Brentford v Tranmere Rovers Match Discussion

By Deadly Submarine
March 10 2014

If you can't make Tranmere's game away at Brentford on Tuesday evening, why not join in the banter right here with other Rovers fans who are unable to attend...

Following football even at League One level is pretty expensive these days and no matter how much you love the Rovers, it will sometimes be difficult to make the games in person whether it be the lengthy away trips, or for exiles living elsewhere in the UK or abroad, the home games too. As a result, for those fans who can't make some of the Rovers games this season, we at Total Tranmere will be providing this match discussion thread for you to discuss developments with the game.

Stadium - Brentford

Tranmere of course, travel to Brentford on Tuesday evening in Sky Bet League One, so if you're not going to the game why not join in the banter right here while the game is going on? You could also use this thread to discuss other interesting scores throughout the league as well as discussing this game afterwards if you have been to watch the game live. What you discuss below is up to you but hopefully it can all be focused on one thread to make it easier for everyone to use.

As we have a history of doing s*ite against teams at the bottom of the league and usually up our game against the better teams am gona put my neck on the line and go for a repeat of last seasons score and go for 2.1 and hope the team are singing for ever in blue jeans on the coach on the way back. Hope I am wrong but I can only see a 3-1 defeat if we continue with the formation of Lowe on the wing, Jake as a lone striker and an out of form JW in midfield. Maybe JM will park the bus as Ronnie did at Bradford/Rotherham. Think scrapping for 0-0's is going to be the tactic away from here on, shame cos some of our best performances have been away this season.
Three points on Saturday is far more important then anything at Griffin Park, love to see us go for a win but think we will go for 0-0 and end up losing 3-1

I hope we don;t just park the bus but rather take inspiration from how Wigan took on Man city.

If we had pace you could park the bus and counter but we don;t!!!!

Press high, get in their faces, get hold of the ball and try and cause them some problems instead of sitting back waiting for them to score which they almost certainly will.

With our lack of quality out wide surely a diamond formation could be more useful to us at the moment...

Get 2 strikers and a tight middle of the park.

I would be tempted with a 7 2 1 formation to keep score down below 4 0. I suggest that come half time we will have had no shots, either on or off target.

Well, that is if the team pllays like they did at Stevenage....

Are you serious? Did anyone seriously expect us to get a result tonight? The next 6 games are absolutely crucial-they will tell us whether we will be staying up or not.

1st half decent effort, hit the bar twice. Second half Brentford simply changed gear , we couldn't handle it, and the heads dropped too early. We will go down unless we give 100% and we change the formation.

It was not the prospect of getting a result at Brentford that's at fault it what's gone on before thats the problem getting beat at Stevenage, not being able to put back to back wins together a home record that stinks and goes back to January 2013 all this is the problem we are not good enough.

A good marker for us now is Saturday's game against Notts Co if we lose that it could be game over.

Just watched the highlights on the internet and three things are evident:

1) The ball is often not cleared properly. As fast as the ball is being won it is coming back. We need composure on the ball.

2) We make stupid mistakes at the back that gift away possession that should cost at least one goal a game (thanks to Fonners in this particular game).

3) We cannot defend aerial balls into the box. Both of the Brentford goals were uncontested headers at the back post.

It is clear that any rebuilding must start from the back. There is just no solidity there at the moment. The guys look very nervous and unsure as to their roles.

Saturday is going to make or break our season (in my opinion). A good home win is essential. A loss to Notts County will drop heads even more and I cannot see us raising our game to recover. Lets just hope that we do not concede stupid goals or have someone sent off. I am going to start praying now. SWA forever.

Controversial, but if we are to build from the back, let's give Mooney a start - correct me if I am wrong, but he does command his box, claim crosses, and marshall his defence.
I know fonners was man of the match, but as noted he is a shot stopper, as a result of which, and his other failings, he actually brings more pressure on to the defence.
Watch the first team, and reserves, and actually, Mooney is one of the best passers in the squad, his distribution is phenomenal, unlike the present incumbent, so we don't merely hand back possession, and his defence always knows where he is, giving them added confidence.
Finally, I note that the first goal last night was another of those crosses in the six yard box, which fonners didn't seek to attack.
Let's not forget the first goal versus Oldham!
A suggestion, but unlikely to happen, as whatever the result, the side remains unchanged.
Relegation beckons, and a clear out, and then the youth teamers in the main stand, who take the mickey out of the supporters, with their mock chanting, might not be laughing, as that is bound to be the area for major savings.

Fonners was our best player last night and kept the score respectable, so can't see an reason to bring Mooney in at the moment.

As for the game - sometimes you just have to accept that you've been beaten by the better team.

