Preston NE v Tranmere Rovers Match Discussion

If you can't make Tranmere's game away at Preston North End on Saturday afternoon, why not join in the banter right here with other Rovers fans who are unable to attend......

Article Header - Match Discussion

For those fans who can't make some of the Rovers games this season, particularly the more costly and time consuming southern away games, we at Total Tranmere will be providing a Match Discussion Thread on the Site for every Rovers game.

The thread will allow you to discuss everything from the pre-match build up and starting line-up to the game it as it progresses and the post-match analysis.

Stadium - Preston (Temp)

Where possible, Total Tranmere staff will post up the starting line-up and substitutes on the thread as soon as it is made known at the game as well as a half-time report on how the game is going for the benefit of those who are unable to make it.

Tranmere of course travel to Preston North End on Saturday afternoon in NPower League One so if you're not going to the game why not join in the banter right here while the game is going on?

Maybe if you have a friend or family member texting you from the game you can post their views here for others to see as the game progresses.

You could also use this thread to discuss other interesting scores throughout the league as well as discussing this game afterwards if you have been along to the game.

What you discuss below is up to you but hopefully it can all be focused on one thread to make it easier for everyone to use.

Admin staff will try and add the team and updates on the game on this thread where possible whilst there will also be our usual update service from our Twitter feed @totaltranmere so if you are not already following us it may be worth doing so!

If Turner is out with a foot problem as might be the case I'd consider a 2-1 for Rovers.

The back 4 and Fon proved themselves against Sheff U, so I think they can manage not to leak goals really badly and keep it to 0 or 1.

I think if Rovers get 2 it will be Enoch and Baxter. Oooh controversial (Sm7).

Just what we did not want a penalty against us 1-0 down now
they do not require any help like penalties to score, come on lets see if we can pull it back to 1-1 that will do for today.

Too many people didn't turn up for us today, namely Weir, Buchanan, Raven and Enoch.

Thought apart from them we were ok and deserved a draw, motm goes to the Akinator though he definitely should have been looking to work the 'keeper at least with that volley/shot at the end.

Why do referees just hate us?

i was pleasantly surprised. i thought we played with good shape at times and had a great spirit. akins showed some great skill, our stand out player, just shame he doesn't put them away. baxter looked ok at times. goody was an absolute rock, that guy is a legend.

we looked every bit the match for preston and considering the gulf in finances and crowds etc that is a testament to the team.

was great to see hume get such a good response from the tranmere crowd as went off. also the atmosphere in the tranmere end was among the best i've experienced in away games. though to be fair most away games i get to are ones down south where we only bring small numbers,

I thought we were excellent in parts today, with the final third again our problem. Agree with Mikey, the players he has mentioned above were not great, Weir seemed like he wanted Preston to score a third, he let Mellor through twice towards the end.

It is hard to be critical though. It was never a penalty and I am sick of decisions like that going against us. I am still worried by our forwards, Enoch looks a shadow of the player he was and Muzza looks a bit out of his depth to me.

Akins was superb. MOTM and brilliant. I hope we can keep that up, with Robbo and Devaney to come back in.

lack of goals from our forwards will continually cost us this season.

An important game against what is a struggling bournemouth next saturday as two tricky away games at charlton & amazing to say it hartlepool

We can't look away from the fact that once again we had a number of chances and didn't take them...but my God we played well today and we were absolutely robbed by Mellor conning the referee for the penalty.

Despite missing a number of chances, we played fantastic in my opinion today. Akins was stunning. He absolutely ran them ragged. Passed so well, beat his man constantly and got Parry sent off.

Welsh was on top form again, Taylor had a very solid game and on top of that new signing Baxter looked very good.

Other than the goals, you have to ask how much did OFW actually do? I thought the defence had a good game, bar Buchanan who had an absolute stinker and let them in too many times.

Officials not good enough, end of. Offside against a goal kick...disgraceful!

Was it Baxter who got kicked in the head? Yet conceded a free-kick.. somehow.

The result was a good performance from what I know of tha game, but the penalty was harsh. Goodison could arguably be the man of the match, though it would seem Akins could be and Taylor worth a mention.

It's a pity it seems one of Enochs passes was just off the mark for setting one up.

Enoch did score in the last game, so hopefully he'll start getting more goals and assists. I didn't expect him to score in this one, because I didn't get over optimistic and expect him to suddenly go on a hot streak.

I'm hopeful he'll score at least one, or set one up in the next couple of games and slowly but surely get some form back.

