With Brian Little under pressure from a section of the Rovers faithful despite just one defeat in their last twelve games, Tranmere travel to Oldham in the hope of a much improved performance from the two poor showings in recent home games that saw them take just a point.

 

Oldham will be out for revenge meanwhile after their unbeaten start to the season came crashing to an end at Prenton Park in the third game of the season when Rovers thumped the Latics 4-0 thanks to a brace from Chris Greenacre and goals from Gareth Roberts and Ian Sharps.

 

Whilst some Rovers fans are not confident about Rovers chances of getting a result at Boundary Park, the fact of the matter is that the side have not lost on their travels since the somewhat undeserved defeat at Barnsley on December 6th.  Since then, Tranmere have had five draws and a win on their travels whilst it has been their home form that has suffered.

 

The home defeat to Barnsley on Saturday ended Rovers eleven game unbeaten run in the League with the vocal away support behind them at Oldham, they will hope to extend their unbeaten away run to seven games.

 

Oldham are in decent form and find themselves one place below the play-off zone in seventh – five points adrift of sixth placed Barnsley.  The Latics’ recent home form in particular is excellent with a 1-0 defeat to Port Vale the only recent blip in their results at Boundary Park.

 

In the 4-0 win for Rovers earlier in the season, the game had looked like being goalless at half-time until Chris Greenacre produced a quality overhead finish in injury time to send Rovers in ahead at the break.  Further goals from Ian Sharps and Gareth Roberts made the scoreline comfortable before Greenacre added his second of the night in second half stoppage time.

 

In last seasons encounters between the sides, the game at Prenton Park saw Rovers win 2-0 with two goals in eight second half minutes from Eugene Dadi and Iain Hume.  The return game at Boundary Park fell on New Years Day and despite Rovers going ahead twice through a Ryan Taylor penalty and then Iain Hume, Rovers were twice pegged back by Griffin and Vernon and the game ended 2-2.

 

That was not the last meeting between the two sides last season as they net again in the Northern Area Semi-Final of the LDV Vans Trophy at Boundary Park.  Rovers took an early lead through Paul Hall in the third minute but David Eyres equalised from long range after a mistake from Russell Howarth in the Rovers goal.  Oldham went on to win5-4 on penalties after Ryan Taylor missed his spot-kick.

 

Despite the two recent poor home performances from Rovers the fans need to get behind the team and save any unhelpful booing and chanting until after the game.  The players need the support of the fans more than ever so let’s get behind the lads and hope for a victory.

Oldham Athletic:  The Latics are without top-scorer Andy Liddell (achilles) and Stefan Stam (groin) whilst Chris Porter faces a late fitness test on an ankle injury.

 

Tranmere Rovers: Rovers have defender Mike Jackson suspended but Ian Sharps and Calvin Zola return from their suspensions to be in contention for a place.  Jason McAteer has started training after a recent injury and may feature but goalkeeper John Achterberg is unlikely to be fit after a groin injury despite returning to light training.
