This is a massive blow and does not bode well for keeing Buchanan..Welsh has been solid any more departures means that we will not have kept a core. It makes it even more unfortunate that Ladabie has been released.

He's the easiest player to replace from those we are trying to keep.

Average L1 midfielder and if this is the standard of player PNE are looking to recruit they won't be in the Championship again for a while.

We'll miss his set pieces like...

We will miss the fact that he can give 40 games a season when in recent years so many of our midfield have been injury prone

Welsh was an ever present in our team who put in performances week after week. I am sure he would have had several offers on the table before picking Preston.

Good luck to him. A player with his drive and commitment won't be that easy to replace- but hoping we bring someone as good in.

I do tend to agree with mickey on this one. He has improved this season but he is replaceable. I understand why he has gone but it will.be interesting to see how well Preston do next season as the fans hate the manager. Good luck to him but I put my faith in Ronnie to find a replacement.

He's nothing special. He works hard, he tackles. But thats it.

He think's he's Paul Scholes with some of the passes he attempts (and inevitably loses the ball from.)

It's easier to find someone who can run, cover ground and tackle, than find someone who can control a game like Andy Robinson, though obviously he has fitness issues (Robbo I mean.)

He was also one of the worst players under our bad run under Les... some captain eh.

I'd like to see Ash given the armband now anyway!

Good luck to John. I think he'll be tough to replace. Reliable, dependable, didn't get many injuries or bookings so played plenty of games and did a lot of good work defensively IMO - perhaps a lot of work that went unnoticed and arguably the sixth man of our defence.

I agree totally Matthew.

I think this could be a blessing in disguise for me. We know how Ronnie likes to play and it would free up a position to bring in a defensive midfield player which would allow robbo to move into the middle.

Preston have obviously offered him more money or a longer contract but I don't see it as a move forward for him. We have got equally as good a chance of being up there as them and the type of football their manager likes, he won't see much of the ball!

No great loss in my opinion, sure we'll come good and find someone better.

It's becoming the norm in football these days. Just shows how loyal Ash and Goody are by signing their new deals.

Why is everyone saying this is a step sideways?

If we lose Sheffield United from League One in the play-offs (which I hope we do) I can see Preston being right up there nest season.

He stuck by his club till his contract enered and showed great support for the rovers at our darkest time ! more than can be said for many experts ! including you Pez ! he stuck by his guns ! you posted !!! ah well roll on 2013

In our worst run of the season (that few months under Les) - Welsh was probably the worst player through it. And he is captain.

I think he is easily replaceable as I've said before, I don't get why everyone is so upset about him leaving.

To sub.. PNE are reportedly in massive financial difficulties and will only be making free transfers this summer. L1 looks as if it could be the weakest it has been in a while, so whilst PNE might be one of the "stronger" teams, if they did go up I'd expect them to come straight back down (unless they find investment.) If all their signings are of a similar standard to Welsh, I don't see why we can't finish above them.

Good player, welsh will be misssed but if an honest thought the same when Antony Kay left and we got by without him.

Remember everyone we are Trfc and NN player is bigger than the club.

He was not in my opinion any better than any other mid fielder in this League, and really didn't show any leadership qualities during the bad run of form, so I stand by my comments that he is easily replaced.

Wasn't one of my favourites. Prefer a midfielder who is able to change games, not just sit there and through the 'bad run' go missing.

Mark Allot was Ronnies choice before he got the push, not Welsh!

What's the chance that Ronnie will have someone or two lined up!

I'd like to pick you up on two points here:

1) So what if he rejected his contract? He needs money. If you were working for Asda on a two-year contract and were then offered a new contract, but Tesco also came in for you on more money, you'd leave.

2) Aren't all players here for the money? Can you name me one of our current squad who would play for free? No. Because there aren't any. They all need a job to support themselves, their livelihood and their families.

I am with Mikey on Welsh's abilities. He is an avergae L1 midfielder. However he may be missed in and around the dressing room, seems as though he was well liked. Does again raise the issue of why Labadie was released, would definitely have offered him a deal.

The key to doing well in this league is having players with that extra quality, creative influences ala Robbo. I think you can find a lot of players who are similar to Welsh, and as others have said, imo Welsh is the easiest to replace.

