Motherwell 3 - 4 Rangers

Motherwell's fine run in this season's Scottish Cup came to an end at Hampden Park, Rangers won the semi final tie 4 - 3 but Terry Butcher was pleased with his team's performance and rightly so.

Motherwell manager Terry Butcher who was impressed with the workrate of his young side told teletext " I'm proud of the way they went about their work. They can walk out of here with their heads held high and chests out because they have had a right go at Rangers and made them work all the way. "





Motherwell fans had barely taken their seat when Bert Konterman fired Rangers into an early lead after only 2 minutes but Motherwell kept their heads up and equalised through Stephen Craig with 15 minutes on the clock. 17 year old David Clarkson who had been getting the better of the Rangers defence crossed the ball into the penalty area for the former Falkirk hitman to pull Motherwell level.




James McFadden sent the well fans into wild celebrations in the 27th minute, the 20 year old latched on to a pass from Stephen Pearson and curled the ball into the top corner giving Klos no chance.

Rangers brought on Steven Thompson for Arveladze at half time and proved to be a good substitution for McCleish when the forward ran across the Motherwell defence unchallenged to set up Michael Mols to draw Rangers level. The Ibrox side then took the lead for the second time 3 minutes later. McCurry strangely awarded Rangers a free kick ( What for ? ) at the edge of the box. McCann crossed and Amorouso headed home to effectively kill the tie.




Rangers's fourth goal came from an own goal, David Partridge got in the way of a Muscat cross and could do nothing as the ball came off him and went into the net.







Motherwell never gave up and were awarded with their third goal of the afternoon but Derek Adams goal was too late.
