Malcolm Christie, now free from his injury nightmare can sympathise with new Middlesbrough team-mate Jonathan Woodgate's battles to regain full fitness.

Woodgate is desperate to revive his career after sealing a season-long loan move to his home-town club, with injuries restricting him to 14 appearances over two years at Real Madrid.

He is determined to use his year on Teesside to persuade Real boss Fabio Capello that he has a future in Spain and force his way back into the international set-up at the same time.

But in the meantime, Christie is confident a fit Woodgate will be a major asset to Boro.

He told the club's official website www.mfc.co.uk: "We have got ourselves a very good defender. He has played at the highest level for Real Madrid, he has played for Newcastle as well.

"I have played against him a couple of times and I know what a very good defender he is. He is going to be fantastic for us.

"He has had a bit of injury trouble himself, like me, and all he wants to do now is get playing football.

"If we can give him the opportunity to do that, I am sure he will do fantastically for us."

Woodgate could make his debut for the club at Arsenal this weekend as Boro look to bounce back from their 4-0 home drubbing by Portsmouth.

He is likely to line up alongside Chris Riggott with fellow newcomer Robert Huth still working his way back from the ankle problem which delayed his move to the Riverside during the summer.
