Great article to start is off with!

I'm going big on this one, winning by 4 goals! I think 1-5

Looking forth to the opener - this sounds like one to build confidence. From a quick glance, Torquay lost seven of the guys that were up against us back in March so they will have a lot of work to do to get a team together that can keep them afloat. A good moment to play against them.

I'm mainly curious on what line-up we will appear in - will Mellon stand by the Fleetwood eleven that did so well?

As a sidenote, I went browsing through some statistics and noticed that this is a jubilee match – it will be the 50th confrontation between the Rovers and the Gulls. As an small add-on, it will be our 25th visit to Plainmoor as well. Some quick facts:
* We’ve got the upper hand with 22 wins over 16 losses so far (11 draws).
* Remarkably, considering half a century in which we were both in the League, we’ve only faced off once for a cup. The 3rd of September 1969 we’ve got our revenge in the League Cup winning 2-1 after getting a 5-1 drubbing on the road for the competition the week before.
* We’re on a seven-game streak without a loss – Torquay’s last victory dates back to October 1988. The record so far is nine games in the middle of the 80s when we were both in the old Division Four. Our worst streak are six losses in a row in the middle of the 60s.
* With 7 victories, 4 draws and 13 losses in Plainmoor our away tally might seem moderate but we’ve won two of our last three games there – last year was a goalless draw as outlined above (great article, by the way).

I have absolutely no real clue what the team will be for the weekend, or what formation they will play. I think it will be a 1-2 win.

He could do that but then he would have to exclude McEveley, who and without revealing his name at the time, he stated he had a gentleman's agreement with to sign when he talked after that match.

So at the very least considering McEveley's background and potential quality, I would think he would be a strong contender to start, especially as he's the new number 6 according to the squad numbers list that was recently published.

Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.

Will miss the first week of the season as we are on our hols but I'm sticking with the 0-4 I posted on the Torquay site at the beginning of the week.

I like that team but feel MM may go with the 5-2-3 / 3-4-3 (when attacking) they deployed against Fleetwood with the same back 4 and middle 2 as in your post but with Nors and Dunn on either side of Alabi and Mitch on the right.
If that doesn't work then you can always go to the 3-5-2 and bring Jennings on to battle in the centre.
All in all, a win but could be a tight early season feeler or a goal glut if they pull Torquay about too much.
It's just good to have the season back again!

Is what I predict I've liked the look of norburn pre season and I feel Harris offers more then Hughes who tailed off towards the end of the season

Sutton 2 up vs leyton orient. don't think much of suttons new scoreboard which was bought with the money they earned from their FA Cup run last season. switching channels between footy n cricket and wirral radio on soon.

suttons home form ,on their plastic pitch, was very good last season. Away from home they were woeful and finished bottom of the away table with southport. No sutton PIEMAN reserve keeper on the bench anymore, lol. might take a bit of time for this orient team to gel. is steve davis the right man to do that?

Quite impressed with Sutton, they worked hard for each other and pressed well. they are at prenton in 7 days time. suttons ground , another one of those poky little grounds where the goalposts are almost as high as the stand behind lol.

Could this sending off be the pattern for the season for other teams, rough us up a bit to try get players sent off or stop us playing football. If it is it's seems to be working so far.

In the circumstances 0-0 seems like a victory.
We must learn from this and move on.

It was tried last season. Chester, Bromley and N. Ferriby spring to mind.

I've just looked at this refs stats. It appears that he refereed no less than FIVE Torquay home games last which I find astounding.

With all the supposed fire power we managed zip! For me, as long as he's fit, Cook should start and I would play with with Alibi, not Norwood. I would leave Hughes on the bench as I dont think he offers much, no creativity. Sounds like the usual NL standard referring but we have to rise above this and make sure they have no bearing on results, the way to do that is to make sure you score!!

I've seen it and it looks a pretty blatant elbow. As much as we'd like to blame the referee utterly pathetic discipline and the selfish braindead actions of two players have probably cost us a win.