I don't agree with you regarding Labadie who is a different type of player to Welsh. I also think that we will miss Welsh a lot more than some are saying.

I don't think he's that much of a loss, only time will tell.

Let's just hope we can make some decent signings soon and it will matter even less that he's gone.

If what we offered him was derisory, then we are going to struggle trying to bring in new players if our wage offers are poor.

John Welsh has left for his own reasons. He's either gone for the money, a longer contract, what he sees as better prospects, because he doesn't like the Tranmere set-up etc. It could be all those reasons or maybe none. However, to say that he's gone because he is somehow a bad person is ridiculous. Not only is there no evidence for this but it's not in any way logical.

What would have happened if Ronnie didn't want him? Would there be fans moaning about his lack of loyalty then? Would Ronnie then be showing a lack of loyalty? When Goody is past it, will the club be showing lack of loyalty by not offering him a new deal?

Sorry Pez, but regardless of Welsh going for his own reasons, to suggest his leaving reflects badly on his captaincy, to me is a non starter.

The same could be levelled at Kevin Nolan, the captain of a premier league team Newcastle, but went to a relegated team west Ham, who if they could afford Newcastles wages in the Premier League, (bearing in mind Newcastle were paying 2 Argentinian first team players in the Championship), they certainly couldn't when they went down, so why go there; to play for a club that couldn't afford as much as a Premier League club, he was playing regularly for as captain?

Sure if he was a fringe player but he wasn't. Apart from his old connections to Fat Sam, I couldn't understand his mentality, especially as he's a northern lad and played in the north all his career until then.

However, how many people at Newcastle would have derided him in relation to his captaincy and therefore his attitude to his old team.

Welsh will be missed, but in relation to Labadie, Welsh is not in the same attacking mould as Labadie, he's more of a balanced midfielder I think.

Put it this way, if you'd ever needed a makeshift striker, like Everton have sometimes with Cahill, you'd probably choose Labadie over Welsh every time.

cant say im that assed welsh has gone really. He is a good holding player but hes passing was poor and his shooting was terrible. in all i think he is very replaceable and is no great loss. navarro is a good call or gary jones at rochdale even tho he is getting on and may be happy to stay at dale. i would of thought welsh would of been on a decent wage so hopefully that will be make avalible to bring in a quality replesment.

It's called an example, putting it into terms of a normal, every day company that we come into contact with. Surely that wasn't that difficult to understand...

You know nothing about the contract that was put to him, anyway. I've heard rumours that it was an offer of less money than his current deal. How is that, for the club setting an example to their captain?

Not too bothered he's gone tbh, we'll get someone else in and he'll soon be forgotten.

We're just surviving atm, and will be until someone decides to buy the club, so I guess it's to be expected.

Be interesting to see if Robbo and Buchs sign their new contracts? If they don't, then Ronnie has got his work cut out for sure.

Make Grandad Goodison captain, he's been their a long time and he played 40 something games this season (not bad for 39 year old) so he's still got a bit of stamina left in him + hes a tranmere legend

Bring back Labadie NOW......pleaseeeeeeee.

Ladabie didn't do anything for us last season apart from a couple of good goals coming off the subs bench. Totally ill disciined and you always thought he was going to get himself sent off for something stupid. When he did play he looked off the pace in my opinion, often lost possession and didn't mark the opposition properly when they had the ball.

Ladabie looked a real talent when we first signed him but now I'd say letting him go is no loss. We will miss welsh though, perhaps our most underrated player last season and he will be a big miss.

im not being funny but we (PNE) are a lot bigger club than you, so you all need to wake up and understand why we can look at your club and take the pick off whoever we want?

Fair play to you, your board are showing a bit of ambition and have put money into the club, for you to sign decent players.

Obviously your desperate to get back into the Championship.

Hope for the fans that it works out, because your finances arent great as it is, so if you dont go up, you're knackered...

fair reply is just unusual that some off your fans on here are trying to slate your players for signing for us, the amount off players that we lost to "bigger and better" teams when we was in the championship was ridiculous you just have to acsept it and hope that your club knows who they plan on replacing them both.
