Ronnie Moore's side to travel to Aston Villa in the Capital One Cup

Article Header - Breaking News

Tranmere Rovers have been drawn away to Premier League side Aston Villa in the second round of this season's Capital One Cup.  The game will be played in the week commencing August 27th.

The last meeting between the two sides also came in the League Cup, when Villa controversially knocked John King's Rovers side out at the semi-final stage, winning 5-4 on penalties after the two legged tie had ended 4-4 on aggregate.

Ronnie Moore's Tranmere side progressed to the second round of the Capital One Cup last night thanks to an extra-time win against League Two side Chesterfield at the ProAct Stadium, with Cole Stockton and Abdulai Bell-Baggie scoring their first goals for the club to earn Rovers a 2-1 win, their first victory at Chesterfield's new ground.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, now under the management of former Norwich and Wycombe boss Paul Lambert, weren't involved in the first round of the club as they're a Premier League side.

Unlike the first round draw, Tranmere weren't seeded for the second round because they are a League One club and as such could only be pair with a Premier League or Championship club.

Tranmere last progressed to the third round of the League Cup, a stage they've never reached whilst Ronnie Moore has been in charge of the club, under the management of Ray Mathias during the 2002/03 season, where they lost 6-1 to Southampton.  They did however infamously reach the final under John Aldridge in 2000, losing to Leicester City at Wembley.  In recent years Rovers they have been kncoekd out of the tournament at the second round stage by Swansea City and Bolton Wanderers.

Not good for progression but a decent tie otherwise for sure!

Sadly I don't think that it will be as much of a moneyspinner as you might think. Last season Villa got about 18,000 for the 3rd round FA Cup tie against Sheff U. That will have included a lot of blades fans (maybe half of the attendance) and I doubt that a midweek second round league cup match against Tranmere is going to attract a lot of Villa fans. So maybe 12,000, minus the cost of operating a huge stadium, with Tranmere taking 40% of what's left... not much really.

On the other hand Villa were probably the worst team in the second half of the last Premier League season so we definitely have a chance of causing an upset and from that point of view it's a good draw!

40 percent of 12,000 gate is good compare to a 3000 gate last night

Yes, but it's only like an extra home league game. I'm sure that the additional money will be useful but I was just trying to make the point that we shouldn't go down there with the attitude that we've already got what we need out of the cup. We should be hungry for a pontentialy really big gate somewhere else!

I think we get 45% of the gate after sum deductions.

You're right Bigmart. My maths skills were temporarily knocked by the wave of digust when I read this in the financial rules:

19.1.2 10 per cent to the Cup Competition Pool (hereinafter called 'the Pool Account') the proceeds of which are to be divided at the end of the competition in the ratio 1:1 between
(a) the Clubs the Premier League
(b) the Clubs in the Football League

... so basically the Premier League has been bribed to take part by guaranteeing them a bigger share of the gate receipts.

I would be surprised if we won but shocks do happen.

You havent had a game yet under your new manager so youve no idea yet how you are going to do this season

Actually John, there's only two posts I can see, speculating on the result and one says it would be nice to win and the other says Tranmere have a chance, but there aren't any that say Tranmere can or will win.

Realistically though, any team in any cup competition has a change. Look at Charlton playing Dagenham some years ago in the FA Cup; but for a Shaun Barltett equaliser in the final five minutes, earning Charlton a replay they won, a conferencde team would have dumped a Premier league side.

John Sillett knows that only too well when he lost to then conference side Sutton United with Coventry and they were the previous seasons winners.

Who would have thought Cardiff, last seasons league runners up and Championship playoff team would lose away to Northampton, who were not even a top 10 side.

If we were speculating on whether San Marino could beat Argentina in a friendly, I'd be on the hell freezing over, flying pigs side of the fence, but Villa will have to contend with one of the best defences in the country last season and I think Gibson will deputise admirably for Goodison and Cassidy will be itching to punk one of Wolves's rival teams, so Villa might not get the result they want.

However the odds are still stacked in Villa's favour. If Tranmere were a championship playoff team, that missed out on promotion and Villa just scraped premier league survival, I'd say it was more a nailed on result for Tranmere. All it could take is for Villa to switch off a bit early on, concede a goal, get panicky, then possibly get a man sent off or give away a sloppy free kick or penalty and Tranemre could steal a result.

Whatever happens though, it's going to be an interesting one, none the less.

Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.
