Ryan Taylor today signed for Premiership new boys Wigan Athletic for an initial fee believed to be around £1.25million made up of £750,000 upfront and a further £500,000 based on appearances, therefore ending months of speculation about his future.  Only last week it was reported that the Tranmere Rovers Board had rejected a second bid from Merseyside neighbours Everton for the young right-back.

Taylor was yet another successful outcome for Tranmere’s youth system and burst onto the scene with a goal on his debut from a free-kick away at Hartlepool in a League Cup game in September 2002.  Since then he has established himself as Rovers’ regular (and often only) right-back over the three seasons that followed.  Despite being a defender, his ability from set-pieces saw him end last season as Rovers third top-scorer with ten goals behind Iain Hume and the now departed Paul Hall.

Taylor has for a couple of seasons shown much promise as a Rovers player and his big test now will be making the step up from League One to the best division in England.  Although Rovers’ fans everywhere will be quite rightly disappointed by the news of Taylor’s departure, there will be few fans who can say that other than perhaps Iain Hume, no-one deserves a crack at the big-time more than Ryan.

Manager Brian Little said on the Official Club Website; "we have done a good deal for the club and it gives Ryan a great opportunity to play in the Premiership.  We wish him well for the future."