Preston were fortunate to et the win really, but the positives must be capitalised on and put to good use for the future and I do feel Tranmere will get stronger when players like Robbo and Devaney come back.

Noticed when doing the match stats just before that the referee was from Lancashire (my guess would be Preston) and that says it all!

A game in which we dominated a lot of the time but were hit by another Mellor dive and a goal on the break against the run of play.

Agree with some of the above that certain players didn't perform as we know they can with Buchanan having an uncharacteristic struggle today.

Man of the Match was Akins by some distance and the highlight of the afternoon for me was Akins high-fiving the TRFC pitch invaders after the goal as they were escorted away!

Some of the best football we've played in years. We battered them and their MOTM being the centre back says it all.

Officials a joke from the late tackle on raven early in the first half which went unpunished when it could have been a red to offside from a goal kick etc....

Akins superb I've heard he's one of our best players in training and he's starting to show why. Goodison immense again just a shame he didnt put the cheating scouser on his @#$%& a few more times!!!

Thought buchancan did alright to be fair, I think the ridiculous yellow card affected him as he seemed to be reluctant to go into the 50-50's second half.

Like the look of baxter, they had alexander watching him closely but if we can get him more of the ball v bournemouth i think he'll do some damage.

Enoch looked the weak link to me and I wonder with our better football style now whether we could play without a big target man?

I'd be interested to see a front line of devaney baxter mcgurk with akins in the centre. Let them switch and interchange ala barca/man u. I think with the new style we need more movement in the middle which enoch/tiryaki aren't going to give us.

Akins was superb as was Goodison. Thought McGurk should be more in the middle and that Zoom shpould have played to get them crosses in. Saying that, Enoch, for such a big man is very poor.On the floor sometimes good but in the air, hopeless.
Relatives of my son who are all PNE fans with who we had a dribk before and after the game thought we very unlucky and were very happy that they had won, when they should at most only have had a point.
Great day out and what a great ground.
Oh and the numpties who put the fingers up and threaten the opposing fans all match, don't they realise there are cameras and Police watching them! Thrown out and then wonder why, thicko's!

i agree with whats been said to a point, thought that was our best footballing display of the season! every player gave there all and as a team we deserved more than we got, if we continue to play like that we are in for a decent season. think les has a put together a very good squad, no real negatives based on performance, akins MOM closely follwed by the fans! bring on next week and lets get behind the lads again.[:wor kid:]

hello, thought i would respond to these comments after yesterdays match.

firstly i thought you played very well and probably deserved something from the match you can tell by the reaction of the fans at the final whistle that it was more relief than anything else. your right winger (not sure of the name) tore our left back parry to pieces at times and was shown two yellows through your players skill and persistance. baxter will prove to be a shrewed signing and i am sure he will score quite a few goals for you over the season.

i thought you came and took the game to preston and just came up short against a team who are flying at the moment..much repsect.

also just seen hughjarce comments regarding fans and sticking fingers up etc. i can also comment that both sets of fans made gestures to each other etc, outside of the ground gestures were flying towards each other etc. its very naivie to think that just one set of fans were doing this. @#$%& for tat i would say.

regarding the referee i must point out he made some strange decisions against both sides but would not on reflection say he favoured any side. you have said about the penalty, it was soft yes but if you pull shirts in the area you will give away penalties that is a fact, mellor did go down easily (he often does) but a foul was committed and the ref gave it, some may call it sportsmanship but wouldn't you want your player to do the same... i think yes.

goodison....could have been sent of twice, once where in the 1st 10 mins wnet straight through the back of mellor two footed (happened on the touchline near away fans, right next too me) and also the off the ball elbow right on half time when procter went down. i did see both incidents and yes both were straight reds. he got away with it and stayed on the pitch.

So, in short thought it was a good match with both teams giving 100%, we won the match yesterday but it could have been so different. its hard to accept i know but i don't think the referee gave too much to either side, and the things you think went against you are certainly balanced with the things you got away with.

i look forward to the return match

"goodison....could have been sent of twice, once where in the 1st 10 mins wnet straight through the back of mellor two footed (happened on the touchline near away fans, right next too me)"

That was never a red card, it wasn't even a booking. In fact it's one of the few things an otherwise very bias referee actually got right on the day.

He gave offside from a goal-kick FFS and you got the ball. WTF is all that about.