What was promising at least is that even with 9 men we sounded like the better team whereas last year we crumbled after every sending off.

Looking on the brightside it rather forces theselection of Cook and we will see hlow the defencecopes without McNulty....

Ref was poor but disappointing lack of discipline from some individuals has cost us. Fortunately we got a point !

Norwood red card could be blessing in disguise. I'm really starting to think he's part of the problem rather than the solution to our present plight.

Misses too many chances and has other flaws in game.

I'd have started Cook and Alabi.

Whatever the issue is between Mellon and Cook it needs to be sorted. Put egos aside and start Cook for the benefit of the club.

I didn't go but I've said it many times, I'd shelve Norwood, and the red reinforces my stand point. McNulty is past it in my opinion too. Lots of games to come up in a short space, points a point.

I think Micky's starting lineup dilemma has been clarified today!

Alabi and Cook all day long, Norwood tries very hard but doesn't deliver that game changing moment whereas the other two do.

Another one on one went begging today and that should have well been addressed in the closed season.

Don't get me wrong, Norwood works his socks off, but unless he addressed his ineptitude in front of goal, he may well find himself sitting it out on the bench!

IT was a strange game.Both sendings off where justified but they were also a consequence of a referee who lost control.Too many decisions were made as a reaction to a player going down rather than because of the tackle itself.It led to poor discipline by both sides. There is no excuse however for a player of McNultys experience getting provoked into silly hand bagging.
The spotlight on the officials however should not be used as an excuse for a very mixed performance by Rovers. One game does not tell all but there was absolutely no evidence to suggest that Alabi will offer more than Cooke.He was poor in the air and looked no more mobile than Cook who when he came on showed a fat better use of movement to create space for others.There seems to be an attitude on the Board that no one should ever criticise Mellon but on the evidence of today he needs to find a way of healing the rift between him and Cook for without him it was not obvious where goals would be provided.
Nor urn looked OK at times but the balance of the team just did not look right. Jennings had a good game getting better as the game went on.The same was true for Buxton.Hughes was disappointing,giving the ball away too often.I fear that his game is in permanent decline.
At the end of the first game last season, I really thought that we could do well and we did but only after some important changes.I left this game feeling that we looked ordinary.Oddly we were at our best after the sending offs.Is it possible that with McNulty in the side we play too deep to accommodate his lack of movement?
All the intention will be on the poor officials but the reality is that we will need to be far better if first place is the aim

I had decided not to post today. ... after all why ruin my evening in Torquay reliving such a horrible 2 hours but before this thread gets too long...
Norwood apoeared to have his elbows up so may well have been genuine sending off.
McNulty having already got booked decided to get into a pushing match on the halfway line in front of the 4th official so a soft sending off but what did he expect??
yes the referee completely lost it with some laughable decisions as did his linesman but we should have risen ahove that.and we did not with our terrible discipline again in full view! Torquay should also have at least one sent off if not 2.
as to our play we were very good for the first 5 minutes and after that average at best.
alabi was not the answer. His first touch was terrible and he showed little. Personally I think MM left him on far too long. Cook offered far more.
McNulty was way off the pace of the game.
Mcelvey looked solid
The saving grace was we looked solid and yes the better side when down to 9 men but we need to wise up quickly as against a very average dirty side we have already dropped 2 points unnecessarily.

One game . cannot judge purely on that.

True one game does not tell you all but those that think Albi with Cook would make a great partnership could not have been drawing the evidence from today's game. Alabi looked very poor albeit that the se vice to him was not great.
I also agree with the posts that question whether McNulty is now part of the problem

Yes. So they obviously know each other well!

Just back after a ice meal on the seafront. Well that was entertaining!

I take back what I said about McEveley when he signed. He's a touch of class. Once he's fully match fit he'll be spot on. Great signing!

