Davies: Everton Is Must Win Game

Middlesbrough defender Andrew Davies admits Saturday's Barclays Premiership clash with Everton is a must-win game. The Teessiders are 17th and take on David Moyes' high-flying Everton after winning just once in the league this season - the 2-1 victory over champions Chelsea on August 23.

Defeat by Blackburn in their last game at the Riverside Stadium and by Phil Jagielka's late strike at Sheffield United a fortnight ago have left manager Gareth Southgate desperately trying to turn things around.

However, Davies remains confident Boro have what it takes to start moving back up the league, with derby rivals Newcastle following Everton to Teesside.

Davies, 21, said: "Everton are a really good team. They are like Blackburn because they work very hard and if we do not match their work-rate, then we will find it tough.

"But if we play as well as we can, then we can beat anybody on our day, as we showed against Chelsea.

"In any case, we have to win on Saturday. We have to go out with the right attitude that we have to beat Everton and Newcastle next week.

"It has been frustrating not to be winning, but the lads are still very confident and we could not have prepared any better for these games."

The victory over Chelsea handed Southgate his first competitive win as a manager, a week after his side squandered a 2-0 lead to lose at Reading on the opening day of the campaign.

However, they have drawn two and lost the remaining three of their league games since and have just five points to show.

That has left supporters restless, and Davies has called for a united front this weekend.

He said: "It is a big game, but every game is a big game. You have got to get points on the board.

"But the lads are confident we can go out there and get a result.

"If the team is not doing well, the fans are not going to be happy. But I find when the crowd does get on the players' backs if they are not doing the right thing, it brings the best out of me personally.

"But for others, it might not. The main things is the crowd sticks with us and just keeps believing.

"If we all stick together as a club and as players, we will be fine, I am sure."

England defender Jonathan Woodgate is likely to miss out with a thigh problem, while Chris Riggott, Ugo Ehiogu and Malcolm Christie are still sidelined.

But Robert Huth could be ready to make his Premiership debut for the club after recovering fron ankle surgery, and skipper George Boateng, full-back Julio Arca and midfielder Jason Euell could all return.
