Tranmere Rovers v Stoke City Match Discussion Thread

If you can't make Tranmere's home League Cup game against Stoke City on Wednesday evening, why not join in the banter right here with other Rovers fans who are unable to attend...

Following football even at League One level is pretty expensive these days and no matter how much you love the Rovers, it will sometimes be difficult to make the games in person whether it be the lengthy away trips, or for exiles living elsewhere in the UK or abroad, the home games too.

As a result, for those fans who can't make some of the Rovers games this season, we at Total Tranmere will be providing this match discussion thread for you to discuss developments with the game.

Stadium - Tranmere Rovers (Night)

Tranmere of course, host Stoke City in the third round of the Capital One Cup on Wednesday evening so if you're not going to the game why not join in the banter right here while the game is going on?  You could also use this thread to discuss other interesting scores throughout the league as well as discussing this game afterwards if you have been to watch the game live.

What you discuss below is up to you but hopefully it can all be focused on one thread to make it easier for everyone to use.

I see this game as a very tough one for Rovers. Stoke will be looking to cruise through to the next round and as a result will field a very strong team.Stoke are a much improved side under Mark Hughes and one that likes to pass the ball round , but is currently lacking in fire power up front. As a Stoke fan myself I can only see this going one way however. Hughes is still keen to banish the demons of QPR and has made an excellent start to his career at Stoke.
It's a pity you ever made the mistake of signing Sidibe ffrom us as you've been on a downward spiral ever since. I seem to remember you were 2nd or third when he signed for you.Any way best of luck for tomorrow night , but I'm going with 2-0.

Can't see anything but a Stoke win 0-2.

However, I did say that Bolton would beat us!!

Hope Stoke play their second eleven.

Unlike some premier teams Stoke will see this as one of the few trophies that they can win. In an odd way it is therefore easier to beat apparently stronger prem teams.

In the context of our situation a good performance may be more important than the result. It would be an opportunity to test Mooney,start with Stockton and Lowe, and to assess Hateley.

i see ronnie said he is fielding an unchanged team apart from goodison resting and taylor coming in, I would of started mooney and stockton, i will be paying my £20 tonight sitting in the paddock, still go with a 3-1 win stoke, just cant see were our goals are coming from.

a Cup match is always a blank canvass, clear underdogs, that means we have a chance, most of our lads can up their game, may do it tonight home win 2 - 1

Tranmere are without a win in their last four games and have not won a home game (in normal time) in six attempts.
The League Cup will be a welcome distraction for Rovers - they have taken just 16 points from a possible 75 in the league since the start of February.
Rovers have the joint-worst defensive record in League One - conceding 19 goals in just eight games this season.

Not great stats on bbc website

outfought, stoke were to strong for us in the end, strange decision not even to bring sodje on, who might of gave a bit of muscle up front, poor stockton wasnt in the game, like most of our players, midfield is to weak, really dont know what the answer is ??

well, I quite enjoyed the game, saw an average third div club against a top team. Could on paper have been a mauling, but Tranmere held on for much of the game, and were much improved second half, credit to the manager ? can't single anyone out as not having a go, tho all our lads looked a tad despondant, and at time were too slow to react, but as I said second half were better.
the main arterys of supply never worked, be it Rowe on the right or JLAA on the left (some great tracking back and tackling from JL)
We did stand off them too much first half and allow them time unchallenged on the ball, but in the most kept the door closed.
for me our best player was taken off second half, Lowe impressed, tho the dicision to take him off for Baggie, and slip Lowe in to his slot never worked.
Still good run out for the lads and things to build on

stick to facts, we did have a shot on goal ! on paper we had no hope ! on PP we were in with a shout ! YES I'm happy with that, especially second half. my glass is neither half full nor half empty, ! but could always do with a top up.
Why goosed do you have to be so negative ? do you know anything about the club you claim to 'support' if you want some fame and glory get the **** on the ferry ! if you like me just want to support your local club then first pick up a dictionary and look up 'support' then accept what abnd where your club are and try practice said deffinition from collins !
and stop pulling or trying to pul;l others down to your dark dark place

Think its time we revisited the Rudyard Kipling poem, I particularly like lines 3 & 4 of verse 2, if you can identify with this then you are a real football fan, enjoy:

IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

My favourite poem of all time!

A lot of the lines have great meanings both personally and in general.

Nice post Kiws but to me it's line 1 of the second verse that has the most resonance to Tranmere fans (and all football fans to be fair) - dream of success by all means but don't let it become the be all and end all!

In fact, I think that nearly every line of the first two verses can apply to someone:

IF you can keep your head when all about you - Ronnie
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, - Ronnie
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, - OFW
But make allowance for their doubting too; - OFW
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, - Lowe
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies, - Robbo
Or being hated, don't give way to hating, - Sadly too many of the players
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise: - All the players

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master; - SWA
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster - SWA
And treat those two impostors just the same; - SWA
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken - Ronnie
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, - Ronnie
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,-The Trust
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools: -The Trust