We started the game well, Norwood had a great chance after a couple of minutes. I wasn't keen on the formation and it didn't really work. Jennings isn't effective out wide, he needs to be behind the strikers. Alabi was pretty isolated up top. We were trying to play some good stuff, but dare I say it, our match sharpness wasn't there. Norburn is skillfull, but will talk his way into a lot of bookings.

0-0 was a fair reflection at half team. Neither side deserved the lead.

The Buxton tackle happened right in front of me (and the linesman) What a tackle!! Then the player did his fake collapsing so the ref stopped it (no foul given). Then it just got silly. Buxton was booked for the non foul, McNulty decided to push their gobby striker and got a second yellow. Stupid decision from the captain. From that moment the plot was lost, every dubious tackle the players were going down like they'd been shot (including ours). The ref totally lost control.

Norwood was stupid. He went in with his elbow, so fully deserved his red.

Can't really judge the performance after that, we just had to hold on. I thought everyone did well today. Alabi needed players close to him, and the ball to his feet. He won't win many headers.

Motm was Buxton for me. Solid at the back, good going forward, great set pieces, closest to scoring and knocked one of their players into next week.

On to Tuesday.

Wasn't at the game today but a friend who is a Chester fan told me when we signed him that Alabi is poor in the air but unstoppable when running with or onto the ball.

I'm sure he will come on leaps and bounds this season but agree we need to keep a fired up Cookie involved. Hopefully MM will be able to shuffle the deck to keep the opposition guessing and unable to figure out how to stop us.

I will reserve judgement until after a few games.

We won 5 straight last season at the beginning and flattered to deceive at times IMO.

My understanding is that money is still available to add to the squad when necessary.

Having not seen Owusu play would he be worth an initial short term contract once fit?

Hughes was brilliant today, spraying the ball all over the place, getting stuck in, and his corners caused them all sorts of problems. Hughes, Harris and norburn looks like a decent midfield

Torquay looked awful going forwards with only the full backs throw ins and the occasional foray forwards from Jake Gosling causing concern. Their striker Keating was dreadful but managed to wind Steve up sufficiently. The Torquay fans I saw after the game couldn't believe we kept a player like Cook on the bench for 74 minutes. McEvely looked solid as did Sutton when he came on.
On a side note I was chatting to my mate Jake Gosling from Torquay after the game and he also said he was suprised how poor Alabi was.
Had a nice suprise too the entire team and MM came out (bar Steve and Nors who must have already been on the bus) and posed for photos with my lad and took time to talk about the game. My lad was blown away. Mangan even rushed back in to get the lads to all sign a programme for him. Norburn said he was frustrated coming off but understood why and Jack Dunn said the game wasn't set up for him to come on which suggests MM will be using him when he thinks we need to run directly at the opposition. Encouraging to keep it scoreless and even having chances after sending offs
It will take a few games to get going and hopefully should get better once we win to start momentum
If it is a three game suspension for both then it will give us a good chance to see Cookie and Sutton impress

Cook and Mangan for me up top on tuesday, big fan of Norwoods work rate let himself down today though Mangan also a hard worker would like to see him get a run of games and get some match sharpness.

It could have been worse and fair play to the team for hanging on after that sending off, as there was more than enough time for Torquay to get into a winning position.

A point was not the ideal start, but it doesn't have to signal a derailing of the top spot ambition and a couple of wins on the bounce after this could certainly get that ambition back on track.

Hopefully Woking will be willing participants in a Tranmere win.

Totally stupid, although it would be funny if some of them lobbed their train tickets or car keys and had to buy a new train ticket or thumb a lift home off truckers, or ask the AA to give them their car access back, because their keys had been robbed.

Than again someone could get their own back, by filching the discarded keys and nicking the car, or at the very least leaving a dirty protest in it.

Hopefully some of them are on CCTV and get their comeuppance and are banned from all games for life.

Makes you wonder how many other people felt like throwing the d!ckheads onto the pitch.

Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.

