Lamb Gives Backing To Southgate

Middlesbrough chief executive Keith Lamb has insisted Gareth Southgate will remain the club's manager as talks over his appointment continue.

The Teessiders handed the now 36-year-old a five-year contract when they gave him the job during the summer despite his lack of the necessary UEFA Pro-Licence.

Talks to find a solution to the problem - Premier League rules currently allow him to remain in charge for just 12 weeks, a period which expires next month - are ongoing with league and Football Association chiefs.

Reports over the weekend suggested former Charlton boss Alan Curbishley was being lined up as an alternative after a difficult start to the season.

However, in a statement issued through the club's official website, www.mfc.co.uk, Lamb confirmed Southgate remains the man he and chairman Steve Gibson want to take the club forward.

He said: "We are continuing to hold very constructive talks with the Premier League and the rest of the football authorities to find a satisfactory way forward.

"The reports suggesting anything other than our full support for Gareth are mischievous and completely inaccurate.

"We are 100 per cent behind Gareth. He is our manager and he is just a couple of months into a five-year contract.

"As we have always done, we believe he is the right man to take us forward."

Southgate was appointed as Steve McClaren's replacement after Gibson had considered a series of more qualified men, but found none of them as inspiring as his club captain.

He is in the process of gaining his coaching qualifications, but Boro have argued that because he had been a player right up until the day he was appointed and had spent so much of his spare time on England duty, he is due dispensation.

They have also pointed to their willingness to release McClaren from his contract in order to take up the England job as they attempt to persuade the authorities to consider them a special case.

Derby rivals Newcastle managed to win dispensation to appoint Glenn Roeder in May after chairman Freddy Shepherd won the backing of his Premiership counterparts.

However, his circumstances were different in that he was a manager and enrolled on the Pro-Licence course when he was struck down by a brain tumour in 2003.

Southgate has endured a tough start to his reign, but saw his side claim a second league win of the season on Saturday when they defeated previously unbeaten Everton 2-1 at the Riverside Stadium.
