For the second season in succession, Tranmere’s long-serving goalkeeper John Achterberg will miss the busy Christmas and New Year period of game after today being ruled out for up to six weeks with a stomach muscle tear.

The Dutchman missed Tuesday night’s 2-1 defeat at Barnsley with the injury which has now been confirmed to be worse than initially thought.  John’s absence allowed Steve Wilson to make his League debut for Rovers at Oakwell.

In addition to the injury to Achterberg, Physio Les Parry is being kept busy with injuries to five other first team players as the selection problems mount for Manager Brian Little…

Defender Mike Jackson, who limped out of the Oakwell defeat just before half-time is rated as 50-50 to face Blackpool on Saturday after aggravating a calf muscle injury that had threatened to keep him out against Barnsley.

Fellow defender Paul Linwood, who has been out for three weeks with a knee injury, is expected to return to training sometime next week and will therefore also miss the trip to Blackpool.

Captain Jason McAteer who has also been missing with a knee injury, had been expected to be back for the trip to Bloomfield Road but he is now thought to be aiming for the home game against Brentford in a weeks time.

Striker Chris Dagnall was taken off with a knock towards the end of last night’s 4-0 reserve team win over Blackpool and although no serious damage has been sustained, he expected to be out for around two weeks.

Youngsters, Paul Martin and Joe Fowler are also on the treatment table at the current time.
