Port Vale v Tranmere Rovers Match Discussion
By Deadly Submarine
March 21 2014
If you can't make Tranmere's game away at Port Vale on Saturday afternoon, why not join in the banter right here with other Rovers fans who are unable to attend...
Following football even at League One level is pretty expensive these days and no matter how much you love the Rovers, it will sometimes be difficult to make the games in person whether it be the lengthy away trips, or for exiles living elsewhere in the UK or abroad, the home games too. As a result, for those fans who can't make some of the Rovers games this season, we at Total Tranmere will be providing this match discussion thread for you to discuss developments with the game.

Tranmere of course, travel to Port Vale on Saturday afternoon in Sky Bet League One, so if you're not going to the game why not join in the banter right here while the game is going on? You could also use this thread to discuss other interesting scores throughout the league as well as discussing this game afterwards if you have been to watch the game live. What you discuss below is up to you but hopefully it can all be focused on one thread to make it easier for everyone to use.

GARNOS BARMY ARMY
Over half the team has been moved on or dropped,. Guess that's the way lower league football is these days, Be different if we are backed by the new owner and who ever is in charge is able to build a team. Sadly that wont appease all our fans.
Hoping for a battling performance.
I was rather hoping that Koumas would repeat his last performance at vale when he ran them ragged
It seems that management consider it acceptable that we have to score three just to get a draw.
Give Mooney a chance - don't wait till it is too late to find out whether the answer to the problem may well be sitting on the bench!
If it isn't then fine bring back fonners - but 12 conceded in 5 games suggests we may strugggle to get 3,000 on Tuesday
suggestion is based on the fact that stats indicate vale scored three goals from the four efforts which they had on target! Hardly confidence inspiring
[2] I don't like criticising refs but today's [particularly in the second half ]was one of the worst I've seen for a long time. Very much a homer, missed what looked like a stonewall penalty near the end and most annoying of all, allowed the worst and most blatant time wasting by Vale to continue [and get worse]unchecked throughout the whole game. Never appeared to even look at let alone speak to the two goalkeepers who both got away with murder[made Fonners look like an amateur at it]and unbelievable delaying of the game and manipulation of the rules. The one who got carried off on a stretcher annoyed me so much that, for the first time I can remember,I refused to applaud a player being carried off-he was that bad.
[3] We should have got something out of the game-had quite a few chances in the second part of the first half but couldn't hit a barn door. Second half, when we threw caution to the wind ,it could have gone either way.Unfortunately it didn't go ours.
Firstly today we were robbed of a point from what was the most blatant penalty ever near the end but more than that I felt we deserved to win the game.
After a shaky start at the back and the early goal we grew into the game, had a goal disallowed and created the most chances.
Then we switched off again at the start of the second half and with only their second real chance, Vale were 2-0 up. Third chance and they were 3-0 up but we had dominated the second half and for the final half hour we battered them like I've not seen us do to any team for a while!
None of the goals were Fonners fault as anyone who was there will know.
Finally a word for the classless Vale fans who mocked our Thompson applause and made obscene gestures to our fans during it before then behaving disgracefully outside the ground as well.
I'm not saying any team deserves Administration but I've heard it's coming their way at the end of the season so other teams that have put up with their fans this season (and I know of others) may not be too sorry to hear it
The attitude of some of the Vale fans I briefly spoke after the match[mainly about the timewasting] also backed your classless description. I would however also describe my lack of applause for their very irritating keeper when he was carried off as possibly being classless
but it was not in the same league as their fans.Quote:thanks Sub so hard to get to grips with how the lads have done, fell there are quite a few of us that take your views and comments as being justDeadly Submarine
Haha and still the Fonners scapegoat routine goes on! I can only assume from your comments that you weren't at the game today?