Alabi was poor and Cook seemed a revelation when he came on but he did look shattered after the 20 mins he had been on.
Torquay looked awful going forwards with only the full backs throw ins and the occasional foray forwards from Jake Gosling causing concern. Their striker Keating was dreadful but managed to wind Steve up sufficiently. The Torquay fans I saw after the game couldn't believe we kept a player like Cook on the bench for 74 minutes. McEvely looked solid as did Sutton when he came on.
On a side note I was chatting to my mate Jake Gosling from Torquay after the game and he also said he was suprised how poor Alabi was.
Had a nice suprise too the entire team and MM came out (bar Steve and Nors who must have already been on the bus) and posed for photos with my lad and took time to talk about the game. My lad was blown away. Mangan even rushed back in to get the lads to all sign a programme for him. Norburn said he was frustrated coming off but understood why and Jack Dunn said the game wasn't set up for him to come on which suggests MM will be using him when he thinks we need to run directly at the opposition. One poor game doesnt make a player poor. It would be good to have stats (for all the forwards) How many passes did they receive? How many tackles? How many attempts on goal? Etc. Etc. None of the tranmere team scored so can i assume all the attacking players were poor? Or was the team set up to not concede ? Or was it that Norwood and Alabi combination is ineffective? Guess we will see over next three games where norwood isn't available

The general review of the game has to be a postive one, 10 men for half a game, clean sheet.

Alabi should keep his place for Tuesday. Agree with above post that all the attacking players could have been considered "poor" , whatever "poor" actually means. None of the forward players stood out, not even Cook.

Suggestions to press the panic button and start Mangan are unjustified at this early stage.

Alabi and Cook up front together for me. Alabi is fast enough to play off Cook and they can both lay off the headed ball. Cook can also cross a good ball. It will be interesting to see MM,s next team for the Woking game.

I believe Spencer Myers,the player who in my opinion cost us promotion last season by breaking Vaughan's leg and stopping us from playing 3-5-2 at Wembley,was born in Torquay.

He dives in from time to time, but usually times it correctly. (As per Saturday)

Just noticed the referee against Woking is one Karl Evans, the same official who sent Adam Buxton off against Bromley for a similar "meaty tackle"

I think MM needs to remind him of this, as no doubt similar tackling will probably be dealt with in the same way.

In my mind the two points dropped at Torquay last season along with the two points dropped against Bromley, from a comfortable 2.0 lead, were what cost us IMO the Championship.

The Vaughan injury I mentioned above, IMO cost us the play off final not the Championship.

I too had a side on vantage poin of the Buxton challenge. It was class. Chaney threw in the play acting to make it look worse. It was either a straight red or nothing at all so the yellow is a very strange decision. Again from where I was positioned the clown of a ref was going to let play go on but the even bigger clown of a Lino signalled for a foul?