Re: Brentford v Tranmere Rovers Match Discussion

re fonners - just a suggestion.
But whilst I am happy to note, and see the saves he made, would welcome comments as to whether:
He was vocal, talked to the back four.
Kicked accurately - and didn't slice into touch, thereby handing the ball back, inviting pressure, and creatring the need to make saves.
Commanded the six yard box, came for crosses, and was quick off his line.
I acknowledge he is a good shot stopper, but unfortunately he doesn't give confidence to the back four, as regards balls played behind them, or in respect of crosses from the dead ball line or set pieces.
He does make great saves, but there are lots of other aspects to his game which fall well short of what is required to provide us with a strong defensive platform.
I think it is safe to say that there will be no changes on saturday even if the reserves were to run riot tonight. conversely, it must be difficult to motivate a team knowing that regardless of what you do, you won't be promoted unless there are injuries.

If fonners didnt play, we would have been better 7-0.

The problem for me is the ease that they ran through our midfield. We put Cassidy on the right way so that we can have 3 player in there to sturdy it up. Okay to give them the outrageous switches which they did for fun all night, as long as we are sturdy. Or defend the flanks better.

Right now, we are in between, which for me isn't good enough, and I am a fairly pro management person, but hearing Johnny Mc say that we did well and got in there faces is totally wrong.

They passed the ball in front of our box too easily and we were poor. I just dont see the put of playing cass on the wing. And after seeing the game yesterday, I have to admit, that Deadly Sub is right and me saying that Wallace is our best player a couple of weeks ago was stupid.

I would love to see a 4-4-2 next game with Jenno and Max in the middle and two wingers. Giving more energy and support to lowe who did well yesterday but played on scraps and needs help.

However if the things people think are wrong with Fon Williams were better, then he would be potentially getting caps for Wales and he would have probably taken one of the offers for him in the summer and be at a better level earning much more and Tranmere might need Mooney every week, because replacing Fon Williams would be very difficult, because you're replacing someone who's worth more money, with someone who at best can be paid what the last guy got, assuming your wage bill had no real means to increase.

Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.

Can't believe people are getting on Fonners back?!. Like its going to make the whole team win if we change the keeper?!!. The problem is management , that's pretty evident now. John Mc is using the same old Ronnie tactics that have been proven not to work all season . We've got to change things at the end of the season wether up or down, cause watching this crsp week in week out is depressing .....

Why not change keeper like its gona make much dofference anyway, mooney must be fed up being on the bench week in week out, just like stockton and rowe who have both scored in the past and soon as they do they get dropped again

Re: Brentford v Tranmere Rovers Match Discussion

Why don't we drop Ryan Lowe because Cole Stockton must be fed up of being the bench? Max Power too must be sick to death of being on the bench so why don't we drop Koumas?

At a time this there are far worse issues than dropping a player who has been Man of the Match in the last two games.

I do however think that Stockton can count himself unlucky to not be getting more gametime considering how much Cassidy is getting

Has it crossed anyones mind that he dont drop certain players becouse maybe the senior players rule the dressing room .or maybe mcmahon is not a manager and cant handle players .or is he just clueless .there could be many reasons .but changes must be made .stockton should be given a chance power should play and 4 4 2 at all the remaining home games .we must go for home wins and pick up the odd away points .but if mcmahon cant see that then it proves he cant do the job .

I think Power and Stockton may get a game once J.M / R.M realise that we've exhausted all other avenues and unless we change things drastically they will both be on the dole come May.

Can't understand why the club continues to go for loanees when there are 2 decent players sat on the bench every game? Why? What have these two guys got to do to get a game?

If I was Stockton or Power I'd be on to my agent by now looking for a new employer.

If we go down the big earners will surely be off like rats deserting a sinking ship, all of a sudden the likes of Stockton and Power will become first teamers due to lack of options.

It's a disgrace that were being told we need to improve by J.M and some of the players, but then in the next game, there is absolutely no improvement whatsoever.

Although Tranmere don't pay the best wages in League One, most of the players must still be earning £40 - £50k a year? And doing a job they love? What is their problem?

I'm also sick of the "they have got better players than us" responses by JM and RM after every defeat, it can hardly instill much confidence in the Tranmere team . More likely to make your head drop if your told your no good by your boss.

Re: Brentford v Tranmere Rovers Match Discussion

Saying the opposition are better than your players, isn't necessarily the same thing as saying your players are substandard.

If Ronnie had said that after the Stoke game, would Lowe feel rubbish being compared unfavourably to Crouch, or would any of the used midfielders feel badly compared to Assaidi?

Sometimes it's true, but however it's probably not a good idea to say it too much and maybe stcking to comments like they've got good players, there's no denying that, because even Tranmere players would say that about most of their opponents.

Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.
