The 26-year-old has been undergoing treatment for several days, although the club have released few details of the problem or the extent to which it is affecting him.

A statement on Boro's official website said: "Jonathan Woodgate is doubtful for Boro's game against Everton on Saturday after picking up a leg injury in training.

"He is having treatment but is unlikely to be fit in time to face David Moyes' men."

Woodgate has been in superb form since joining his home-town club on a one-year loan from Real Madrid in a bid to prove his fitness.

Manager Gareth Southgate will hope his latest problem is only a minor one after a catalogue of injuries for more than two years.

With £6million signing Robert Huth now ready to make a Premiership debut for the club after recovering from ankle surgery, Boro at least have cover.

But the loss of a man who was handed the captain's armband in George Boateng's absence would come as a huge blow.

Initial reports suggested Woodgate had damaged his groin, although there have also been suggestions the problem is with a thigh muscle.

The England international tore a thigh muscle during his time at Newcastle, and struggled to recover from it after leaving for St James' Park in a £13.4million switch to Real in August 2004.

That and other problems limited him to just 14 appearances for the Spanish side in two seasons.

However, he worked all summer on his fitness and has embarked upon a programme of exercises defined to protect him from similar injuries.

Woodgate arrived on Teesside confident his fitness concerns were behind him and desperate to prove to Real boss Fabio Capello he has a future at the Bernabeu Stadium.

Southgate, on the other hand, is keen to persuade him that Middlesbrough would be a better option.

And after seeing him launch his loan spell with a superb individual display in the 1-1 draw at Arsenal on September 9 he has played in every league game since.

Woodgate was rested for the 1-0 Carling Cup defeat by Notts County and has been in such good form that he just missed out on Steve McClaren's England squad this time around.

If Woodgate does sit out the Everton game, he will hope to be back the following weekend when the Magpies visit the Riverside.

Newcastle continue to claim that they decided not to compete with Boro to land Woodgate on loan during the summer because of concerns over the player's fitness. The truth is actually that Woodgate turned them down in favour of his hometown club.

A GUARANTEED PROFIT ON ASTON VILLA v TOTTENHAM

Paul Robinson will be hoping that there are no divots on the Villa Park pitch but whether there are or not, we can guarantee you a profit on the match, whatever the result.

What we are going to do is back Aston Villa with Betfred in the hope of cashing in the Betfred bonus of your first bet winnings matched, up to £100.

We are also going to back both Tottenham and the draw so that we ensure that we end up in profit on this bet, whatever the result. Read on and you will find out how.

We're going to lay out a total of £162.00 on the match and we will collect £210.80 if Aston Villa win. But if Tottenham win, we will collect £200.00 and if it's a draw, we will get all our money back. Whatever the result, we will also gain £25.00 in free bets.

Here's how it's done. Just follow these simple instructions.

1. Open accounts with Betfred and Totesport and Extrabet. This shouldn't take you any longer than ten minutes.

2. Make the following deposits into your new accounts. Deposit £62.00 into your new Betfred account. Deposit £50 into your new Totesport account. Deposit £50 into your new Extrabet account.

3. Now make the following bets.

Place £62.00 on Aston Villa to win at 6/5 with Betfred.

Place £50 on the draw at 9/4 with Totesport

Place £50 on Tottenham to win at 2/1 with Extrabet

You have temporarily laid out a total of £162.00. I stress, temporarily... Now sit back, crack a beer open and enjoy the match.

4. Here's what happens at the end of the game.

If Aston Villa win, you will collect £210.80 from Betfred, including your stake back and your first win bonus. This money can be withdraw immediately.

We've had a few mails recently saying that our figures are wrong because people are forgetting about the Betfred bonus. When you are checking our figures, don't forget that Betfred double your winnings up to £100 if your first bet is a winner, so with this bet you will collect the following if Villa win.

£74.40 winnings, doubled, plus your £62.00 stake back which equals £210.80

If it's a draw, you will collect £162.50 from Totesport

If Tottenham win, you will collect £200.00 from Extrabet.

As with Betfred, Extrabet also pay a bonus on your first bet. What they do is match your first bet up to £25.00 so if Spurs win, you will collect the following:

£100.00 winnings, plus £50.00 winnings from your free matched bet plus your £50.00 stake back which equals £200.00.

Totesport will also credit your new account with a £25 free bet whatever the result of the match.

5. This means that the worst case scenario on the Aston Villa v Tottenham match is a draw and you make £0.50 and gain a £25.00 free bet. But if Villa win, you make £48.80 clean profit plus a £25.00 free bet and if Spurs win, you make £38.00 clean profit plus a £25.00 free bet.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions at all about this bet and we will come straight back to you.

Please note that the free bets and bonuses are valid for new customers only so if you already have an account with one or more of the bookies we are using, you won't be able to do this. If that is the case, contact us and we'll try and find you an alternative.

This method of betting was used very successfully during the World Cup and you can read all about how it was done right here.

It's understandable that some people will not believe that it is possible to do this. "What's the catch?" I hear you asking. My answer to that question is that we have been publishing arbitrage bets for three seasons now and literally hundreds of people have profited from following the advice on these pages.

Just enjoy the profit and stay posted for many more of these throughout the season.