Just returned from my camping expedition in Torquay and have had time to digest and rationalise the events at Plainmoor. The following is therefore presented in a calm and considered tone: "The Deranged Clown From Ghandy's Circus Strikes Again" would be an appropriate title (for those who remember his antics at Prenton Park last season). The clown officially goes by the name of Samuel Allison, although he he has previously used the aliases of Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles and Blind Lemon Jefferson. Mr Allison has clearly been in exile in the English Riviera; obviously couldn't afford the French equivalent on Ghandy's wages or indeed his duplicitous masquerading as a football referee (without doubt the worst I have seen on the evidence of his performances involving TRFC). In my eyes there is only one reason he is still a referee at this level................(the referees association are all clowns so he is one of their own; sweaty palm time there as I could feel the racism card being brandished). Don't get me wrong, he didn't cost us the three points, we were actually better with 10/9 men. However, he did ruin the occasion; an occasion that cost me an arm and a leg. Well at least I still have my eyesight so chew on that Mr Allison. To be fair, he was ably assisted by his assistant who saw all (99% of it being wrong; he did spot Norwood's elbow and the correct decision was made). Mr Allison at least heard the call from his assistant so his ears are in fine working order! Can we just rewind to Buxton's tackle; perfect for those who were there. Mr Allison played on, only to be corrected by the assistant who failed to graduate from clown school so wanted to make a show of his esteemed entertainer friend. Buxton was then wrongly booked and before the free kick had been taken McNulty received a second card for splitting up the handbags. "Roll up, roll up. The circus is in town". I blame the Torquay officials who should have suspected something when the crazy green wig, red nose and size 18 clown shoes were spotted before kick off in the referees changing room. Back to the football; Buxton was excellent for most of the game and unlucky with his free kick that hit the bar. McEveley looked a good solid defender. Norburn looked bright to begin with but then drifted. I thought Harris had a quiet game, but to be expected perhaps. Alabi needs more support around him; his control did let him down. Norwood quiet and the elbow was stupid. I agree about the idiots throwing bottles on the pitch at their goalkeeper Clarke, but Clarke's behaviour after McNulty's sending off was despicable, running virtually the whole length of the pitch celebrating and windmilling his arms to get the Torquay fans going; totally unprofessional and inciteful (I'd be utterly ashamed if any of our players behaved like that; to repeat, bottle throwing was out of order). Mr Mellon, play 8 v Torquay at home and we'll do them!

Sore subject, but no. Only the tops had been delivered, so depending on the temperature at the time, he was either in the pink goalie top, or the burgundy away kit.

Mr Allison seems to like reffing Torquay home games-in fact he did 5 out of the 23 last season ,so they know him well and he knows them well. I find this figure astounding -I can't fathom out how this is allowed . I remember him at PP once-against Braintree[?]- he wasn't very good then

I thought it was a good game for a neutral, as 0-0's go, and a good performance, given the circumstances. If the ref had a grip on the game I don't think it would have boiled over with McNulty, the theatrics a few minutes before with their lad that went down were embarrassing.. Bit mad from Nors though. Think Torquay played for a point from the first minute. Got to take a point with 9 men I guess, but we did have chances to nick it, and the better of the game. Jenno and Buxton were the standouts for me. Cooky to start tonight please.

hi hoots, ive just watched the vanarama national league matchday 5 highlights show on you tube and viewed both sam allisons red cards issued to wrexham. first red card looked harsh to me and it said that wrexham will appeal it, it seemed the second red card was dished out soon after coz of a wrexham player protesting. looks like this Allison bloke likes flashing his red cards. some nice goals from Sutton and Aldershot in the highlights show and not sure what to make of this supporter with his dog-cum-lion at Guiseley, lol. Norwood had a good chance at Eastleigh which just went past the post, but these chances have to go in. some of these stands behind the goals at some of these grounds look more like bicycle sheds than stands, lol.

This may all be true Phil 65 and I agree he was completely useless with his own version of the laws of the game in that he decides to issue a yellow card even tho he hadn't originally even blown for a foul because he decides later it must have been a foul as the Torquay player was still rolling around on the ground

In fact in that game he should have issued probably 2 more red cards - to their defender who was already on a yellow for squaring up to Norwood and as I recall (altho I have tried to forget this game) another of their players made a nasty challenge who had also been already booked...

Their player was rolling around on the floor after trying 'heroically' to get up but found that he was unable to stand and did a crawling dive, that is when the linesman flagged. If I remember correctly we were attacking in their half with Mr Allison running to keep up with play.

I was talking to a guy later in a bar who was watching Spurs v Juventus, turned out he was a Devon FA official and the first thing he asked me on seeing my shirt was 'how was the referee'!! It seems he'd heard loads of comments from Torquay supporters about how useless he was. A torquay player in there had told him that the player who was subbed after being booked, had lost it... I think it was their No. 4...

And Mr Allison sent off two more [including Jack Wilshere and a Man C player] at Arsenal's under 23 league game last night at the Emirates after a brawl-lack of control of the games seems to be a cause again. Apparently the two players will not be suspended from senior games as a result.
