Tranmere Rovers v Preston North End Match Discussion

By Deadly Submarine
October 26 2012

If you can't make Tranmere's game at home to Preston North End on Saturday afternoon, why not join in the banter right here with other Rovers fans who are unable to attend......

For those fans who can't make some of the Rovers games this season, particularly the more costly and time consuming southern away games, we at Total Tranmere will be providing a Match Discussion Thread on the Site for every Rovers game.

The thread will allow you to discuss everything from the pre-match build up and starting line-up to the game it as it progresses and the post-match analysis.

Where possible, Total Tranmere staff will post up the starting line-up and substitutes on the thread as soon as it is made known at the game as well as a half-time report on how the game is going for the benefit of those who are unable to make it.

Stadium - Tranmere Rovers (Day)

Tranmere of course, host Preston North End on Saturday afternoon in NPower League One so if you're not going to the game why not join in the banter right here while the game is going on?

Maybe if you have a friend or family member texting you from the game you can post their views here for others to see as the game progresses.

You could also use this thread to discuss other interesting scores throughout the league as well as discussing this game afterwards if you have been along to the game.

What you discuss below is up to you but hopefully it can all be focused on one thread to make it easier for everyone to use.

Admin staff will try and add the team and updates on the game on this thread where possible whilst there will also be our usual update service from our Twitter feed @totaltranmere so if you are not already following us it may be worth doing so!

From 15 minutes before half time until near the end we were second best at everything but we escaped with a point.Miracoulosly we are one point further ahead than this morning although Sheffield Utd could be 2nd on goal diff if they win.
Overall will take the draw but they need to sort out the way they want to play.Ecclestone was obviously struggling to fit in to the set up today.
Eric should be posting soon as we didn't win!!

Listen. I'm not here to gloat. I just want people to acknowledge that I clearly had a point. Which ironically is more than we've deserved in the past 3 matches.

Thought we were lucky to get a point. Preston were sharper than us and played some good football. They missed a couple of great chances to put the game to bed. Our passing was woeful but we kept going. It was great to get the goal and shut up their fans. The dream is still alive.

That was easily our worst performance for a long time.Apart from the first quarter of an hour and the last ten minutes we were easily second best. We were outmuscled AND outplayed. They should have had ONE penalty not the three some of their supporters are claiming, but it was a handball on the line and we should have been down to ten men. Other than Palmer and Cassidy,it is hard to say anybody played okay let alone well. The nomination of Bell Baggie as our MOM by the sponsors was truly mindboggling. They should have been out of sight before the equaliser but that's the way it goes especially after the Doncaster game.

Agree with all the commments here, thought we were woeful at times today and it nearly cost us, but luckily we got something.

Our midfield was given a lot of room to play but we didn't use it enough and Wallace and Palmer dissapeared. Overall, despite having the better of the game I didn't rate them at all. When you consider how many players they brought in, all of which must be on a hell of a lot higher wages than us I thought they lacked quality. If we'd have played as good as we have been doing they wouldn't have been able to live with us which is so frustrating. It pleases me that were a far better team but just didn't turn up today.

I don't understand why the linesman gave offside, from what I saw Cassidy ran from behind the defender to head it in so how is that offside. I have to say the linesman on that side was atrocious, never kept up with play and he looked overweight and out of shape which I'm sorry is absolutely disgraceful.

I'm getting a little worried about Ash Taylor. I'm not sure whether being top of the league or his personal start to the season has got to his head a bit, but he has been at fault for most of the goals we conceded recently. They had a chance in the first half which was his mistake and he lost his head for about 10 minutes. I think maybe Ronnie should have a quiet word because when hes at his best, him and Gibson are impossible to play against.

However moans aside, its good to stop the rot even if we didn't actually deserve it.

Sods law. You batter Doncaster and get stung by both of their shots on target, but today, underwhelm to some extent, put pull off a draw.

Banned Eric was wrong and always will be. Ronnie is a great Tranmere manager, managing a team who are great overall, and who are having to cope with one or two high profile injuries.

I would back Ronnie all day long and the team. The quality versus budget is top class and players like Ash, Fon, Bakayogo, Danny H, Wallace, Palmer, Cassidy, Akpa Akpro, Gibson and Robbo, could all potentially play week in week out in the Championship.

