League Cup Draw Provides a Stag Do For Rovers

Rovers are drawn at home to League Two newcomers Mansfield Town in the first round of the Capital One Cup for the 2013/14 season.....
This morning’s first round draw for the Capital One Cup has handed Rovers a home tie against Football League newcomers Mansfield Town following their title winning season in the Blue Square Premier last season.
The Stags were promoted back into the Football League in May along with play-off winners Newport County and will travel to Prenton Park in the opening week of the season to try and knock seeded Tranmere out of the competition at the first round stage.
The last time the two sides met competitively was in the 2002/03 season when the two third tier games between the two sides produced a staggering eleven goals with Mansfield putting six past Rovers at their ground with Alex Hay netting Rovers sole reply.
At Prenton Park at the end of the same season, the teams needed two attempts to complete the game with the first match being abandoned when a man climbed the floodlight pylon and got onto the Cowshed roof. In the replay three days later, Rovers won 3-1 thanks to goals from Gary Jones, Simon Haworth and Jason Price.
The two sides have never met in this competition but did meet in the FA Cup in 1972, the first game ending 2-2 a Mansfield before Rovers triumphed 4-2 in the replay at Prenton Park. The draw also means that left-back Paul Black will make a quick return to Prenton Park having left at the end of last season and subsequently signed for Mansfield Town.
The tie will be played in the week commencing 5th August and ticket details will be revealed in due course.