It`s funny when you read some reports of the match in the Sunday papers were they state Preston were all over us like a rash esp when their down to ten men(any one would think it was for most of the match) on the pitch so it gives
the idea we were not in the game at any time and the fact based on the ninety minutes we were lucky to keep it to 2-1 so I think these reporters wear tinted glasses and do not see a true reflection of the game perhaps they do not like us and only like the *so called fashionable clubs*in this league it goes back a long way to the days of John King and Aldo and Co when we had good press in those days and we were a little bit in favour and had some repute with the national media, oh well we will have to try that bit harder and get up the league and beat the odds and get into a play off place, and as a postscript I think we gave as we got yesterday and deserved a point, I`ll get of me soap box(Sm161) now onwards and upwards

Nice to see Preston fan on discussing the game with fair comments. I felt the lads took the game to Preston and were far the better side for the first half without a doubt.

Mellor dived - full stop - and it was idiot linesman by us who gave it...... he was poor throughout.

Akins was my MoM again - terrorised the full back and looking really strong. Hopefully Devaney back for McGurk next week, not Akins.

What difference in finances? We are officially SKINT and have offloaded all our big earners. We have a wage cap of £4000 a week. You outplayed us to be fair and on another day could have walked away with all 3 points. That was a nailed on penalty though, WINK! haha.

Re: Preston NE v Tranmere Rovers Match Discussion

Is that 4000 a week total or per player?

If the latter then a wage cap of £4000 a week answers your question. It's probably double what our highest earners are on (barring one or two perhaps).

I heard Mellor is on more than £4,000 a week, the figure reported was £10,000, but I think it's probably a little innaccurate.

Peryhaps the wage of £4,000 is an average wage, not a top wage.

£4k a week is 100% definitely more than double our top earner.

Something I heard the Notts County chairman say about Enoch being our highest earner as well, if that's true, I think £4k might be more than triple our highest earner.

Just read Phil Brown's programme notes that say the Preston squad flew to Southampton for the game on Wednesday in the Carling Cup.

Not bad for a team that's 'skint'!!

Re: Preston NE v Tranmere Rovers Match Discussion

Fine new ground average per player £4000+ wages flying to away games(Southampton)and I bet it was not on a Dakota and their *skint* some one must be bank rolling them or their gates manage cover costs or one day it will go pear shaped if the banks say no more ££££££ some how they may be doing what they do well or we have got it badly wrong no players on £4000+ a ground that now needs some TLC a main stand that needs pulling down or in the short term a coat of paint on it`s corrugated sheeting(pity it was not recovered with new sheeting when ground was redeveloped) and areas in our newer stands replacement seating are required were seats have faded away and are beginning to have areas of no seating it`s a shame that the work done years ago is becoming a bit tatty round the edges.
Still we will get behind the lads and hope we can go from strength to strength on the pitch onwards and upwards and you never know some rich Arab might want a football club to play with one day( Does any oil rich (Sm81)Prince in United Arab Emirates go on Total Tranmere message board out there were open for offers)

I'd be wondering how it's any business of someone else Chairman to know what a player like Enoch is on.

They might have tried to buy him, but does that earn them the right to know what he's paid, if they were denied the right to talk to him anyway?

I actually thought Devaney might be the top earner, in light of his recent playing past, age and experience.

I thikn without the Jenning's money he might not have come, but Robbo might still have signed, espeically if he's getting what he was on last season.

Goodison was everywhere! There were times when he was up the other end and I was thinking 'all it will take is a quick break and we'll be caught' Goody isn't exactly the fastest anymore'. But that quibble aside, I thought he was an absolute rock. The timing of his tackles, his positioning, the lot. There can't be many better in this league.

My Grandson & I Have Season tickets in the Johnny King Stand. My Grandson who is only six asked if he could go to an away game as he had just worked out what the difference was in the programme when teams had an A & a H against them. so with the Preston game not to far away I obtained the tickets for the coach & the Match Tickets. Now I am No Prude and can swear with the best of them but the filth and obsenities that were shouted by some so called rovers supporters in the game was a disgrace and more so with the number of other youngsters who had also
made the away trip. They neither have any respect for themselves or for other people around them. For me it spoilt what was an excellent away day and especially when a little boy of 6 asks you "What are those men singing Grandad" If that is the norm for away games it will be a long time before we ever go again.

i went to the game too.deepdale is a nice stadium and it was nice to see a big crowd even though it was reduces prices.

tranmere played very well its just a pity they carnt finish their chances.

i dont goto to many away matches with the cost and that.there does seem to be more younger fans going which is good to know that they are supporting their local team.

on the other hand a lot of them seem to just want to go and cause trouble.

i know football fans will wind each other sets of supports up its called banter but their is a limit.

the referee did spoil the game referees are making too many mistakes.
i have read posts on here to suggest the referee was from lancashire.he was very inconsitant.
