Tranmere Rovers v Preston North End Match Discusson

February 7 2014

If you can't make Tranmere's game at home to Preston North End on Saturday afternoon, why not join in the banter right here with other Rovers fans who are unable to attend...

Following football even at League One level is pretty expensive these days and no matter how much you love the Rovers, it will sometimes be difficult to make the games in person whether it be the lengthy away trips, or for exiles living elsewhere in the UK or abroad, the home games too.

As a result, for those fans who can't make some of the Rovers games this season, we at Total Tranmere will be providing this match discussion thread for you to discuss developments with the game.

Stadium - Tranmere Rovers (Day)

Tranmere of course, travel host Preston North End on Saturday afternoon in Skybet League One, so if you're not going to the game why not join in the banter right here while the game is going on? You could also use this thread to discuss other interesting scores throughout the league as well as discussing this game afterwards if you have been to watch the game live.

What you discuss below is up to you but hopefully it can all be focused on one thread to make it easier for everyone to use.

I would not change much for tommorows game.
Back four the same
Midfield of Jenno holding, Wallace other CM, Koumas left, but allowed to come inside in a free role.
Lowe and Jake up front in a 4-4-2.

We can't sit back against Preston. We have to have a go at them. They are in reasonable form. We have to take the momentum and confidence from last saturdays win to play to our strengths, which is to try and play high defensive line and get the ball to feet in their half.

If we are positive, I believe that we could get a result.

Agree, we must go at them from the off...hopefully they,ll have tired legs after a tough FA cup game on Wed. night and won,t be relishing playing on a heavy Prenton Park pitch 3 days later.

Question is will they be playing on a heavy Prenton pitch tomorrow the way the weather seems to be heading with a supposed storm heading this way over night, high winds rain hail and thunder god it`s not cricket weather is it (Sm157)

We really needed at least a point today. It was pretty even sided, but i think they edged it looking more dangerous going fowards than us. Koumas had a good game, should of started and things may of been different. Relegation is looking ever more a concern... i dont remember a season were we have lost so many at home?

how wrong could i have been saying 2-1 to us, were do i start, Ronnie changes a winning team again, Preston nearly have more fans than us, no atmosphere whatsoever for our team, Cassidy has an awful game but Ronnie leaves him on, instead of trying Stockton, 5 mins into the first half we played well, then gave up, its like Ronnie wants us to go down, or dosnt care, £21.50 to watch that, freezin ur nuts off 3wins all season at home. How we could do with Ian hume and Welsh back in our team.

Ronnie got it wrong by yet again dropping Koumas AND changing a winning team.

Credit for not being stubborn and for changing it so early though as Koumas turned our performance round completely.

Cassidy for the second game in a row proved very little and Wallace who was lucky to stay on for yet another stupid tackle was the weakest of the three in midfield.

All that said I felt there were a lot of positives in the game including being a little (maybe only a little) unlucky to not get a draw against a side that somehow look set to be up there at the end of the season.

We looked a lot better going forward as we did second half last week too and had Lowe finished that 1 on 1 we'd be looking at a well earned point at least!

Our home support summed themselves up by booing us off at the end. Massive game away next week where we should be a lot more confident on recent form.

Arthurworry slipped up twice, one cost a goal and the other nearly cost a goal. He has a history of making silly errors from which he has recovered in the past. Not this time though. Thought the team showed more fight than they have in a long while. Koumas shone out in the middle and defo should have started, unlucky with the free kick that hit the bar. Surprised Lowe missed the one on one.Poor atmosphere on our part, getting worse by the game.

I have to say that although we still had to defend the break from Preston that resulted from it (which we didn't), Cassidy's decision not to play in either Lowe or whoever else was up there with him, cost us that second goal really.

One pass through to either of them instead of trying to do too much and their goal doesn't happen for me!

Ronnies thoughts on friday evening , i know what will suprise preston, i will change winning team, and if i play joint top goal scorer on the wing and play striker who hasnt scored in a year up on his own, yes that is a great idea.

He only played Lowe on wing when Koumas came on at which point we played much better so don't see the problem?

I agree with the general consensus that Koumas should have started but he changed it early and changed for the better.

The problem with that is lowe is a goal scorer and should not be on the wing.
If he is going to play one up.front it should be a player who can and has scored goals this season.

Yeah I guess so and for what it's worth Cassidy on the whole hasn't looked up to it.

I just think the formation he had against MK and most of today after Koumas came on is right for us at the moment.

Maybe that should be with Lowe up top though

I find it strange that our 35yr old leading goal scorer ( by far ) stands at the post for opposition corners.

so looking forward to watching Cole on Wednesday. I too was pleasantly surprised, may b even shocked RM brought Koumas on so soon, watched Jake come thru the Ranks, never saw any great potential nor spark, he worked well last ressies game, and that may be his level, but at the satart you look at him on the team sheet, and look at the bench :-(

Lowe "on the wing" works though. I'm far from Ronnie's biggest fan but look at it this way. In 160 minutes "on the wing" he's scored, got an assist and should have scored today when he was through 1 on 1.

If you actually look at his positioning its not like he's actually hogging the touchline and playing as an out and out winger, a la Chris Shuker etc. He more often than not is just behind and slightly to the right of Cassidy rather than on the wing.

Yes he'd probably prefer to play upfront, and yes we'd probably prefer to see him there. However the best option for the team right now is probably for him to play there.

If we drop Cassidy and play Lowe up top then the person we play in the role Lowe currently occupies is probably going to be Robbo, Kirby or Baggie. Robbo can't run. Jake, despite his effort and generally good ball retention, is more of a squad player than a starter. And as for Baggie... an impact sub at best.

