Tranmere Rovers v Doncaster Rovers Match Discussion

By Deadly Submarine
October 23 2012

If you can't make Tranmere's game at home to Doncaster Rovers on Tuesday evening, why not join in the banter right here with other Rovers fans who are unable to attend......

For those fans who can't make some of the Rovers games this season, particularly the more costly and time consuming southern away games, we at Total Tranmere will be providing a Match Discussion Thread on the Site for every Rovers game.

The thread will allow you to discuss everything from the pre-match build up and starting line-up to the game it as it progresses and the post-match analysis.

Where possible, Total Tranmere staff will post up the starting line-up and substitutes on the thread as soon as it is made known at the game as well as a half-time report on how the game is going for the benefit of those who are unable to make it.

Stadium - Tranmere Rovers (Night)

Tranmere of course, host Doncaster Rovers on Tuesday evening in NPower League One so if you're not going to the game why not join in the banter right here while the game is going on?

Maybe if you have a friend or family member texting you from the game you can post their views here for others to see as the game progresses.

You could also use this thread to discuss other interesting scores throughout the league as well as discussing this game afterwards if you have been along to the game.

What you discuss below is up to you but hopefully it can all be focused on one thread to make it easier for everyone to use.

Admin staff will try and add the team and updates on the game on this thread where possible whilst there will also be our usual update service from our Twitter feed @totaltranmere so if you are not already following us it may be worth doing so!

Hoping we are going to win but have a feeling a draw is more likely. Lets hope the bubble has sprung a temporary leak rather than a burst. Injuries are racking up and exposing the thinness of the squad.

Doncaster on the whole were disappointingly poor compared to a lot of other teams we've played so far.

The difference tonight was our poor defending (they only came forward a few times all night and nearly scored each time)as well as us not being clinical enough with our possession.

We were mugged tonight, no doubt about it. We were by far the better team and deserved all 3 points but our atrocious defending let us down again. Everytime the ball fell in the box it either landed at one of their players or was blocked by one of their players. I Totally agree with Deadly Sub, I thought they were average at best, they spent the majority of the game camped in their half and let Wallace absolutely run the game.

Sometimes in football you don't get the rub of the green and tonight was just one of them. Defending apart I couldn't fault our performance, we did everything we could to win the game but just couldn't and that's sometimes how it is. All we can do is regroup and absolutely hammer Preston on Saturday.

Yep I agree we played quite well, had lots of possession, used the wings well, with Bell-Baggie causing lost of problems but we crossed to heads far too much which was easy for them to defend. Played much better 2nd half and were un-lucky. Haven't seen the goals again but seemed Danny Holmes suspect on both again so he really needs to up his game. Can't believe Wallce given MOM! Disappointing to lose when we deserved at least a draw but I think we arer good enough to stay in the top positions. Keep the faith!!!

We've ridden our luck a few times this season and yesterday it ran out big style. Good to see Robbo back but thought McGurk had a poor game. Think we sorely miss JLAA for his pace and goal scoring ability, we've lost that sharpness up front. Fantastic to get such a crowd for a midweek game. Looking forward to getting the wheels firmly back on track for Saturday.

Got to give Donny some credit. It was their defending that meant we didn't really create too many clear cut chances for all the pressure/possesion. Yes they got a bit lucky, but they could have had another goal or two as well. Not sure we did enough to deserve a win, lots of good huffing and puffing, but not really threatening to blow the house down. Thought Bell Baggie was excellent though, particularly second half.

What a terrible way to lose the unbeaten home record. For the last three games we've lapsed back into our old ways - the simplest ball lumped into our area looks like it's going to cause us problems. In fact, the more stretched the back line the better they seem to defend. Maybe it's down to having three relatively young defenders. Maybe it's time to give one of the two centre backs a rest and bring Goodison in for a couple of matches. No way they'd have scored that first one if he'd been on the pitch.
Apart from the defending it's difficult to criticise the the team. Doncaster defended exceptionally well and just to get one was a good effort. We won't come across a team that defends so perfectly for 90 minutes very often. However we could have helped ourselves with better balls in from the left. Bell-Baggie put in some good balls from a number of tight situations when getting any type of cross away was an achievement whereas on the other side it didn't matter how much space we were in, we could barely beat the first man. Definitely something to work on for the next game.
MOTM Bell-Baggie. Not great in the first half when he was trying to cut inside more but the second half showed that he's at his best down the touchline.

A game we should never really have lost but a host of missed chances and poor defending cost us the win. Agree that Holmes was poor last night.

I cant see how Wallace would be mom as too often in the 2nd half he tried to take on the extra man instead of passing to an unmarked player. There no 5 Rob Jones was clearly the best player on the pitch.

We need to win on saturday or the good start will start to become a distant memory.

Partly to blame for the second goal was that Fonner`s did not close in on Hume who beat Fonner by slotting the ball through his legs from a tight angle and the ball just rolled as calm a you like(or in our case did not like)into the net fair play to Hume(who was wearing the wrong shirt)did well,But before that the main fault was our defence were missing just after we got back into the game we should have held out and perhaps Ronnie at some point after our goal could have thrown on Goody even if it was just to hold play up(there seem to no time for us to get a second after what we had been trying to do (Sm124) for most of the second half score)and with Goody on for last two or three minutes may have been that bit of experience in back line for us to have held out for a 1-1 score but it was not to be and just like the Brentford game we blew it.
McGurk just has not got it missed JLAA last night may have won it with him up front in place of McGurk

Danny holmes and Fonners conspired to concede both goals. why fonners let the cross bounce past his goal without catching it i will never know, and then holmes decided to shield a ball out of play for their throw in, madness.