However another Koumas goal is heartening and if the open play and dead ball scoring of his continues, it will be a key weapon in the fight for survival.
I'm a little perplexed though as to why he has only scored recently, after so many games in the side this season, because he is now joint second scorer with Robbo, but it is a welcome plus point after an uncertain and up and down campaign.
Good that he and Wallace played and hopefully Jennings may return for the next game. The team are still above the drop and I think can still make good their escape.
Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.
Our defending for all three goals was woeful, it could have been more as they hit the bar and fonners made a great save from a 1 on 1. Once we got one back you could see they were beginning to panic and by the time the second went in, they were there for the taking. We had a few chances but just couldn't take them which was disappointing.
I fear that our legacy this season will be our defending, it's cost us far too many games and is the reason why we are where we are. If it costs us our place in the league one then wit will be on our soon to be ex managers head for leaving us short at the back at the start of the season and now we're paying the price.
Saying that though, I think we may have enought to stay up as we have a less difficult run in than some of our rivals and we have to play most of them so it's in our hands.

Tranmere deserved something today, but sometimes it just isn't your day.

Why do you think it wasn't our day?

As far as the game goes, we were comfortable for 60 minutes and your only threat was from set pieces. Which I've got no problem with, play to your strengths and all that, but you were never going to create a great deal with the pace of Lowe up front. You probably should of had a penalty yes but with a defence as poor as that there was only going to be one winner today. I've no doubt that you will stay up, at the end of the day your Tranmere and your about as League 1 as it gets.
Oh, and were not going to go into administration, just to put your mind at ease.

Don't know what your on about regarding our fans, however, then admitting you didn't clap our keeper off after that horrible big lump of yours took him clean out is quite ironic. I presume last week when you were 3-2 up against Notts your lot were rushing to get on with the game?

Fonners routine still goes on
I am afraid there is an obvious difference between us, and whilst I was not there yesterday, It remains the case that I am at least offering a suggestion as to improving the defence, whereas you criticise but accept the status quo, with no apparent alternatives.
To that end, and if you do answer these questions directly, then no futher posts this end:
1- Does Fonners marshall the defence vocally - yes or no
2- Does he command the six yard area - yes or no
3- Is he positive coming off his line, acting as sweeper -yes or no
4 - Is his kicking better than Mooney's - yeas or no
5- What would you do specifically to improve the defence with the players available.
6- Are you happy with the fact that we need to score two goals to get a draw at the moment.
I will still be attending on Tuesday, although I suggest that the gate will again plunge to another low for the season, and have already paid for next year's season ticket. Once again, I will watch the warm up for the keeper, which will again concentrate on shot stopping, but not handling, kicking or coming off the line.
I would suggest that a greater concern for all of us, is why so many can no longer be bothered attending home games, if this is perceived as a waste of money, then it should not surprise you that away games, are not attended.

re. OFW i thought he came off his line to collect balls a lot better yesterday, a superb 1-1 save as well.
Totally agree there. His 1 on 1 save in particular was excellent!

For anyone that hasn't seen it.....

Having seen it again, it looks even worse than I thought at the time. I described it as ''atrocious''before, but it's worse than that.
Two subsequent posts, yet no response to my points (today's post 12.14)
As such I think you have accepted my argument, as you have been unable to post any valid, or logical response, and have consistently failed to address the specific shortcomings which I have raised in Fonners game.
I am sure that if we had a player that scored every penalty, but couldn't head the ball, then such valid overview of his shortcomings would not be ignored.
It is extremely disappointing that you criticise my view, yet are unable to offer a balanced argument to contradict my concerns.
In the absence of such, any right minded supporter must surely agree with my assessment, that the time has come to give Mooney a chance (1 goal conceded in two first team games).
I am pleased to note, nonetheless, that neither have us have questioned the integrity of the other throughout this process.

Yesterday was one of OFW's best games of late I thought.. and I'm one of those who has criticised him a lot lately. An excellent shot stopper but overall he's just a very average L1 'keeper.
I'd say Saturday was probably his 4th or 5th best game of late with Brentford being number 1 and MK Dons a close second! Surely an average L1 keeper is the best we can hope for with being in L1 and all!
As for the penalty Hoots I'm the same as you, furious at the time and even worse after seeing that video!

I don't think that any player should be guaranteed to be in the starting 11. There has to be some competition for places.
Who's competing for Lowe's place right now? At the very least he has to be a nailed on selection every week, because the other strike options right now don't look like 15+ goal a season players.
Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.

But he earns his place. I'm not so sure that others do, its just that they are seen as the first choice LB, or first choice FB etc, regardless of how they are playing. Lowe is justifying his place in the starting 11 given his goals, workrate etc.
