Striker Donnelly Leaves Rovers

Tranmere striker George Donnelly has left Prenton Park today.....

After a few weeks of uncertainty amongst Rovers fans regarding his current status, Tranmere have today confirmed that striker George Donnelly has left the Club after having his contract cancelled by mutual consent.

Donnelly signed for Rovers in September 2014 for an undisclosed fee from Rochdale making five starts and seven substitute appearances for the Club without scoring a goal.

Upon a change of Rovers Manager early in the season when Micky Adams took over from Rob Edwards, players who may not have featured too much so far were told they would have a fresh chance to earn a place but despite goals in the Reserve side, Donnelly was soon sent out on loan to Southport, playing 14 times and scoring once.

Total Tranmere would like to wish George Donnelly all the best for the future.

Good Luck to him!

Another victim of the "everyone will be given a chance" fiasco!

For me the only difference between Donnelly and Odejayi as mentioned on the other thread is that Odejayi got his chance!

He was just another reminder of the whole fiasco that was last season.Everything from top to bottom was a disgrace. He never looked like he had any quality in the limited time he had on the pitch I wouldn't hold him responsible as bad as he was he scored more than hume im just glad another memory of last season has gone

Wouldn't blame the scouting system. I seem to recall Edwards said he'd had his eye on him for some time and was an admirer.

All I can think of is should have gone to Specsavers.....

He got his chance and stupidly got himself sent off,had the ability to run around without ever actually being involved in the game, awful player.

The only thing I remember him doing was coming to the away end at Hartlepool before the game[his debut] and kissing a redhead[presumably his wife/girlfriend]. He then went to sit on the bench, came on for the last fifteen minutes and contributed not a lot.

Pretty poor signing after such a big big build up #wehaveastrikerinthebuilding another Jeremy butler and Edwards idea that never came off like Richards the man to replace Lowe! To be fair he wasn't given a fair crack but did he deserve to? Didn't do much for me not a great loss

Poor player who lets not forget we actually paid a fee for, didn't do anything at southport on loan, wont be missed.

It might happen, bearing in mind they are probably the only club at that level that might be able to offer professional terms, unless Chorley can do it, as they supposedly have a few quid to spend.

As for Donnelly himself, not a great impact made, but then in a faltering team setup and not always used in his best position, whatever that is, it could be said he never quite found his feet, like maybe he could have done had he been part of a team challenging in the top 10 with a good run of starts under his belt.

I hope he gets a chance somewhere else, because he never got talked about as anti-social or having a massive attitude, so that professionalism and his efforts to try and be a good part of the squad, even though it didn't work out like that, should be respected at least.

I will always respect a player that makes little impact at a club, whatever the reason(s), if they don't create an off field reputation that makes that club look bad, because honest decent players at least deserve respect for that, regardless of how huge or limited their impact is.

Good luck to him, but it's money in the bag, so perhaps Brabin could wave another £200 in front of Margetts and tell him he'll now get an improved contract offer.

Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.

Glad he's gone. Just another on a long list of awful footballers we had last season.

I honestly think if it wasn't for Holness's injury he would be gone as well. Can not see him getting ahead of any of the defenders we have now

Unless he shows effort when back from injury in training/reserves. But can see him struggling this season

If it was just a case of Donnelly being a freebie and us just signing a rotten apple you could say fair enough.

But we paid money for him! Even before the transfer went through Rochdale fans where laughing their heads off. Just mad

I can't understand why we signed Donnelly in the first place. Having said that, he never really had a chance as he was never in the side for more than a few matches.

I see the article on the official website is much shorter than for other players who have left, no wishing him well or thanking him for his efforts. Are we to read anything into this about his relationship with the club?

Never really got a chance to see him to make a fair assessment. But i guess those at the club know best.

That's the thing though and I'm not aiming this at you, but some people try to use the unusable logic of using a players less than stellar form for Tranmere, to criticise the managers judgement when signing a player who's below par form had not happened yet.

A judgement on why a Manager signs someone, should be made when the player is signed, or on the evidence at the time, because a manager were a manager to have the foresight to predict that a player, that for arguments sake played up front and scored 2 goals in 15 games, then got dropped and released after 12 months, would be like that, they wouldn't want to sign them.

You could say why sign someone who scored 2 in 15? The answer, because the manager couldn't know that would happen and wouldn't sign a player if they believed that's all they'd get in the way of end product, but Manager's aren't mystic's.

That's why people said why sign Elliot Richards based on what he had actually done, not the reasons for his signing, which were that he'd had 15 matches for the same manager, training him day in day out, where he scored 5 and set up 1 and frankly a goal and assist ratio of 6 in 16, doesn't sound too ropey.

However if Edwards was mystic and could have predicted or foreseen Richard's form for Tranmere, he might not have signed him.

If people want to question Donnelly's signing, it's better to question it from the perspective of the evidence that Tranmere had to hand at the time and not base a judgement of why he signed Donnelly, on what he went on to do after being signed, because that's blaming a Manager for doing something based on what he couldn't know when he did it.

I can see what you mean Matt but paying a fee for Donnelly was a surprising move to say the least. I know that hindsight is a wonderful thing and that players can change when they move to a different club, but there was no real rationale for paying a fee for him given our financial position at the time.
Apparantly this view was also shared by some Rochdale supporters for whom he'd played previously.

his record is poor because hes a poor player simple as that, we paid a fee for him too which says a lot about edwards.
Anyway hes gone now thankfully.

Yes Coltran, Rochdale fans did whoop with joy at the price paid. I had hoped that they would have been made to reconsider their position with time, but I in the end even without a lot of use or potential use in his favoured position(s), he proved he wasn't a strong enough contender for retention.
