Tranmere confirm that former Crewe and Sheffield United striker Michael Higdon has joined Rovers intil the end of the season.....

Just when Rovers fans may have thought there were to be no further additions to the squad following the close of the transfer window last week, the Club have this afternoon confirmed that striker Michael Higdon has signed for Rovers until the end of this season.

Higdon, who is 32, finds his way to Merseyside having been released by League One side Sheffield United at the end of the January transfer window having played four matches for the Blades earlier in the season.  Following that he went on loan to Sheffield United's fellow League One side Oldham Athletic where he made thirteen appearances and scored five times in the process.

The striker began his career in the Youth system at Crewe Alexandra before going on to score ten times in 39 starts for the Cheshire club.  After leaving Crewe in the summer of 2007, Higdon had a six year spell in Scotland playing for Falkirk, St Mirren and then Motherwell.

It was with the latter of these where his goalscoring record really impresses as he scored 43 goals in 81 starts for the Fir Park side in a two year spell which also won hime the Scottish Premier League Golden Boot in 2012/13 with 26 goals.  That season he was also voted PFA Scotland Players’ Player of the Year.

Speaking of the new addition this afternoon,Rovers Manager Gary Brabin told the media....

“I’m delighted that we are able to bring such an experienced and talented player as Michael into the squad.  He is a local lad who fits the bill of what we’ve been looking for.  He has been playing at League One level this season and will offer us a different dimension to the excellent attacking options we already have at our disposal.”

Total Tranmere would like to welcome Michael to the Club.

Rumour tonight that he is signing for us fits the criteria free agent target man and from Liverpool.

Had a loan spell at Oldham in 2015 and scored 5 in 11, so would be potentially a class signing if he got anywhere near that kind of form, so hopefully this comes good.

Just noticed he played for a Dutch Eredivise side 2 years ago and scored 15 in 34 with 8 assists and missed about 2 games in total.

I really hope this is going to happen now, because I feel positive about this.

Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.

Would seam the perfect signing. A natural finisher.

Although I did laugh when I read this about his release on the forums:

"Struggled to get in the first team, looks overweight and unfit"

Even better!

Does make a change to hear a rumour about a striker and be impressed by his stats as opposed to wondering why they are classed as a striker

Just been reading that Motherwell wanted him back but can't sign him until next season. He has played for 2 English clubs since the season started, so that means no Scotish club can sign him "this season". Could be our gain for once.

Well done Jim Rockford, someone's got a rumour right. Great signing this, proven goal scoring record in better leagues than ours. Well done MP and GB. Don't hear to many GB bashers now!

I think he will be on the bench at Aldershot

I can only think maybe he will replace Maynard in behind the striker or play as striker with Norwood in behind.

I was speaking to a Sheffield United season ticket holder this afternoon who described him as ''horrendous'' and ''truly awful''.But that's in Division One so we will see for ourselves. I don't want him to play instead of Maynard however.

Potentially a brilliant signing. 5 from 9 in league 1 a few months ago

Will we go 4 4 2? If not my preference would be drop Norwood behind him and lose someone from midfield. Norwood in a free role would be good, bench gtf.
We have been crying out for a goalscorer so if he is a genuinely that he should get a hat full

Bet Stockton will get through a few boxes of Kleenex tonight. Poor lad.

Think Stockton had a few year's to make his mark, yes he had time's out with injuries but seemed never to show his early promise. Perhaps at some point playing alongside with Higdon and Norwood in the same side could be good for him.

When you see his stats for Oldham and I bet their followers may be wondering why they didn't try to sign him, especially as they are probably well aware the Palios' are not throwing cash at Tranmere so Oldham should be able to spend a bit more, if only down to the added TV money and minor attendance increases they probably get being up in league 1.

Watching his goals he looks class. He is very strong player and can score with both feet and has a bullet of a header. It's exactly what we needed. Someone who can rough the center backs up. He needs to play along side Norwood or it's a waste. I'm very happy about this signing SWA......

Bit late to the party, I loved him at Falkirk, was hounded tho for lack of pace and not really being good in the air. He is a great hold up player and does score some great goals. He was a steady player for us , also St mirren then Motherwell he raised the bar and got probably a lucrative deal in Holland. I'm not convinced non league pitches will suit him....time will tell

He finally looked alright today I thought in what was an all round excellent team performance.

Thought he did ok today too. We need a striker who can run off him though, team looked disjointed today I thought though which didn't help him bring in players around him

Still didn't like Higdon today, no movement at all. Lazy and slow. Jenno fantastic, and not a bad game from Kirby. Mcgreath looked pretty hungry when he came on too. Mcnulty again brilliant assertiveness.

As with McNulty I'm sure he will just get better as the games go on - I thought in particular today for a striker needing a goal, his chested lay-off in the area for another of our players (can't remember who) was very unselfish of him.

Agreed, we just need someone able to score alongside him, or more descisive runs from midfield
