Changing a manager, the big mistake?

There is a consensus that changing a manager is a mistake. That the  change doesn’t make much difference. It seems that many teams are making this mistake.

In the past few weeks Everton, Luton, West Ham, Plymouth, Oxford, Wolves, Northampton, Reading and Millwall. That’s just since the start of December. So many mistakes there. It must be hard for clubs knowing they are doing the wrong things.

Of course, there is never a single reason why a manager departs. Sometimes owners get the idea that results will change with the same ingredients. It is like wanting a soufflé to rise without eggs. The stuff coming out of the oven is not because the ingredients are poor but because the chef is useless. Maybe a good manager knows that you can’t make a soufflé without eggs but you can make many other dishes, and you can always add different herbs and spices.

The other big risk for some clubs is that a manager who has been failing is expected to make big changes in the January transfer window. I am not a fan of the ‘window’. It artificially inflates the value of average players and creates unrealistic choices for players and clubs alike. I would much prefer that the window was dropped because then it would allow less panic and more realistic transfer activity. It might also stop managers being sacked ahead of the window because they will not rush out and splurge all their cash on a dodgy left back. In short the window does not favour clubs like Tranmere Rovers.

A splurge in the January window seems unlikely. The message from the club is that there is no money to spend on players because the squad we carefully crafted in the summer can’t be improved and we’re skint. To be fair they have only hinted at the latter point. The general consensus is that there are aching gaps in the team assembled all of which must be addressed after the proposed takeover. We are on course to escape relegation on goal difference at least, why panic?

It seems increasingly likely we will be Nigel Adkins’ Super White Army until at least the end of April. We will not be making the heinous error of sacking a manager when results have by and large been poor and when the quality of football has been the same. That’s far too simplistic and mirrors the errors all those who have ditched managers since the start of December have made. Instead we will soldier on, encouraged to get behind the team, as we have done all season, because doing so boosts the performance of the athletes in front of us.

It’s football Jim, but not as we know it.

Nigel has lost a lot of the support of the fans which isn’t helped by “putting square pegs in round holes”,by not playing players in their correct positions, persisting with his “favourites” and creating mistrust by isolating some players ,never having a settled side, giving the appearance of not knowing his best side, disastrous recruitment in the summer including not seeing the injury load of the squad, non scoring strikers and for example no replacement at right wing to mitigate the loss of your best player.Nigels communication skills in battering the fan’s intelligence by overpositivity, not answering questions put to him with changing the answers by going off tangent or just plainly repeating a phrase in answer to questions. He is reported as having the worst win rate as a manager for Tranmere, harps back to his experience as a premier league manager from 10 years ago, tries to play the Tranmere supporter card yet hasn’t declared whether he came to support the club while out of management and how many times he saw Tranmere as a fan….
This maybe the tip of the iceberg as we are not privy to the behind the scenes good or bad
Nigel is thought of by some fans as a nice guy and I imagine he is.To his credit he appears to care somewhat and it’s not his fault he was gifted a long contract and doesn’t have to forego that with new owners thought to be taking over soon .He has been enabled to this unsatisfactory point by a Chairman who in hindsight is more than complicit with the current state of affairs
In fairness Injuries and player loss of form have not helped him but he chose the squad
I just want Nigel to actually earn his money and not put us in harm’s way by flirting with the trap door called Vanarama.I feel all he has to do is finish in places 1-22 .This should not be difficult for a PREMIER league manager.Lets hope he can get his act together starting tomorrow at Walsall

I'm confident we won't fall through the trap door , but I doubt it's going to start tomorrow at Walsall .

I am confident we could fall through the trap door and our league position and general form justify that concern.

It is equally difficult to point to anything which constitutes value that has been added in NA period in post. Apter gave us breathing space last year and that seems to have been wasted. However, I recognise that changing a manager comes with no guarantees. Equally, however, there is strong evidence that changing a poor side can make a difference. The signs of significant change on that front does not look promising. In effect, we face a high risk situation with the likelihood that fingers crossed will be our only strategy.
As for the much vaunted take over, there is no sign of when it will happen. It appears to be a consortia struggling to raise the funds to buy, and in any case are they likely to want to complete whilst there is the risk of relegation? I am certainly doubtful that as a group they will have much to invest in the team.
We may escape relegation, but we seem to have no response to the situation, other than hope.
In terms of the managers position the question for me is, if by the end of the season we finish just above relegation, and still without a buyer, is the case for retaining the manager and his coaching team stronger or weaker?

Whilst I agree with the majority of the issues and comments made by others I don't feel that a change of manager with the existing squad would improve matters and in my view the problem lies with those (owners/senior managers) running the club.

This view is based on my dealings with the club in respect of their assurances they could adequately replace the sports facilities we were using at Beechwood before they closed the place.

Their final proposal was the equivalent of providing a football pitch with no markings, no goal posts or nets, which by the way was subject to regular flooding (not their fault obviously) at twice the going rate for fully functional facilities in Wirral (and Cheshire).

I accept that this is nothing to do with the football side of the club but in my view it is a poor way to run any business, shows a total lack of respect to customers and reflects badly on the club .

As a season ticket holder for many years I feel that's how we are being treated - plenty of talk, no substance and they are never wrong. Emperors clothes analogy may also fit.

We may hang on to our efl status and at that point we will be told - I always knew we had a good squad.

Rant over and apologies to all.

Hopefully, we will avoid the dreaded drop but, NA would still have 2 years of his contract left.

So unless he agreed to stand down and return to his original position, he will still be there.

Obviously, should the takeover happen things may change.

If we do go down with Adkins then the biggest mistake we will have made is by not getting rid of him..I don't rate Adkins, and i do believe a new manager can come in and get something out of these players.

Exactly the same comments about use of players were levelled at Mellon. Go figure! The positivity isn’t something he could have been accused of though…

Whatever he has done in the past is irrelevant. He has achieved absolutely nothing here. We look like a pub side

+2 Spot on Devon, he is so wrapped up in his own bubble of positivity he cannot see the reality of the dire situation he has got us into.

In that case then every win this season, must have made opponents look like clumsy footed no-hopers, not fit for a pub league bench.

Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.
