000.
However, following the end of his contract he left John Aldridge's side for Sporting Lisbon, before going on to play for Blackburn, Cardiff, Ipswich, Wigan, Burnley and Blackpool before returning to the Wirral.
In total, Mahon, who back in his day was one of Tranmere's finest ever players, made 162 appearances for the club over his two spells, scoring fifteen goals.
Tranmere manager Les Parry told the club's official website: "I'm sorry to see Alan leave Tranmere Rovers and this has been the hardest decision I've had to make since taking over as Manager.
"After a long and amicable discussion with Alan we both agreed that it would be in the interest of Tranmere and Alan that we parted company.
"I picked Alan up from the airport when he first came over from Ireland as a fresh faced 15 year old and we have developed a great friendship.
"I wish him well in whatever he decides to do."
Mahon added: "I'm sad to leave the Club as it's been such a big part of my life but it's the best thing for me and Tranmere that we part ways at this time as it will allow the Manager to bring in new talent.
"Tranmere will always have a special place in my heart as it's the club I began my career at and where I made so many friends.
"I wish everyone at the Club the best of luck in the future and I'm sure I'll be back to visit and watch the team."

In my opinion Mahon should have gone a long time ago! Allbeit a nice fellow and all that, how much has he been creaming off are not very big pot of money to pay players with! What did we get in return, sweet FA! I presume without mutual consent he would have been with us for another season! I hope that like many others we use his salary to start recruiting some new players. Which leads me on to why are we not told exactly what we got for Dale? Whats the big secret, surely if we did not get as much as expected, other clubs may think twice before adding another 0 or two onto there players asking price! You only have to look around other clubs who seem to be snatching up players in some cases for a pittance. Unless Les has a master plan and the longer this lack of transfers takes I seriously feel another season of nail biteing. We need players in now to gell with one another, get the formation right before the season starts. How many players did we release and how many have we brought in? Its not rocket science. Come on Tranmere, keep the fans informed (Another sore point, but thats another story), and tell us what the bloody hell is going on. I'll get off my soap box now. Onwards and upwards (Hopefully)
i cant seem to get out of my head how nice guy mahon went to sporting of portugal ,played 1/2 a game and then to blackburn.Unless im wrong Rovers never got so much as a penny and therefore after his last two years more like good riddance.Maybe he has another version which i would love to hear.
You are wrong, Tranmere did get money for him, because we moved back to England within 12 months of leaving Tranmere. If I recall correctly, he rushed that transfer through to make sure Rovers did get some money.
I suspect the reason we don't hear about how much has come into the coffers from the Jennings transfer is that the money is already earmarked for emergency repairs to the Main Stand.
Which ever member of the board agreed to the 3 year deal should be ashamed! I remember LR refusing to give Paul Hall a two year contract, and Paul at the time had a body that could cope more so than Alan's!
Shame though, technically good player but his body is past it.
How much money would that have been?Why did he go to portugal in the first place because if it was more successfulWE would not have had any of the money he so GOT trfc by RUSHING back within the 12 months I may have been wrong but to me there was never any intent to earn trfc any money initially and morally wrong when as a15 yr old you were guided by the club

One main reason he left, was because he got his head filled with talk of bigger things and better money and not propping up a declining 2nd tier team, by an agent that wasn't his.
Aldo wanted him to sign a new deal but he wouldn't. Aldo was annoyed at the agent sticking his nose in and threatened to drop Mahon unless he signed and Mahon refused.
Tranmere were about 15th at that point and Aldo dropped him. He only picked him again for about the last 4-6 games of the season when Tranmere slipped to approximately 2-3 places from relegation.
He was rumoured to be a possible £3,000,000 transfer had he been contracted.
It would have been better, if Aldo had persuaded him to take something like another 18-24 months, with some kind of release clause of say £1,000,000, instead of taking a gunslinger approach to Mahon.
Plus playing him and finishing higher with a bit more prize money, means possibly have a bit more cash for a player capable of helping the team stay up, as they went down the following season, even if Mahon had walked.
Fantastic player Aldo, but one or two of his managerial decisions were a little iffy.
Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.