Tranmere for me, are the best value for money team in any of the 4 leagues and I mean based on the cost of the teams quality, not gate prices.

Ronnie is kicking it and if the team had gotten the right result they deserved against Doncaster, it wouldn't have mattered if they'd lost today, they'd be 4 points above second.

I'm not concerend about 1 point from 3 games and a match that should have gone Trnmere's way in the mid week, because tehy have the quality and class to just bounce back with 7-9 points from the next 3 games and gap teams again and I am confident they have a good chance of doing this and then people like Banned Eric, will just look like hot air merchants.

Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.

Matt34, I could not agree more.

The one thing we have this year more than any others is quality. Ronnie has produced a minor miracle in getting the players he has got in and on such a small budget and to get them playing the way we have been is just amazing. We are the type of team now that first made me fall in love with Rovers back in 1988 and slowly were getting the crowds back in with the attractive football were playing which can only be a good thing for the club.

Anyone who thinks Moore is not the right man is deluded. The long ball tactics from his last spell are well and truly gone, we have the ball players in the team to run games and create chances and in Cassidy we have someone who knows exactly where the back of the net is. We are also fitter than most of the teams in the league so after about 70 minutes, were punishing teams who are too tired.

The scary thing for me is that I think we can get better over the course of the season as we still have a few faults we need to iron out. One things for sure, our position certainly doesn't flatter us no matter what opposition fans say!!

Matty j, without saying it exactly you have hit the nail squarely on the head. Last time Ronnie got us to within 3 minutes of the playoffs playing long ball with no budget, this time he has got us top of the league playing great attacking football with no budget. That indicates a manager who knows exactly what he is doing and who can adapt his tactics to suit the personnel he has, getting the absolute maximum out of the money he has to spend. Give me that everyday...

Doogie you are my MOTM totally agree with your response to Matty great attacking football on a limited budget all we now have to do is get all those red/blue fans on the Wirral to get behind THEIR local team and stop watching premier diving sh&te!

In fairness though, Ronnie last time got 1 point from 4 away games against all 4 relgated teams, so the playoffs could have been done and dusted by the time the Scunthorpe game arrived.

Had he done it, I think he'd have been kept, because there might have been enough additional money to minimise budget cuts for another season, as apparently Ronnie expressed disallusion, at having to work with the reduced budget Barnes must have gotten and was told work with it or don't.

He said he couldn't and got binned.

This time, the budget must have gone up as Ronnie paid cash for two players and the bidget may have been based on home attendances achieved since his return, as I recently noted on the ESPN site that Tranmere assuming the PNE attendance has been added, is 6,002.

So hopefully the attendnaces might start getting back to what Tranmere had about 8-10 years ago.

Attendances at that time were somewhat artificially boosted by ridculously low junior season ticket prices. We still do good deals now, but half the crowd in that era were paying about £1 a game, every game. The idea was sound - get them hooked young, just not sure it worked long term.

Only one thing boosts crowds at our level - success.

That wasn't my understanding of Ronnie's departure last time at all, Matt - more to do with dwindling attendances caused by lack of quality football, though I have always suspected it was more due to the removal of the really cheap deals. It was certainly why my nephew and his mates all stopped going.

I heard some time back from someone who claims to be in the know, that Johnson cut the budget and Ronnie said I can't work with that, then Johnson said do or leave and Ronnie said he couldn't, so Johnson axed him.

Johnson was always going to need a yes man, whatever the spending allowances were, as unlike Ron Noades at Brentford, Johsnon would never have taken it on himself. Eventually he would have found someone willing to front out the situation, even if it was Garnett, Goodison or a knowledgeable drinker from the Halfway House.

Apparently, Ronnie had to go into the canteen area to think things through.

The dwindling attendances would have been symptomatic of the cuts however, which is on obvious point of note I know.

Thinking of knowledgeable drinkers, I wonder why clubs never take a punt on the average Joe sometimes. Surely some people who talk a good game could actually be managers.

Going back to the subject of the thread,if Preston are wondering why they don't get any penalties, maybe they should take a look at Sheffield United who got yet another one tonight.