I'd rather see Lowe play "on the wing" and one of Stockton/Cassidy up front than the alternatives to Lowe!

Back to the game today, RM f***ed it up completely. Though considering how stubborn he is it was good to see he made the change early. Aside from the 10 minutes either side of half-time though we were poor. A little more organised than in previous weeks perhaps but very, very sloppy in possession.

Koumas motm by a mile.

Koumas wide right were he came in to score v Everton ! he'll damage and provide
Used to get to me last time he was with us playing on the left ! robbo would over lap, get ignored, an JK would turn infield, and lose the ball or pass it to someone not on his level that would then get tackled ! all a Waste

Lowe was on the wing well before Koumas came on-in fact as soon as Preston scored the first goal. Kirby was amazingly playing central midfield for the last ten minutes before he was subbed.
We deserved nothing because they were much the better team for all bar about ten minutes[the last five of the first half and the first five of the second half].OFW kept us in it with some good saves.

Koumas Wallace Jennings have the leg work to cover wide men playing 433

Them with Robbo Lowe and Kennedy would do damage if played the right way.

There is no way you can justify playing our best striker by a mile on the wing, to accommodate Cassidy. If anything, reverse the roles. And why we didn't make the 3rd sub is anyone's guess

Re: Tranmere Rovers v Preston North End Match Discusson

The only third sub that would have been of any use was Stockton for Cassidy to be honest.

We don't agree on much at the moment Mikey when it comes to Tranmere but apart from the "only 10 mins either side of half time" seeming a little harsh in my opinion I totally agree with everything else you said, including "Ronnie messed it up".

Well at least it would have been a fresh pair of legs and something slightly different. At the end of the day, we were chasing the game, and not exactly knocking on the door as it was.

I have to disagree that Lowe is better in his current position. Play him up top. You could potentially play Horwood out wide

My mate suggested last night (and apologies if you were gonna come on and post it) that 5-3-2 might be the way forward with Ridehalgh CB and Horwood and Pennington as attacking wing backs then Wallace, Koumas, Jennings and Lowe and Cassidy!

When cassidy's return was announced I posted that I could not see the logic of giving precedence to an out of form loanee over giving experience to a young player of potential. I really do believe that Moore is in danger of messing up a critical period in Stockton's development. I would like to see him given a run of starts it is no more risky than giving priority to solving the problems of another clubs players.

A constant refrain is that the club lacks resources yet we seem crass in our management of those resources that we do have

They were the better team especially in the first half and deserved the win. We played better with Koumas on the pitch but too many of our players had off days, Athurworry & Ridehalgh were poor Wallace is still not contributing mutch and Cassidy is really struggling at the moment.

Been to many loanees this season, and some i frel may not have the passion when we lose afterall we're not their team. But im starting to get fed up of football nowadays. Different players every season, and month by month we havent had a settled squad in years.
We are ignoring our own young players and even senior players and playing young loanees who havent been any better than players imo we have.
People will disagree with me but its my opinion and you have yours and i will respect that.

I think you have a fair point Ming, certainly Cassidy isn't better than Stockton currently and should not be in the team ahead of him

The problem is, people will criticise Ronnie for using Cassidy by namedropping Stockton as a potentiallt better proposition, but then if Ronnie sidelined Cassidy, it would attract alternative criticism as to why Ronnie was wasting money on someone that wasn't being used.

The thing is there is often very little conjecture about who a manager could have signed instead, which mostly occured when a Cassidy return was touted, because Cassidy's benefit was called into question, but hardly any alternative names were touted by people, in relation to other players Ronnie was rumoured to have wanted, or players people would have liked to see play instead based on financial constraints.

I still feel Cassidy needs more time and he is one reason why Tranmere are not in the drop zone again, because he assisted against MK. Hopefully in the next 3-4 games he starts to provide a little more output, then perhaps after about 8 games it would be prudent for the manager to say, if Cassidy wasn't providing much, I should now use someone else instead.

I think at the moment, Ronnie was so adamant about getting Cassidy in, he feels he has to justify the loan, by using him a lot, but you would feel if more assists / goals don't occur from Cassidy soon, Ronnie will be forced to change his thinking and use someone else, assuming he's not of the opinion that Cassidy is untouchable which is not smart.

Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.

Sometimes in football, you just have to accept that the opposition did better than you on the day, otherwise football would be boring.
What I can't accept is the constant tinkering of the starting line up, the lack of tactical awareness of your opponents, especially at home.
We were once again thoughout the game sat on our 18 yard line and we allowed them the space in midfield to dominate us. We needed to be in their half pressing their midfield. It was to easy for them to control the game and that was after Koumas came on. He was our best player by far.
Why when losing in the last ten minutes, didn't Ronnie use an attacking option substitute? Why didn't our full backs get forward in the second half?
Mistakes by players cost us the game, but the tactics employed by Ronnie especially when losing didn't help.

Why didn't we go three at the back and bring Cole on?
Where was the momentum to get a draw out of the game?
I would rather lose 3-1, than not have a go in the last ten minutes.

The reason is simple as has been shown at Prenton Park all last year. Ronnie is using a very conservative attitude to tactics. He is scared of getting beat. And ultimately, that is leading to our home form. We will get relegated on our current home form. Only our away form and other results are giving us our position in the table.

My biggest concern is our home support. How poor was it Saturday? The Preston support equaled ours when we are away.
The matchday experience at Prenton Park is dreadful. It was like a morgue on the kop.
The club need to do something about it, even switching the home support back to the Cowsheds, The club need to create an atmosphere inside the ground to help the players. The lack of inspiration given to the team is pathetic at best.

I will get off my soap box now!

Also LO has lost last three games. Potential to 'do a Tranmere'.
