Match Discussion: Gateshead (A)

By Deadly Submarine
August 10 2015

A place for fans of both Rovers and Gateshead to discuss Tuesday evening's upcoming away match at Gateshead International Stadium as Rovers make the trip to the North East for their first National League away fixture......

With the 2015/16 National League campaign now underway for Tranmere, our match discussion thread returns as Rovers prepare to make the relatively long midweek journey to the North-East to take on Gateshead at the Gateshead International Stadium.  Tranmere are of course going into the game on the back of an opening day 1-0 home victory against Woking on Saturday and will be looking to build on that win when they visit Tyneside.

Whether you are unable to make the game for any reason, or even if you are attending, this is the place to discuss all the pre-match build up including team line-up and score predictions, events during the match itself and all the post match fall-out and analysis.   The thread is open to fans of both sides to discuss the events surrounding the game so if you haven't got a Message Forum accounts yet then why not sign up now?

Tranmere will hope to gain back-to-back wins under the Gateshead Floodlights

During the game, Total Tranmere will also be providing Live score updates from Home Park via our Facebook and Twitter accounts so if you don't already do so, why not follow us why not do it right now so you don't forget later!  Just click on the two links above to go to our Social Media accounts.

Gateshead are a passing team, so I would expect at least magnam to play upfront but possibly margetts and Mekki. I'm going for either 0-0, 1-0 or 0-1, basically, not a lot in it lol

Well they aren't actually Gateshead's floodlights - truth is that with less media coverage and new grounds I haven't been to to take pictures, we're a bit short on photos for this season at the moment!

Hoping to rectify that soon!

I hope 245 is not the managers tactics, because 5 strikers is a bit much and as for having 2 goalkeepers instead of a defense, he'd never be allowed it (Sm6)

I would personally take a draw. Then win against Boreham Wood and take seven from the first three games.

Great to renew rivalry after 55 years. I’m old enough to have memories of our days in the Third Division North before we were kicked – to make way for Peterborough United..
Since then you’ve had some low days, (administration in 1987 and last season’s relegation), but some unbelievable highs – reaching the play-offs for the Premier League on 3 successive occasions being a feat that is unlikely to ever be repeated. And reaching the FA Cup Final in 2000 was another fantastic achievement. With that sort of history it’s no wonder that you’re the bookies favourites to win this league at the first time of asking. But it’s a very difficult league to win, as I’m sure that you’ll find out. But all the best and I do hope that you come second to Gateshead and get straight back up into the league again.
With home advantage we’re the marginal favourites to win tomorrow night – (17/10 as against 7/4) – and I’m sure that it’ll be a tough game.
Let’s hope that it’s an entertaining game with a fair result.

League cup final it was dickie2 and am sure it will be tough. WHere is the best drinking establishments near the ground for us to have a few before the game

Hi Prentonboy,
Thanks for the correction. I guess that I got carried away but I always remember that, during the period before we got kicked out, our two teams were usually nearer the bottom of the league than the top so I used to admire your vastly improved status whilst we continued to struggle in the wilderness.
There are lots of pubs within a 10 to 15 minute walk from the ground in both Gateshead and Felling.
The closest pub to the stadium is The Schooner, only a 5 minute walk away. It is always a good pre-match watering hole and, like all the local pubs, very away friendly; it is closest to the stadium and offers a big selection of beers and specialist lagers and provides food as well.
The Nags Head on Gateshead High Street is very popular with our fans so you’ll enjoy the friendly banter. (At one time our High Street boasted the most pubs of any town our size and it was reckoned that even the hardest drinker wouldn’t be able to have a pint in each one and remain on their feet!)
The Mallard on Sunderland Road in Felling is close enough too, (only 10 minutes’ walk, depending upon how drunk you are). There's a Café next door and a Fish & Chip Shop nearby – about ¼ mile along the road before turning down to the Stadium. For anyone not wanting to walk, it’s next to the Felling Metro Station (you can catch a train from there to Gateshead Stadium) or the Streetcars Taxi Office opposite.
Social Clubs tend to be a bit further away probably the two nearest are Holly Hill in Felling and the Pelaw Social (close to Heworth Metro Station).
If you fancy a pub run, one of our supporters, Sattsy, recommends that you get the Metro to the Central Station then go:
Victoria Comet
Union Rooms (Wetherspoons)
Bridge Hotel
then walk over the High Level Bridge and finish at:
Central
Nags Head
and finish at The Schooner if you get the chance.
Enjoy your trip and, if you plan to stay overnight, you’ll enjoy your night-out in Newcastle – the reason why it’s 2 Universities are so popular!

Hi dickie
Many thanks for that our train arrives in about 2 so am sure we will try as many as we can looking forward to seeing new grounds and enjoying a pint with visiting supporters many of whom we have never played before in the league. I am sure tonight will be a tough game as you had a good result Saturday and from what I have read Malcolm Crosby has brought some good players in. Looking forward to some good banter and few pints let the best team win and hopefully not the referee to spoil it

If the game's at Gateshead International Stadium, why are we getting score updates from Home Park? That really is a long journey.

Agree with 1-1.

Totally agree with Dickie 2 about how good it is to again play Gateshead. I remember how in the early fifties both teams were very strong for a period. It was also a major shock when Gateshead were not re-elected as teams like Crewe had come up for re-election on many more occasions. Like many of others of my vintage, it left me with a soft spot for Gateshead and it has been good to see their recent progress. I just hope that tonight it has a temporary setback

Fuming over the goal we conceded it was really poor but also saw the goal of the season from Hill. I doubt that will be beaten all season!

Not as comfortable as the score line would suggest but delighted with that!

Thought young Margetts might have gotten 20 minutes seeing as we were comfortably winning the game?

Seems a little bit unlucky for him ATM.

He did bring Holness on upfront instead of him which was bizarre!

It seemed the ideal opportunity to bring Margetts on in the closing stages but no doubt the manager has his reasons.

The team look solid and there was effort throughout the 90 minutes. Jay Harris catches the eye with his control and distribution. Andy Manghan did well but he has an awkward running style that doesn't look right.

The away support was excellent at 450 odd for a Tuesday night with a three and a half hour journey home for most.

Cracking result and it's seems the defenders will be the main source of goals as well as tight defending.

Makes me wonder why Brabin bothered signing strikers at all (Sm6)

Makes me wonder if Brabin brought Holness on as a bit of a laugh for Stockton as all the defenders were scoring?

Listening to the commentary on Wirral FM Steve Vickers gave the impression we were always in control and bossed the midfield.

I thought we played well thought mangan and Stockton linked well and we looked solid at the back apart from the goal which I personally think we switched off for, 3-0 up seconds till half time already having our half time cup of tea.
They weren't bad and if we hadn't been on our game it could of been another story but we looked confident and after the last few years it's actually pleasing to not be going to matches fearing how many we are going to let in GB has us organised and the players he has brought in know what it's all about in this league and look like they have pride in the shirt very early days but very encouraged.
On a negative side kebab houses are closed at 4 in the morning and there's no moodz bar for a late drink in Newcastle lol
