Tranmere Rovers v Barnsley Preview

All the News and Stats ahead of the visit of Barnsley to Prenton Park in Coca-Cola League One on Saturday when Rovers will be looking to dramatically improve their performance following the woeful display in the 0-0 draw against Hartlepool on Tuesday evening in front of a low crowd.

As Tranmere host well-positioned Barnsley in League One on Saturday, they will have to put in a lot of effort to win over their supporters following Tuesday night’s abysmal showing against Hartlepool in a drab 0-0 draw.

 

The Tykes have won three of their last six games at home and away but have only won once in their last six games on their travels.  The last of those away games ended in a 2-0 defeat at neighbouring Doncaster Rovers last Saturday with both of Donny’s goals coming from former Rovers player Jason Price.

 

In midweek, whilst Rovers were boring their fans at Prenton Park, Barnsley were fighting out a 1-1 draw at home to Port Vale that keeps them in the play-off race.

 

Tranmere are now unbeaten in eleven League One matches that stretches back to Boxing Day and had picked up their home form lately after a torrid start to the season.  However, Tuesday nights debacle against Hartlepool will have left Rovers fans wondering whether the recent improvement in form at Prenton Park had just been a temporary measure.

 

Despite this though, Rovers have lost only once at home in their last nine matches (the defeat coming at the hands of away day specialists Brentford) and will be confident of continuing that run.

 

In last season’s encounters between the two sides, both games ended in a draw, the first of which came at Oakwell and was almost as boring as Rovers last game against Hartlepool.  That day, the two sides drew 0-0 and in the return game at Prenton Park on Boxing Day, the two sides again ended up with a point each this time in a 1-1 draw.  Iain Hume had given Rovers a 73^rd minute lead before a last minute equaliser from Kay ruined Rover’s fans Christmas.

 

This season, the game at Oakwell was won by Barnsley but in truth, a draw at least would have been a fair result.  After a goalless first half, Barnsley took a two goal lead in the second half thanks to Devaney and a Marc Richards penalty before Delroy Facey added a consolation for Rovers deep in stoppage time.

 

MATCH PREDICTION:  Tranmere Rovers 2 – 1 Barnsley

 

 

Tranmere Rovers:  Tranmere are again without goalkeeper John Achterberg (groin) and midfielder Jason McAteer (hamstring) for the visit of Barnsley whilst Calvin Zola and Ian Sharps both sit out through suspension. David Raven who is on loan from Liverpool may well be fit enough to feature for Rovers for the first time.

 

Barnsley: The Tykes have a doubt over defender Paul Reid (hamstring) who missed training on Thursday and may not feature in the trip to Prenton Park.