fonners needs to be off his line a lot quicker sweeping up the lose balls in the box rather than standing on his line waiting for a shot. Humey looked embarrassed as he rolled the ball in it was far too easy.

from the first 10minutes of the game it was clear their no.5 was winning everything, we dont seem to be able to change our tactics once we kick off. low driven crosses or playing it through the defense with quick one-twos was what was needed. instead we lumped in high cross that he dealt with all game.

mcgurk looks lively enough but he is a bit of a luxury, i'd stick with him and see how he develops. disappointed with taylor and gibson, 21 corners and they didnt get on the end of a single one, and they showed lapses of concentration - crucial when it was all us in the 2nd half.

we were/are always going to struggle if we concede first as the opposition will time waste and get everyone behind the ball. there were 21 players in their half for all but 30 seconds of the 2nd half....too many bodies in the way for the wing play of Thompson/McGurk/Bell-Baggie. in the end Baggs got space 'cos they all just fell back into the box and waited for the inevitable high cross.

Id like to see Goodie for Gibson on saturday, bring a bit of experience to the back four and take the pressure off Ash.

Cb ash Taylor 6
Cb Gibson 6
Lb Bakayogo 7
Rm Bell Baggie 6
Cm Wallace 6
Cm Palmer 5
LM robbo 7

Hate to say I told you so, but I knew Ronnie didn't have the strength of character of a winner.
There was no reason that we lost the last two games based on our previous form; it has to be down to the fact the manager had doubts which transferred themselves to the team.
As I said Ronnie did his job and should have been replaced two games ago.
Harsh but the right decision.
Replace him with Billy Davis and we'll go up!

Brilliant idea that. Let's pay off Ronnie's contract, offsetting the payout by releasing a couple of medium salary players, lets say by not renewing Gibson and Palmer's loan and (2 * 6 month contracts = one player) and offloading Ash to any club that wants to take him. A footballing genius like Billy Davis (who would definitely be keen to go to the sort of club that gets rid of their manager when the club's top of the league) would have no problem getting our current squad minus Palmer, Gibson and Ash promoted and probably wouldn't even need to do it via the playoffs.

Eric, what are you going to say when we start on our next run of winning/drawing games.Nothing.
Then when we lose you will magically re-appear quoting the same old message.I am sure you must have Paul Jewell up your sleeve as he is out of a job.

what a second runcorn! I made my comment while we were on our run and before we started losing.
don't get me wrong, i hope we start winning again; i hope we go up. I just don't feel we will with this manager.
I can understand peoples discomfort with what i'm saying, seeing as the last few years have been really stressful as we flirted with div 2; it's just all i'm saying is we've been here before with ron and i feel that you can't make an omlette without breaking eggs and i'd upset people replace moore, the jobs hot as managers will now see tranmere as a championship club and we should take advantage of this situation.
if pj didn't want to be here, he would have left ages ago, he has loads of money and now is the time to take advantage and move forward.

Give it a rest Eric you're talking nonsense. Get behind the team. We're top of the league. Can you actually remember how bad it was under Les? Does everybody not agree that at least we are trying to play good, attacking football? We can't win every game but, do you know what, despite being gutted to lose on tuesday, it was still an enjoyable game to watch and not a million miles away from our glory days when at least we tried to use 2 wingers who tried to beat their man and put crosses in to the box. Problem is we don't have a Jim Steel. I still think we have enought to stay in the top 6 providing we stay injury free.

Billy Davies, a man used to championship football and bigger salaries, a man who was binned for no good reason, at a club that then struggled under a new and failed international manager.

Did Billy Davies get canned for trashing Notts Forests form? No; he got canned for making the playoffs twice and being beaten both times by the eventual winners.

He is not in my eyes a failed manager who punched above his weight and Tranmere would be an attractive proposition, until such managers realised the money wasn't there. You can get the form Tranmere are on with shrewd market acquisitions, but Tranmere are not flush enough to afford people like Billy Davies, unless he was willing to take a sizeable pay cut and considering the level he played at and has managed at, he could probably afford not to work for some consdierable time, so why would he want a job with a club, that couldn't probably pay him what he wanted, then might get promoted only to drop straight down again, causing him to lose his job and some credibility too.

I don't think Tranmere would drop if promoted however, but Billy Davies might.

Tranmere were always going to lose games, even Charlton did it, but the reality is, Ronnie right now is irreplaceable and no he is not transferring doubts onto the pitch right now I don't think.

Why would Ronie doubt his own teams potential after this length of time? Sure if they were hovering near the drop, when he'd thought they could be a top 6 side, then he'd doubt his team potentially, however, the team simply didn't nail enough of the plethera of chances they created against Doncaster, simple as and Doncaster stole a win from under Ronnies nose.

I don't think this conversation would even be happening if Tranmere had lost one game and frankly Ronnie is manager of the month 2 months running, so to consider even replacing him, would be the actions of a chairman incredibly unwise and short-sighted.

Tranmere can and I think will bounce back from this.

Oh and I heard something a while back that implies Ronnie was not treated like dirt, morso that Ronnnie was told his budget would be cut and expressed an inability to work with it and was then told if you can't work with it you're gone, more or less.

Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.

I think the majority of fans think it is just great to see TRFC near the top of the league and RM must take a large share of the credit (as he would the flak if we were nearer the bottom).
Discussing changing managers is a pointless exercise at this stage of the season. If it ain't broke you don't mend it.
Here's to a a win against Moneybags North End and getting back on track.

I still believe that if we stay clear of relegation RM has done his job anything else is a bonus. We need luck with injuries to sustain a high position that is not a criticism of RM but the reality of aclub that cannot run a large squad.

To call for RM to go only goes to show that some supporters are deluded. But bless them we need them all and they are really quite harmless
