Middlesbrough winger James Morrison has backed his team-mate Stewart Downing to bounce back from his England disappointment this week.

The 22-year-old was left out of Steve McClaren's side for last night's 2-0 defeat in Croatia after receiving criticism for his recent performances at senior international level.

However, Morrison, who has watched Downing's development at close hand as he followed him through the academy ranks into the first team at the Riverside Stadium, is confident he will win over his doubters.

He told the club's official website, www.mfc.co.uk: "I have played with him for a long time and seen what he can do, so I have no doubts about Stewey Downing.

"I do not think there is anybody better than him down the left-hand side at the moment - I cannot think of anyone.

"There are a lot bigger names than him in the team who are not doing so well. Stewey is tough enough to block it out of his head.

"Against Greece, he laid on four goals and yet they are saying he does not go past a man. I just do not know where they are coming from."
