Summerbee Buzzes into Prenton Park

Tranmere have today announced the signing of former Manchester City and Bradford City midfielder Nicky Summerbee on a four month contract. The signing of the 34 year-old had been half expected by Rovers fans as Summerbee has spent the past two weeks training with the squad with a view to a deal.

Rovers have moved to strengthen their midfield with injuries having already hit veteran pair Mark Rankine and Jason McAteer earlier this season.  Former Manchester City midfielder Nicky Summerbee has agreed a four month deal at Prenton Park until January 2006 after spending the past two weeks training with the Rovers squad.

 

His signing gives Manager Brian Little extra options on the wing to compliment Sam Aiston and Gareth Roberts who currently acts as Rover’s first choice left winger after Rovers had been left short of wing options following the departures in the summer of both David Beresford and Paul Hall.

 

At the age of 34, Summerbee boasts no fewer than eight former Clubs with his most recent being a spell at Swindon - where he also began his career - at the start of this season on a non-contract basis playing in just one game.

 

Summerbee has also had two spells at Manchester City as well as playing for Bolton, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest and Leicester.  Rovers fans will remember him most recently playing for Bradford City against Tranmere last season on both occasions that the sides met.  He scored a cracker of a thirty-yard free-kick at Prenton Park as Bradford ran out 5-4 winners.

 

Summerbee is eligible to play in tomorrow's game away at Southend and has taken up Iain Hume's former squad number 7.
