Steven Gerrard thinks Liverpool played well in their 2-0 victory over Newcastle yesterday. He also said that only for Shay Given the Reds would have scored more goals.

The Republic’s stopper denied the Reds more goals and made an astonishing save from a Harry Kewell shot.

Gerrard said:

"We played well," Gerrard admitted. "I think a lot of people expected us to be tired but we did well. It was important that we got the three points and we just want to keep the good run going and keep on improving.

"Shay Given is a world-class goalkeeper and if there can be any criticism of us it was that we did not finish them off."
